Reza F. Safa was born and raised a devout Muslim in the Middle East. His faith in Islam was unshakable--until he heard the gospel and gave his life to Jesus. An Honest unbias View

First of all, when anyone writes a book about religion being positive or negatives it will stir up some feathers.
This book was written so Christians can have a better understanding of Islam. It was not written for the Muslim reader in my point of view, Many Muslims will not agree or understand where Mr. Safa is coming from unless they understand Christianity.
In parts, he takes us on a journey inside of his head when he was a Shiite Muslim. Many American know very little about Islam or have interactions with people of that faith. There are a lot of misconceptions that Mr. Safa points out.
I have studied some of the Koran. A few of my Muslim friends have told me that it should be read in Arabic to get the true and unchanged meaning. (They don't trust the translations.)Well although I would mind learning Arabic, I can't see myself learning it anytime to be able to fully read the Koran, its meaning etc..., Although this will not be the only book I read on the subject, I found it helful.
On Page 72 he titled one side "Bible" the other side "Koran" He might mention a title like "Noah's Ark" and give the Biblical account and the Koran and compare.
He even stated that Christians should love the Muslim and not fear them. He said we should try to learn more about their culture and Islam ..........
This books talks about Khomeini, what "Allah" means and who "Allah" is to the Muslims. It talks about Islam in America, the history of Islam, The Nation of Islam, Louis Farrakham, what Islam thinks of Christ and gives a personal account of a lady who grew up Baptist, converted to Islam and later converted back to Christian and why.and more.
Inside Islam has a lot of information in such a small reasonably priced book. Again the tone is from a Christian point of view and he doesn't apologize for reaching out to Muslims world wide in his quest to sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ in this world wide ministry. He doesn't try to tone down his message not to step on toes. He is stepping on toes, Keep in mind that although he states some historical facts to back up his thesis, many of the statements are his "thoughts" from his point of view. Which all books are to some degree.

Helpful but Lacking Depth

As a Christian pastor wanting to teach my congregation the doctrines of practices of Islam, I was hoping for more information than I received here. A far better book, in my estimation, is Caner and Caner's *Unveiling Islam: An Insider's Look at Muslim Life and Beliefs*. It is also written by former Moslems and offers a wealth of information.

This autobiography by the author of the long-running strip, Dykes to Watch Out For, deals with her childhood with a closeted gay father, who was an English teacher and proprietor of the local funeral parlor (the former allowed him access to teen boys). Fun Home refers both to the funeral parlor, where he put makeup on the corpses and arranged the flowers, and the family's meticulously restored gothic revival house, filled with gilt and lace, where he liked to imagine himself a 19th-century aristocrat. The art has greater depth and sophistication that Dykes; Bechdel's talent for intimacy and banter gains gravitas when used to describe a family in which a man's secrets make his wife a tired husk and overshadow his daughter's burgeoning womanhood and homosexuality. His court trial over his dealings with a young boy pushes aside the importance of her early teen years. Her coming out is pushed aside by his death, probably a suicide. The recursively told story, which revisits the sites of tragic desperation again and again, hits notes that resemble Jeanette Winterson at her best. Bechdel presents her childhood as a "still life with children" that her father created, and meditates on how prolonged untruth can become its own reality. She's made a story that's quiet, dignified and not easy to put down. (June)

A powerful graphic novel-memoir, Fun Home documents Bechdel's childhood experiences and coming-of-age as a woman and lesbian. At its center lies her heartbreaking relationship with her distant father, which produces emotionally complex and poignant reflections and clean, bitonal images. While detractors cited confusing chronology and repetition of events, literary buffs enjoyed the challenging references to Albert Camus, James Joyce, and classical mythology. In the end, Fun Home "is an engrossing memoir that does the graphic novel format proud" (New York Times).

*Starred Review* This is a father and daughter story. Bechdel's mother and two brothers are in it, of course, but Bruce Bechdel had the biggest impact on his eldest child and so is naturally the other main character in her autobiographical graphic novel. Emotionally and physically reserved, to the point of brusqueness, he busied himself restoring--and then some--the Victorian-era house he bought for the family in the Pennsylvania town in which he was born and lived virtually all his 44 years. He enlisted the kids for never-ending interior and exterior modifications of the place in what obviously was his major creative outlet. For a living, he taught twelfth-grade English and ran the small undertaking business that occupied part of his parents' house and that the kids called the fun home. Bechdel doesn't even hint about how ironic she and her brothers meant to be, because she is a narrative artist, not a moralist or comedian, in this book and because she has a greater, real-life irony to consider. After disclosing her lesbianism in a letter home from college, her mother replied that her father was homosexual, too. Alison suddenly understood his legal trouble over buying a beer for a teenage boy, all the teen male "helpers" he had around the house, and his solo outings during family vacations to New York. Bechdel's long-running Dykes to Watch Out For is arguably the best comic strip going, and Fun Home is one of the very best graphic novels ever. Ray Olson

A Viewing You Won't Want to Miss!

FUN HOME A FAMILY TRAGICOMIC is the latest work from the highly skilled, insightful, neurotic and wry-humored pen of Alison Bechdel, best known for her "Dykes to Watch Out For" comic strip. (One of the longest-running queer comic strips, "Dykes to Watch Out For" is over 20 years old, has been syndicated in hundreds of papers, released in over 10 books, and is available online via the author's website.) FUN HOME is Bechdel's graphically rendered account of growing up in rural Pennsylvania in the 1960s and 70s with a particular focus on influences of her father`s life and death.

Beginning with some of Bechdel's earliest memories of her father, readers meet a man who was an intelligent, emotionally distant yet volatile, narcissistic perfectionist who struggled with secrets. Trapped in the town not only of his youth but that of his ancestors for several generations, Bechdel`s father worked in the family business, a funeral home (known in the family as the "Fun Home") established by her great-grandfather in the 19th century. In addition to his interest in local history and historic preservation, Bechdel's father was a closeted gay (or bisexual) man who had a string of affairs, primarily with younger men, throughout his life.

Divided into seven chapters, each of which deals with particular themes in her childhood, FUN HOME contains a strong emphasis on literary references. Chapters weave back and forth in time, revealing aspects of Bechdel's childhood and details of her father's death. Books and literature were an important influence in Bechdel's life growing up. Her father taught English Literature at the local high school while her mother studied theater and performed in community plays. The gothic revival home the family lived in (and which her father had restored) boasted a library. At one point Bechdel admits, "I employ these [literary] allusions ... not only as descriptive devices, but because my parents are most real to me in fictional terms" (66). It becomes apparent that literary discussion was one of the primary modes of communication between herself and her father.

Bechdel came out to her parents via a letter in the spring of 1980. Her declaration prompted her mother to point out to Bechdel that her father had been having affairs with men for years. Initially, this information appears to have been news to Bechdel, who reflects, "I'd been upstaged, demoted from protagonist in my own drama to comic relief in my parents' tragedy" (58). This "upstaging" is revealed as a theme in Bechdel's life as childhood milestones, such as her menarche, were overshadowed by the family preoccupation with and response to her father facing charges of "contributing to the delinquency of a minor." Apparently, her father's closet was not entirely secret and his extramarital activities added strain to the family. Her coming out was further upstaged when her father died in a questionable "accident" (it may have been suicide) just four months after her letter.

Bechdel spent years feeling shut down yet very guilty regarding her coming out and how it may have influenced her father's death. FUN HOME details the results of Bechdel's intellectual and emotional processing of her father's death, and her relationship with this complex, intelligent, conflicted, and often remote man. A powerful example of her self awareness includes her admission, "[evidence that he was considering suicide months before Bechdel came out] would only confirm that his death was not my fault. That, in fact, it had nothing to do with me at all. And I'm reluctant to let go of that last, tenuous bond" (86).

Book-length graphic stories are not a mainstay of this reviewer's reading. However, Bechdel's clean, distinctive illustration style with its wry observations and amusing details is fun to read and examine, and drew this reader into her story quickly. Indeed, it's regrettable that this review can only include quotations and not excerpts of Bechdel's drawings. Several delightful and revealing images are included, such as her grandmother chasing a "piss-ant," her early identification with Wednesday Addams, the summer of the locusts, her teenaged diary entries, and several aspects of her own adolescent self-discoveries. One cannot help but identify with Bechdel. However, despite the pain and struggle Bechdel has had facing her father's life and death, the book is neither morose nor depressing. The author has found peace with herself in regard to her father, her childhood, and who she is today. As she says in the dedication (to her mother and brothers) " We did have a lot of fun, in spite of everything."

FUN HOME is a wonderful graphic memoir that is engaging, heartrending, funny, and thoughtful. Readers will definitely want to stop by the Fun Home for this viewing.

A book to watch out for

Wow. I've been trying to figure out how to start this review, but every opening sounds like it's belittling: "Proving that she can do more than her comic strip ..." or "Moving beyond her "Dykes"..." does a great disservice to Bechdel and the comic strip world she has been superbly chronicling for the past twenty-odd years. Bechdel isn't moving beyond anything here; she's just done something different.

It shouldn't come as any surprise that Bechdel is capable of producing such a great work -- she has proved time and again in both her comic strip and other media (her hilarious and much missed wall calendars from the 90s) that she can blend words, drama and humor as sharply as any. The surprise to me here is just how deeply Bechdel allows us to glimpse into her life.

"Fun Home" is no easy narrative: the story of Bechdel's family and especially her difficult father bends, buckles and then turns to reveal more truth as each chapter goes by. The art and detail are so well done that I didn't feel as though I was looking at pen and ink drawings but real photos reminiscent of Italian "fumetti" comics. When the book ended, I felt the need to go over it again and put the pieces together like a puzzle.

I first discovered Bechdel when I was a junior in college 15 years ago and I've been following her work ever since. Part of me wants to selfishly keep her as one of my own, somebody that I discovered before the mainstream and after I died, friends and family would find her books among my collection and think, "This is brilliant, if only we'd read her years ago!"

I'll probably spend the next few months saying, "You liked 'Fun Home'? Amateur! *I've* been reading Bechdel since 1991." But this book (and Bechdel's work in general) deserves a wide audience and all the success it gets.

Bravo Alison, bravo.

Deep and thoughtful with great comparisons of her life and father to great authors such as Joyce and Proust demonstrating the impact of books on their life and relationship. Great art as well - definitely a good read!

Hidden knowledge

As you read the wORds, they begin to permeate and you will realise the greatest trick by religion and dogma that has been played on us regarding the hidden truth in the holy scriptures. This book was recommended to myself (and many others) by one Santos Bonacci, astrotheologist, can I just recommend to anyone (who hasn't already done so) to tune into one of his (Bonacci's) many YouTube videos / radio shows.

The truth is out there and very much INSIDE EVERY ONE OF US.

Should be required reading for all.

I also discovered this work through Mr. Astrotheology on Youtube. To be honest, the information in this book makes complete sense and feels right. However, if you consider synchrotism, there might be more to this. What I mean by that is in a fractal conscious universe, these concepts exist on many different levels...one of those levels being physical. "As above, so below". So if our body is a fractal of the universe, how do these concepts work in the bigger picture.

What exactly are we all doing here on Earth? It seems like I've looked at all possibilities. I've gone down the rabbit hole...seen things...experienced things...
I'm pretty confident that the bible is referring mostly to the human body. Is there another level to it? Well I'm definately open to that. Is Christ the oil only?...or is Christ also a spirit?

I tried raising the oil in myself. I went without wasting the oil for well over one month. A whole moon cycle if you will. I experienced excess energy, and I do think I had better cognitive function. HOwever, nothing spectacular. I mean I was clean as a whislte..no nothing..no coffee, no acids, no negative thoughts..(I really tried). I felt good about what I was doing. But it still did not make me feel "complete". Is it even possible to be "complete"? Perhaps not. Anyway, if ask yourself these questions...read this book. It'll put you way ahead of the majority of Earthlings as far as understanding. That includes even the most self proclaimed spiritual people you've ever known.

I'll shut up now, but basically what I am trying to say is that the more I keep searching and discovering, the more questions I seem to have! I still love seeking though and will not stop in this or any future lifetimes....yes I know that there really isn't such a thing as the future or past ok.

I have been studying and reading this book for many years. At first there was so much new information about what was mythical and mystical and historical that I had to re-educate myself. The authors present a view of Jesus Christ and Christianity that was totally new to me. If the Holy Bible is really a Holistic book then "God Man:The Word Made Flesh" explains what the Mystery of Christ truly entails. Astrology, Chemistry, Physiology, Anatomy are the sciences that the ancients were writing of in all the ages that are represented in the biblical stories, allegories and parables. They were ultimately concerned with the human body and how it worked and preserving and passing this knowledge on. Dr. George W.Carey and Inez E.Perry make a connection between perfect health and the Biochemical tissue or cell salts. The Seed is the Word.(See Luke 8:11) There are three other books that should be read along with this one. They are "The Shadow of the Third Century:A Revaluation of Christianity", "Gerald Massey's Lectures",published by A&B Book Publishers and another publication by Inez E. Perry titled "The Zodiac and the Salts of Salvation". From this book I have come to the revelation that the Alchemists were searching mistakenly for a process that changed base metals into gold. They were searching for a precious substance. That substance is explained to be what the Mystery of Christ is all about.

Authoritative and complete - everything you need for qmail

Although sendmail is installed in more Internet mail servers than any other Mail Transfer Agent (MTA) it has come under scrutiny for being a large awkward program by today's standards. More and more new MTA servers are moving to a modular program like qmail that has a multitude of smaller programs for each function instead of one huge program that does everything. This allows for greater speed and flexibility. John R. Levine's new book "qmail: Managing Unix-Based Mail Systems" examines the qmail program in depth from installation to configuration to troubleshooting. While qmail is fairly straightforward and you can achieve great results on both small and very large systems, it is a very different way of thinking if you are moving from sendmail and are already familiar with it. The author recognizes this difficulty of changing the way you think and spends a good portion of the beginning of the book detailing qmail and how it works so you understand the "qmail frame of mind". I've never setup a sendmail server and so I did not have the obstacle to overcome but I have setup and configured the postfix MTA which is also a modular type program. With that background the book was a breeze to follow along and I was even able to download a copy and configure it correctly for my system. The coverage was excellent and the installation and configuration information provided all the information I needed to get it up and running. If you are thinking of building a qmail MTA you will find "qmail: Managing Unix-Based Mail Systems" absolutely indispensable and the only reference you need to get it done right the first time.

The handbook that is long, long overdue...

For years, any system administrator running Linux who was worth his paycheck knew that Qmail was the defacto standard for running a mail server (heck, even Yahoo uses it!). Sendmail has always been ripe with security holes and headaches -- something Qmail has went to great lengths to correct. However, the problem has always been there was no easy reference guide to Qmail. You had to be either a Linux-geek, or know someone who was, to get it installed and working correctly!
Now, thanks to O'Reilly, even us non-geeks can get our Qmail systems up and running in no time. This book covers everything you need to know in an easy-to-follow format. From installation, to making the switch from sendmail, even how to tune and setup third-party components with Qmail to help control spam, scan for viruses and run your own mailing list server.
One of the great things about this book is it, for the most part, is not dependent on any particular flavor of Linux. The author does a good job of making it generic enough that you can follow along no matter what distribution you use.
Granted, you will need to know a bit about Linux to use read and fully understand this book. It is geared towards system admistrators and not the end-user of a Qmail system. However, you don't need to be a Linux Guru to understand it -- it has just enough detail to satisfy without overwhelming.
Overall, this is the handbook for Qmail that has been long overdue -- a one-stop technical manual that puts the final touch on Qmail.

About the Author
E. J. R. David, Ph.D., was born in the Philippines by Kapampangan parents and was raised in Pasay, Las Pinas, Makati, and Barrow, Alaska. He is an Assistant Professor at the University of Alaska Anchorage in the Joint Ph.D. Program in Clinical-Community Psychology that has a Cultural and Indigenous Psychology emphasis. He has published in scientific journals regarding colonial mentality or internalized oppression and other topics related to ethnic minority psychology. He lives in Anchorage, Alaska with his wife, children, mother, brother, and countless relatives and friends.

PERFECT CONDITION!

This book came in perfect condition. This book definitely sheds light on Filipino culture that is so often lacking in the educational institution. I think it's a book that Filipino youth should read. This is one of my fave books this semester! :) LOVE LOVE LOVE

Truly a must read for people of Filipino descent, and those curious about the Filipino struggle.

DR. E.J.R David has written a work that all Filipino -/ Americans should read, or at least know about!

If you are Filipino this work will change your outlook on Filipino culture and what it really means to have cultural pride (which many Filipino -/Americans seem so lacking today). I will go so far as to say that his work has lead me into an understanding in my own roots as Malcolm X Shabazz or Mohandas K. Gandhi have done for their respective people in their day. I hope E.J.R David has plans to publish more of his work in the future.

Filipino -/ American Postcolonial Psychology: Oppression, Colonial Mentality, and Decolonization tells about the the mentality of the modern Filipino -/ American. Although this book does have a few aesthetic flaws, and some concepts are complex enough that only psychology majors will be able to understand them, the vast majority of its material is truly a great reading experience. Many Filipino readers including myself can relate to the experiences, concepts, and interviews given in this book about the Filipino struggle for Cultural Identity. I have questioned so much about myself and my cultural identity in life as have many other Filipino -/Americans, and this book has helped me find the answers and the pride I was looking for in my roots. Too many Filipino -/Americans today are so quick to accept the mindset of Western Superiority that many do not realize that they think this way. This book is incredibly liberating in freeing the Filipino people of this mindset, it will give you inspiration in the struggles of the Filipino people and leave you asking for more.

I'm trying to pass on its concepts to the older generation of Filipinos who are still so ingrained into the mindset of Western Superiority/ Filipino Inferiority. Hopefully more Filipino-/American people will find this book and spread the richness of their culture too.

Nadine rocks!

In "Soul Oath", book two of the Everlast trilogy, Nadine kicks some serious butt.

This book takes place three months after the first book ended, Nadine is back in New York attending school and working at the hospital again. It doesn't take long before the chaos of the city erupts around Nadine and she is thrown into fighting off demons again. This time she has help in the form of Keisha and they along with Riasa are able to escape NY and head back to their hometowns.
This story is more action packed then the first book and has so many twist and turns it kept me on the edge of my seat. I can't tell you how things evolve between Micah, Victor and Nadine without giving some major things away but I can tell you I was not disappointed at all, in fact I purchased book 2.5 (Micha's POV) before I finished 50% of this book...it's that good!!!! I can't wait for book three to be released!!!

The story just gets better and better

Thankfully I got this only a few days after reading Destiny Gift & I started it straight away. Earlier I said that Destiny Gift had started a little slow, I also said I felt there were some slightly confusing parts to the story line. DON’T fear in this one.

The story picks up 3 months after Nadine last saw Micah, Ceris and Victor. She is back in New York, back to her job and school yet the action picks up right from the get go. Holy demonic bats, they were raining from the sky. The school is attacked, Nadine & Raisa find themselves on the run to try and get out of the city.

They are coupled with a cop and Keisha, a girl who looks after an ancient weapons exhibit. The fight to get out of the city is intense and fraught with danger, yet somehow Keisha turns into a ninja badass, kung fu kicking chick.

Micah appears and does all he can to get them out of there. Omni is on their trail.

Once free of the city Raisa, Keisha and Nadine go their separate ways and Nadine goes home to her family. Hurt and confused by the actions of Ceris, Victor and Micah she knows she is on borrowed time. One small contact from Victor and all hell breaks loose (literally) and Holy Moly gods of hell she is chased, hunted and all alone.

The next few chapters were hard to read (no spoilers!) suffice to say what happens to Nadine is beyond what any human should have to tolerate. What I loved about this book, and I do believe Juliana wrote with much deeper emotion was what Nadine endured brought out the roller coaster range of feelings you would have if you witnessed the horror Nadine had.

Her pain and suffering was palpable and so believable and when she finally got Micah to agree to the Soul Oath you just knew Nadine was on a one way path to hell.

On a lighter note, though I thoroughly enjoyed to shameless love triangle in the first book, I’m glad it didn’t go on through the 2nd. Micah, is delicious, divine, sexy and oh so confusing and his interaction and flirtatious manner with Nadine was like slowly devouring chocolate, sinfully sweet.

As with the first there were demons and bats and gods, Oh my! Double crossings, evil plots twists and Death Lords. I couldn’t count the number of times I felt I was on the top of a large roller coaster anticipating the drop, but when I did the whole wonderful story took my breath away.

Again, as with the first there was no cliff hanger ending. I’m fan girling Juliana for that BUT you know there is more to come. I hope Micah and Nadine can work out their ‘differences’ and get it on, but there is a small matter of a soul oath to get past. (What he did for her birthday at the Lake of life had me swooning, and had him added to my book boyfriend list) I’M LOVING THIS SERIES.

Can’t wait to get my hands on the next installment Cup of Life (0.5) which is a novella told from Micah’s POV…..it’s out in January and it will keep me going until Everlast #3 comes out :)
