The Jeep Cherokee XJ is a pioneering SUV that delivers commendable performance and off-road capability. More than 3 million Cherokee XJs were manufactured during its production run. However, when the XJs rolled off the production lines, they were built primarily for the street. As a result, XJs need crucial modifications and high-performance upgrades to make them better for off-road duty.

In this revised edition, author and veteran Cherokee expert Eric Zappe guides you through each stage of an XJ build, so you can take the mild-mannered, bone-stock XJ and upgrade it to a capable off-road performer. Zappe delves into suspension bolt-on improvements, including lift kits to increase ground clearance and suspension travel. He also covers high-performance shocks and long-arm suspensions. Wheels and tires are your vital link to the terrain, and he reveals all of the important considerations so you can select the right combination. XJs need a heavy-duty steering system to negotiate challenging off-road conditions, and Zappe explains several ways to upgrade the steering. Driveline and axle upgrades are an important part of the performance equation, so these improvements are covered as well. But he doesn't stop there; he also explores upgrades for the 2.5-, 2.8-, 4.0-liter engines so the Cherokee has more power for off-road performance. In addition, he covers some basic tips for adding skid plates and body strengthening.

If you're ready to go off road with your Cherokee but you're not planning to build a top-dollar off-road machine, this is the book for you. With the techniques and latest products described in this book, you will be able to upgrade your XJ to much higher level of performance and it will be at home both off-road and on.

Review
"If you plan on building and XJ, this is the book you need to have in your back pocket." (4 Wheel Drive and Sport Utility 2006-07-01)

"Filled with good tech, real-world examples of complete XJ builds, and helpful tidbits about your Jeep, the Jeep Cherokee XJ Builder's Guide is a great addition for the flex-box enthusiast." (4 Wheel & Off-Road 2008-03-01)

From the Back Cover
A book solely dedicated to turning a stock Jeep Cherokee XJ into a trail-worthy machine? Yes! Sure, it has four real doors and you can’t take the top off (well…), but Cherokee owners know that doesn’t make it a cute-ute. With two available 4-wheel-drive systems, solid axles front and rear, and a torquey 4.0-liter straight-6, the Cherokee is a very capable machine, especially when it’s modified the right way. This book is about building a useful, capable Cherokee for mountains, mud, desert, street, and everywhere in between. With the modifications explained on these pages, your Cherokee can take you just about anywhere you want to go, and get you back safely. Author Eric Zappe explains how to upgrade your Cherokee’s suspension, axles, differentials, engine, transfer case, wheels and tires, skid plates, and more using aftermarket and salvage-yard upgrades. Zappe even has special sections for basic driving and recovery techniques, info on the Comanche pickup, and a number of built-up Jeeps to give you ideas for your own Cherokee.

About the Author
Eric Zappe is a long-time dedicated Cherokee enthusiast. He uses his heavily modified Cherokee for rock crawling and other off-road activities. He is a member of NAXJA (North American XJ Association) and is president of the Sierra Chapter. Zappe has written one other book for CarTech: Jeep Cherokee XJ: Advanced Performance Modifications.

Perfect Book for Someone new to the Cherokee
By Chris
Good solid information on the Cherokee. I had virtually no prior knowledge of the Cherokee before purchasing this book, and I now feel that I have a good foundation to go forward with a mild build. Lots of information about the different options offered throughout the years, and many tips to include cooling and brake upgrades. If you're new to the Cherokee, or looking for mild to serious build ideas then this is a book you'll want to have in your shop library.

Best of a bad batch
By Matthew Lane
Of the three books in the villain series this is the best of the lot, which in its self is not saying much.

As with many "villain books" across quite a few different systems this one suffers from many different problems. The first problem is that the characters are just all so very ordinary. The point of the entire super hero genre is that individuals are unique: Unique in background, unique in power set, unique in appearance, unique in outlook. Unfortunately this series really falls down in that regard.

By and large the characters are woefully boring, with the exception of Doctor Destroyer & Shadow Destroyer: Possibly Mechanon depending on your predilection towards the old silver age robot villain concept. But having said that Doctor Destroyers generals were much less impressive, from a character design stand point, if not a number crunching stand point (since the writing is much more important then the system): For example character like Gigaton & Meteor come off as terminally disinteresting & they were the most interesting characters that Destroyer had in his employee.

Shadow Destroyer fairs a lot better in this regard, as does Mechanon, but neither really felt or that solid in this book. In fact all things considered both Destroyer & Shadow destroyer are better presented in the "Book of the Destroyer," a book only about those two characters.

The other big problem with this book is layout & presentation of data. When reading a villain book, the book should be trying to sell me on "The Villains" & make it feel like these villains can & do exist in a pre-existing comic book universe & now in my game. This does not read like that... This reads more like a street hawker trying to convince you that you really want to buy his cheap obvious knock off product. I can create villains for most systems in less then 20 minutes, in fact its quite fun; I come to a villain book for ideas from other people: The less work I have to do to insert it into my game the better.

Straight off the bat, the first thing I should see when I look at any given entry should be "the villain." The villain art work is the first entry point of access & the first entry point to interest for any reader: They should literally see the image of the character before even the name of the character. So strangely this book & the others in the series bury the image on page 2 & in some case page 3.

As for the art itself, it's not without a fair level of technical quality, yet it lacks for something: Any belief that these characters are actually super villains.

The designs are to loose, to sloppy & without any level of personal touches that make super villain costumes super. Half the costumes just don't suit the characters wearing them, either from the point of view of verisimilitude, or from the role of the character: for instance The Shadow Queen looks nothing like a queen, or a evil fairy tale step mother (even though we are expressly told half a dozen times, that that is her story role).

She is literally a master villain & a powerful sorceress in her own rights, with the complete power of the Shadow Realms at her disposal: She should look like it. She should be bedecked in spidery smoky gauss of shadowy mist, black leather with intricate engravings of constantly shifting designs, ornate jewellery of the finest quality & draped in a liquid silk cape of shadows... Not a knock off ball dress & a head dress that looks like it wouldn't be amiss in a Disney princess movie, 20 years ago.

As for art style, can we please pick one or two similar styles and stick to them? I know Hero publishing is well known for reusing artwork, but images like the coloured image of Sunburst really lets the book down... Especially when they are in the same team section as Phaze, who is drawn in a less cartoony fashion. The colouring of some of these old images also makes the discord between the styles even more obvious & jarring.

An on top of those two major issues, there are also a whole heap of smaller issues, including disinteresting or silly character backgrounds (which I wont go into depth on because I could write an entire 100 page novel on where the writing falls down in just this volume), tiny character images, huge under utilised border spacing, the horrible yellow layout & the use of multiple different distracting fonts for character headings.

Frankly, the biggest problem with this book seems to have is that it went for quantity over quality. There are too many substandard villains & to few villains who are worth investing your time in as a GM. In fact outside of the fact that character design (the number crunching) in champions takes forever & just isn't fun, the actual characters in this book could be largely dismissed & even reskinned entirely. I know many people would consider that an advantage, but if you can reskin an entire character as a different character, then that's a sign that your character is probably not all that memorable.

I would advise against picking up this, or any of the other books in the villain series, as this could be considered questionably the best of the series (with solo villains being the worst of the series).

Perfecting Pregnancy: Law, Disability, and the Future of Reproduction (Cambridge Disability Law and Policy Series), by Isabel Karpin, Kris

Prenatal and preimplantation testing technologies have offered unprecedented access to information about the genetic and congenital makeup of our prospective progeny. Future developments such as preconception testing, noninvasive prenatal testing, and more extensive preimplantation testing promise to increase that access further still. The result may be greater reproductive choice, but it also increases the burden on women and men to avail themselves of these technologies in order to avoid having a child who has a disability. The overwhelming question for legislators has been whether and, if so, how to regulate the use of these technologies in the face of compelling but seemingly contradictory claims about the advancement of reproductive choice and the dangers of eugenic or discriminatory effects. This book examines the evolution of this legislative oversight across a number of jurisdictions and explores the tensions and ambiguities that inform these laws.

From Publishers Weekly
When confronted with a life-threatening situation, 90% of people freeze or panic, says Gonzales in this exploration of what makes the remaining 10% stay cool, focused and alive. Gonzales (The Hero's Apprentice; The Still Point), who has covered survival stories for National Geographic Explorer, Outside and Men's Journal, uncovers the biological and psychological reasons people risk their lives and why some are better at it than others. In the first part of the book, the author talks to dozens of thrill-seekers-mountain climbers, sailors, jet pilots-and they all say the same thing: danger is a great rush. "Fear can be fun," Gonzales writes. "It can make you feel more alive, because it is an integral part of saving your own life." Pinpointing why and how those 10% survive is another story. "They are the ones who can perceive their situation clearly; they can plan and take correct action," Gonzales explains. Survivors, whether they're jet pilots landing on the deck of an aircraft carrier or boatbuilders adrift on a raft in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, share certain traits: training, experience, stoicism and a capacity for their logical neocortex (the brain's thinking part) to override the primitive amygdala portion of their brains. Although there's no surefire way to become a survivor, Gonzales does share some rules for adventure gleaned from the survivors themselves: stay calm, be decisive and don't give up. Remembering these rules when crisis strikes may be tough, but Gonzales's vivid descriptions of life in the balance will stay with readers.

From Booklist
What impels people to risk their lives by climbing mountains or deep-sea diving? What confluence of forces leads to drastic accidents? Why do some people survive disasters while others perish? A renowned journalist intrigued with risk, Gonzales conducts an in-depth and engrossing inquiry into the dynamics of survival. Relating one hair-raising true story after another about wilderness adventures gone catastrophically wrong and other calamities, Gonzales draws on sources as diverse and compelling as the Stoic philosophers and neuroscience to elucidate the psychological, physiological, and spiritual strengths that enable certain individuals to avoid fatal panic and make that crucial "transition from victim to survivor." People who survive being lost or adrift at sea, for instance, pay close attention to their surroundings and respect the wild. Gonzales also notes that survivors think of others, either helping a fellow sufferer or rallying to outsmart death in order to spare loved ones anguish. The study of survival offers an illuminating portal into the human psyche, and Gonzales, knowledgeable and passionate, is a compelling and trustworthy guide. Donna Seaman

Valuable, Stoic-Centric Advice For Accident Survival, and Life Survival
By Charles
I read Laurence Gonzales’ “Deep Survival: Who Lives, Who Dies, And Why” as a counterpoint to Amanda Ripley’s “The Unthinkable.” Both are survivor books, very different in their approach, but with significant conclusions in common. Gonzales focuses more on accidents: unexpected twists that challenge people in stressful situations they chose to put themselves in, primarily wilderness and sporting recreational activities. Gonzales focuses little on true disasters, where our daily lives are suddenly interrupted by a wholly unexpected catastrophic and immediately life threatening event from which we must escape; Ripley focuses on true disasters. Gonzales focuses a lot on scientific, technical biological explanations; Ripley talks a lot about pseudo-scientific evolutionary biology. Gonzales is a more florid writer on a semi-autobiographical quest following a life of adventure; Ripley is a straightforward young writer trying to analyze what others do.

But this review is about Gonzales’ book, which aspires to “tell people [not] what to do but rather to be a search for a deeper understanding that will allow them to know what to do when the time comes.” His book tries to provide an overarching philosophy, really, for life survival, not just survival when you’re lost in the woods or hanging off a mountain. In fact, if there is a unifying theme of “Deep Survival,” other than survival itself, it is Stoicism. Quotations from Epictetus and Marcus Aurelius litter the book, and their ideas permeate every page. For example, from Epictetus: “On the occasion of every accident that befalls you, remember to turn to yourself and inquire what power you have for turning it to use.” This is because Gonzales believes, with demonstrated reason, that a Stoic approach to unexpected twists in life will maximize your chances for survival, in whatever situation you find yourself.

Gonzales ties all his stories and thoughts back to himself—back to his own growing appreciation for these principles he discovers during his life, and most of all back to his father’s experiences in World War Two and the rest of his life (he was a bomber pilot alive at the time this book was written, 2004). If you don’t like the personal angle, it may seem a bit navel-gazing. But he does a good job making himself and his family relevant, and after all, it’s his book, not merely a textbook for the wanna-be survivor.

Gonzales spends the first half of the book evaluating “How Accidents Happen.” In other words, most of what he focuses on is preventable survival problems. For him, if you stay home, there will be no survival problem. And, for the most part, if you go out into the wilderness and make the right choices, there will also be no survival problem. What Gonzales wants to know in this section is why people act in ways that create situations in which they must survive. His conclusion, shot through the book, is that it’s down to uncontrollable emotions, mostly for bad, but also for good. Quoting Remarque’s description in “All Quiet On The Western Front” of men who, having been at the front for a while, thrown themselves to the ground on sheer reflex, even before they can hear or sense a shell, Gonzales concludes “Emotion is an instinctive response aimed at self-preservation.” But that same instinctive response can also betray.

There is much talk of dopamine, brain structures, stress hormones, memory, and, in the end, “that quality which is perhaps the only one which may be said with certainty to make for success, self-control.” Our brains conspire to impel us by inciting emotions to do things that are not rational and not a good idea, but seem like a good idea to our brains. We need this type of decision making, since it is fast and effective, but it can kill us, if the emotion leads us to do something objectively stupid. Panic is only one of those emotions; pleasurable emotions are also extremely powerful. Controlling those emotions without losing their benefit is everything. And not just the control of manipulation—also the control of knowing what you don’t know. “A survivor expects the world to keep changing and keeps his senses always tuned to: What’s up? The survivor is continuously adapting.” “[T]he survivor ‘does not impose pre-existing patterns on new information, but rather allows new information to reshape [his mental models].’”

Of course, even choosing activities carefully while engaging in rigid self-control is often not enough. Accident always happen; it is the nature of systems, even simple systems. Small failures are self-correcting or at least not catastrophic, until the day they combine with other happenings to create total failure. As with a sand pile, which slides and collapses in unpredictable ways, you can tell that an accident will happen despite your best efforts, but not how or when. (It helps, of course, not to be stupid or have undesirable characteristics. Gonzales, like Ripley, casually slags fat people as unlikely to survive.) This is a commonality of systems: Gonzales notes that Clausewitz pointed out that military systems seemed simple, and therefore easy to manage, but “terrible friction . . . is everywhere in contact with chance, with consequences that are impossible to calculate.” Again, Clausewitz says a general must not “expect a level of precision in his operation that simply cannot be achieved owing to this very friction.” And trying to impose our own reality on actual reality when that friction starts to bite is disastrous.

Even if you choose carefully and have self-control, and avoid a system failure, you may still end up in a survival situation by simple failure of knowledge. If you don’t bother to inquire how the local waves differ from the waves you are familiar with, you may end up in trouble that you could have easily avoided. Gonzales does not promise that everything will be OK; he merely offers analysis and advice for maximizing the chance of avoiding problems.

Gonzales then turns to “Survival”—what to do when, for whatever reason, you’ve ended up in a survival situation. Many people “bend the map”—they try to, when lost in an unfamiliar area, rationalize how they are really in a familiar area. Don’t do that. Be as Stoic as possible. Accept your fate yet work to change it. Never follow rules given by others just because they are rules or because they are the group. Never give up. Fatigue is mostly psychological and difficult to recover from; rest proactively rather than pushing yourself. Balance risk and reward, then act decisively—be a “man of action.” Pray—even if it doesn’t work, it helps you focus and take action. (Although neither Gonzales nor Ripley emphasize it, both note that religious people are far more likely to survive.) “Plan the flight and fly the plan. But don’t fall in love with the plan.” Give yourself small goals and achieve small successes; follow a routine; create order. Focus on yourself, not on blaming others, or relying on them. And, ultimately, you may still die. “But what can be earned is a certain nobility—not in the sense of aristocratic status but in the sense of striving for quality and dignity of behavior and living.” The last is said by a wilderness firefighter of his daily job, but it can just as well be applied to a survivor in a single desperate situation.

None of what Gonzales says is all that startling. I imagine many of us would list some variations on these if asked the question, “what should one do to survive?” But Gonzales weaves these principles into a coherent whole, and links them to a range of interesting stories about real people. As with Ripley’s book, whose more cut-and-dried lessons Gonzales echoes, the reader can benefit quite a bit from this book, if you read carefully and absorb the lessons.

Others will run about like headless chickens
By Curt Seefeldt
What a book!!! Personally, I think everyone ought to read it. Why? Well, for one thing in today's world, as well as in past history, "things happen". Is everyone prepared to deal with that? Not on your life. Some people will just simply freeze up. Others will run about like headless chickens. This book goes into explaining what happens when a crisis hits and why people act the way they do. The thing is, with the knowledge given in this book one can well.....sort of "program" their mind to at least try to respond properly. Also, one of the great things about this book is the way it explains what is going on. Easy to understand, so you don't need to be an astrophysist. This book is not about laying in food supplies or building bomb shelters. It IS a book that will help you keep your head when things go really bad.

Many levels of meaning...
By Thomas J. Brucia
This is one of the best 20 books I've read in my life. If read on multiple levels, it is far more than about survival in "adventure sports" or combat. It's about how to handle all kinds of disasters that we all eventually face. The book is elegantly written, too. I have been a sea kayaker, scuba diver, and backpacker over the course of my life and as I read I remembered incidents and people over decades of my life. (No fatalities thank goodness, though some deserved to die). As for myself, this book has kept me from doing some insanely stupid things -- and reminded my of dumb things I've done that should have killed me. I have recommended this book to any number of friends (and I heard of it from my closest brother). I always tell them, "If you read this book and think of it as simply a series of people making mistakes, you haven't 'gotten it'. Look underneath and find the deeper things and you will find them."

Home Again
I’M BILLY SURE—PIZZA lover, dog owner, and kid inventor. I do a lot of different things, including talking to my mom over video chat. Why do I talk to her over video chat? Because my mom has a super-confidential, TOP-SECRET secret—she’s a spy, and she’s always off doing spy things!

Yup, that’s right, my mom is a spy, complete with coded messages, hidden documents, secret missions... you know, all the cool spy stuff.

So sometimes, when she’s away on secret missions, the only way I can talk to her is over video chat. Like now.

“I miss you, Billy,” Mom says from my laptop screen. “I can’t believe it’s been two weeks!”

“Me too,” I say. “Wow. Two weeks already!”

Okay, so backstory. I didn’t always know my mom is a spy. In fact, I only just found out a few weeks ago. Mom used to claim she was a scientist doing research for the government. I thought this was true until my thirteenth birthday, when she surprised me by sharing her real profession. And then she surprised me even more by taking me to her agency’s Spy Academy, where I took spy classes and built inventions to save secret agents on dangerous missions.

This is all 100 percent real. Mom was so impressed with all the inventions my company, SURE THINGS, INC., has produced—inventions like the ALL BALL, which turns into any sports ball; the SIBLING SILENCER, which, uh, silences your siblings; and the STINK SPECTACULAR, which smells super gross but tastes super great. We’re also the company that created GROSS-TO-GOOD POWDER, which makes gross food taste delicious. (If you eat in my school cafeteria, you’re welcome!) Our latest invention is the NO-TROUBLE BUBBLE, an impenetrable bubble where nothing can get to you. (Not even those silenced siblings!)

But it’s been a while since Sure Things, Inc. has come out with a new product, what with my being away inventing at Spy Academy. That was a lot of fun, but I realized that I’m not cut out to be a full-fledged secret agent. I also missed my best friend and Sure Things, Inc.’s CFO, Manny Reyes. So I decided to come home, even if it meant going back to boring “normal” school and dealing with Emily, my boring “normal” older sister.

Like Mom said, it’s been two weeks since I got home from Spy Academy, and this video chat is the first time I get to catch up with her. Seeing her face is really nice. I can almost forget that she isn’t safe and sound at home, rather than possibly battling DANGEROUS NUNCHUK-WIELDING NINJAS in—well, who knows where the lair of dangerous nunchuk-wielding Ninjas is!

“It feels like I was just at Spy Academy,” I tell Mom, “although I’ve been pretty busy. That’s because I told everyone I was on vacation in Barbados, and I had to do a whole report on my trip to Barbados in social studies class. Thankfully, Manny helped me with that research.”

Mom laughs.

“Sorry about the extra assignment. Has the rest of school been all right?” she asks.

“It’s been okay. When I was away, the Fillmore Middle School Inventors Club elected a temporary president. Do you remember Clayton Harris?”

“Of course!” Mom says. “He was, um—”

“Not super cool, yeah,” I say. “The one whose favorite activity is going to the dentist. Well, he was elected club president, and I decided to let him keep that position. I still want to help the club, but I don’t have time to run the day-to-day details anymore. Besides, Clayton has done really well as the president. He’s found his place. He’s made new friends, he’s a good leader of the club, and he’s even become kind of popular—or at least less unpopular.”

Mom smiles widely. “That is WONDERFUL!” she says. “Who knows, maybe Clayton will be president of the country someday, all thanks to your club!”

I try to imagine Clayton running for president or nestled into Mount Rushmore or kissing babies, but all I can picture is the same kid who blew chocolate milk out of his nose at my birthday party.

“And how are things at Sure Things, Inc.? Is Emily still helping out?” Mom asks.

“Sure Things, Inc. is okay,” I say. “Manny and I are working on something really big—a hovercraft. And now we’re feeling the pressure to get this invention out as our Next Big Thing.” Just to fill you in, our hovercraft is going to be the coolest invention ever. It’ll really fly and it’ll change the face of transportation as we know it. There’s just one little problem. We haven’t quite figured out how to make it fly. Manny is waiting on some “QUALITY WINGED MATERIALS” to arrive from overseas. I’m not sure exactly what that means, but Manny says they’re the latest in hover technology.

“As for Emily, she and Manny got along okay while I was away, but she’s been in a pretty grumpy mood ever since I got home.”

“What now?” asks Mom. “I talked to her on her birthday a few days ago and she seemed perfectly happy.”

Right—Emily’s fifteenth birthday. She might have been all smiles on her video chat with Mom, but the day was anything but fun for me and Dad.

It started like this: Emily woke up and started whining for Dad to take her to get her learner permit. Honestly, I didn’t see why the permit was such a big deal. All it does is allow her to take a driver’s test next year when she’s sixteen—or to drive with an instructor now. It’s not like she can pick up her friends and drive to the mall by herself.

But anyway, Emily kept on complaining.

Dad tried to remind her that it was a weekend, so the drivers office was closed.

“It’s not fair,” she sniffed. “Mom took Billy on a trip for his birthday! No one’s offered me a trip. I want to go somewhere. And I can’t even get my stupid learner permit.”

“Actually, I was working the whole time I was at Spy Academy,” I tried to remind her, but Emily ignored me. Emily usually ignores things I say when they don’t support her argument. So she complained ALL DAY until the next morning when Dad took her to the drivers office first thing. Then Emily started pestering Dad about when he would take her out to learn to drive.

I tell Mom all of this and watch her expression change to a frown.

“I wish I could be there to teach her how to drive,” she says. “I always feel so guilty that work keeps me away from you kids.”

“It’s okay,” I tell her. “Dad will totally teach Emily how to drive, but he’s just a little busy right now. His artwork was accepted to an art gallery.”

My dad is an artist, and a pretty good one—if you consider close-ups of my dog Philo’s toenails “pretty good.” He has a studio in the backyard—a converted garden shed, actually, but he likes it. He can spend days at a time out there painting and be perfectly happy. I’ll never understand why a gallery is interested in his WACKY PORTRAITS, but I’m proud of him anyway.

I think Mom is thinking the same thing I am because she starts to laugh, which makes me laugh. In a few seconds we’re both roaring to the point of tears, imagining Dad at an art gallery showing fancy art-lovers some portraits of Philo’s butt!

“So what’s going on over at Spy Academy?” I ask when I stop laughing long enough to catch my breath. “How’s Agent Paul?”

Agent Paul is my mom’s partner on her spy missions. And oh yeah, he just happens to be an octopus.

“He’s doing SWIMMINGLY,” Mom replies, chuckling at her own silly joke, one I’m sure she’s made a hundred times before.

“But seriously,” she continues, “I’ve been keeping a very close eye on Drew. So far, at least, he seems to be behaving. He even helped us catch another online scam artist.”

I frown at the mention of Drew. At Spy Academy I became very close friends with him, but then Manny found out my new friend was actually the nephew of Sure Things, Inc.’s arch nemesis, Alistair Swiped, CEO of Swiped Stuff, Inc. That wouldn’t have been a problem, except Drew was trying to sabotage my inventions the whole time! Like uncle, like nephew, I guess. I let Mom know, but she thought it was best for Drew to stay at Spy Academy. Maybe some of his EVIL GENIUS can be tamed under careful supervision.

Now that I stop to think about it, it really is amazing how much has gone on in the couple of weeks since I got back. Just talking about all of it makes me tired... which reminds me that I’ve got a busy day of school and inventing ahead tomorrow.

“I think I’m going to go to sleep, Mom,” I say. “Lots to do tomorrow. We’ve really got to get this hovercraft out ASAP.”

“Okay, honey, get some sleep. I love you.”

“I love you too, Mom,” I say.

My monitor goes blank.

I’m always a little sad at the end of a video chat with Mom, but somehow, knowing the truth about her makes it all a bit easier. My mom is off saving people. And that’s pretty cool.

Destroyer of the gods: Early Christian Distinctiveness in the Roman World, by Larry W. Hurtado

"Silly," "stupid," "irrational," "simple." "Wicked," "hateful," "obstinate," "anti-social." "Extravagant," "perverse." The Roman world rendered harsh judgments upon early Christianity―including branding Christianity "new." Novelty was no Roman religious virtue.

Nevertheless, as Larry W. Hurtado shows in Destroyer of the gods, Christianity thrived despite its new and distinctive features and opposition to them. Unlike nearly all other religious groups, Christianity utterly rejected the traditional gods of the Roman world. Christianity also offered a new and different kind of religious identity, one not based on ethnicity. Christianity was distinctively a "bookish" religion, with the production, copying, distribution, and reading of texts as central to its faith, even preferring a distinctive book-form, the codex. Christianity insisted that its adherents behave differently: unlike the simple ritual observances characteristic of the pagan religious environment, embracing Christian faith meant a behavioral transformation, with particular and novel ethical demands for men. Unquestionably, to the Roman world, Christianity was both new and different, and, to a good many, it threatened social and religious conventions of the day.

In the rejection of the gods and in the centrality of texts, early Christianity obviously reflected commitments inherited from its Jewish origins. But these particular features were no longer identified with Jewish ethnicity and early Christianity quickly became aggressively trans-ethnic―a novel kind of religious movement. Its ethical teaching, too, bore some resemblance to the philosophers of the day, yet in contrast with these great teachers and their small circles of dedicated students, early Christianity laid its hard demands upon all adherents from the moment of conversion, producing a novel social project.

Christianity's novelty was no badge of honor. Called atheists and suspected of political subversion, Christians earned Roman disdain and suspicion in equal amounts. Yet, as Destroyer of the gods demonstrates, in an irony of history the very features of early Christianity that rendered it distinctive and objectionable in Roman eyes have now become so commonplace in Western culture as to go unnoticed. Christianity helped destroy one world and create another.

Review
"This is a fascinating survey of the features that made Christianity distinctive in antiquity and so―ultimately―successful. Hurtado discusses the Christian concept of an exclusive veneration of God, the trans-ethnic and trans-local religious identity, the central role of books and learning and distinctive and challenging forms of behavior within their ancient context. The glimpses into the first three centuries may even inspire contemporary Christians to find their identity and negotiate between social assimilation and difference."―Jörg Frey, Chair of New Testament Studies, University of Zrich

"Hurtado sets out to awaken us from our 'cultural amnesia,' to remind us that the origin of Christianity and its remarkable success has more to do with its ability to distinguish itself from other religions in antiquity than to be one with them. Hurtado challenges readers to reconsider what have become common assumptions of religion today―that there is a single God and that religious affiliation is a voluntary choice. Without the distinctive rise of Christianity, none of these would be so."―April D. DeConick, Chair of the Department of Religion, Rice University

"Comprehensive and quietly authoritative, Larry Hurtado's Destroyer of the gods offers its readers a three-centuries' tour of the Christianizing Mediterranean. The sweep of his panorama never sacrifices the liveliness of telling detail. For those who ask, 'What was distinctive about this new religious movement?' Hurtado offers thoughtful answers. Make room for this book, whether on bedside table or in classroom syllabus―or both."―Paula Fredriksen, Distinguished Visiting Professor of Comparative Religion at the Hebrew University

"In this very accessible and readable book, Larry Hurtado shows how really distinct early Christianity was in comparison to its surrounding cultures of Greco-Roman paganism and Judaism. This was not only true for aspects of early Christian life that are somewhat familiar to many of us, such as its stricter sexual code, but even here Hurtado shows that the early Christians took their code 'to the streets' and opposed the double standard of their day. Destroyer of the gods is an exciting read across a wide range of interests in early Christianity coupled with many comparisons to religious life today."―Jan N. Bremmer, Professor Emeritus of Religious Studies, University of Groningen

"In this lucid and wide-ranging book, Larry Hurtado convincingly shows how novel and distinctive early Christianity was in the religious world of the first century. He argues that early Christianity was in many respects a different kind of religion, and was revolutionary in the way that 'religion' has been understood ever since. Along the way, Hurtado sheds much light on the New Testament and on second century Christianity. He hopes to enhance 'our appreciation of the remarkable religious movement' that was early Christianity, and he admirably achieves exactly that."―Paul Trebilco, Professor of New Testament, University of Otago

"Clear and enlightening, Hurtado's coverage of the first centuries of Christianity explains why it was different, more philosophy than religion, and how its emergence as the supreme religion in the Roman world is less paradoxical than usually argued. This account is the nearest one can get to meeting an early Christian and quizzing them."―Robin Cormack, Emeritus Professor, Courtauld Institute of Art

"Hurtado, emeritus professor of New Testament language, literature, and theology in the School of Divinity at the University of Edinburgh, discusses the history and evolution of ecumenical Christian practices in this elegantly straightforward book...Hurtado does an excellent job of walking readers through...how very odd early Christianity was for its place and time and how it came to overturn and replace ancient systems and beliefs. Hurtado writes with a measured tone and learned authority. Those wishing to know more about early Christianity will find much here."―Publishers Weekly"Hurtado's book, written to appeal to a wide audience, explains just how odd and objectionable Jesus' followers, their counter-establishment church, and even their writings looked during the first three centuries of the Christian movement."―The Christian Century"An important scholarly look at the birth of Christianity within the Roman embrace."―Library Journal"Whether one applauds or disdains the values of contemporary Western culture, what we assume to be good, true, and normal has been shaped to a surprising degree by early Christianity. Demolishing taken-for-granted assumptions about what religion was, is, and can be, Hurtado's provocative exploration deserves a broad audience."―Matthew W. Bates, Quincy University, OnScript"Destroyer of the gods is a quick and fascinating read. Professor Hurtado's book allows Christians to explore how a distinctive identity has always been deemed a threat, so that they may better identify how they will practice their faith at a time when this practice is becoming increasingly distinct. The book may be read, however, by non-Christians as well, to explore the dynamics of the collisions between any culture rooted in earthly power and those (of any faith) who profess to set limits on such power in the service of a higher Power."―Karl C. Schaffenburg, University Bookman"Larry Hurtadoreminds us that early Christianity emerged as a profoundly countercultural movement, one that could never be mistaken as mirroring the values of its environment."―Ronald P. Byars, Presbyterian Outlook"Destroyer of the gods is a very clear and readable book and is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand issues dealt with in early Christian writers, particularly Paul's letters. I thoroughly recommend it to students of the New Testament and more widely as a reminder that there is a cost to a church which stands out in its social and cultural setting."―Tim Gill, ANVIL: Journal of Theology and Mission

Superb Book on Early Christian Distinctives
By Sean McDowell, Ph.D.
What was unique about Christian practices and teachings in the first three centuries of the church? And how did such a minority faith—which was considered irrelevant, extreme, and at odd with the role “religion” is supposed to play in a pagan society—ultimately prevail? In his recent book Destroyer of the gods, New Testament scholar Larry Hurtado focuses on the first of these questions. But his book also has powerful implications for the second.

Hurtado explains how Christianity was viewed by pagans in ancient Rome: “In the eyes of many of that time, early Christianity was odd, bizarre, and in some ways even dangerous. For one thing, it did not fit with what ‘religion’ was for people then. Indicative of this, Roman-era critics designated it as a perverse ‘superstition.’”[1]

Although Christians in the early church aimed to be good citizens, and to show due respect and care for both their neighbors and the State (as Christians do today), their beliefs in Jesus as the one true God put them at odds with the prevailing culture (as Christian beliefs and practices increasingly do in our secular culture today).

In fact, as Hurtado observes, Christian beliefs were even considered more problematic to Rome than Jewish beliefs. How so? While Jews also refused to honor pagan deities, there is little evidence Roman-era Jews aimed to persuade the masses to abandon their gods. And yet this is exactly what Christians did. In other words, Christians were often allowed to hold Christian beliefs in private, but should expect to sacrifice those beliefs when they enter the public arena.

Roman authorities had little problem that Christians worshipped Jesus as God. Their problem, however, was that Christians refused to worship other deities. While Christians considered worshipping pagan deities idolatry, Romans considered such behavior defiance to the state. Jews were often excused since their behavior could be “chalked up” as a matter of national peculiarity. But Christians could not appeal to any such ethnic privilege. As a result of their refusal to worship the pagan deities, Christians experienced popular abuse, intellectual condemnation, and persecution on a local and (eventually) statewide level. And yet, amazingly, Christianity prevailed.

There are many factors that can help explain the growth of Christianity. But as Hurtado points out in Destroyer of the gods, Christian distinctives must be taken into consideration as a piece of the puzzle. Consider a few Christian distinctives, which are often taken for granted today:

1. When people worship God, Christians claimed they should withdrawal from worshipping the gods of their families, cities, and peoples. The exclusivist stance of Christianity was so offensive that Christians were often labeled “atheists.”

2. Christians emphasized that there is one transcendent God who passionately loves his people and can be related to personally. Pagans often spoke of the love of gods toward humans in terms of philia, which indicates friendship. But Christians spoke of God with the Greek term agapē, which connotes a deep love and firm commitment to the one loved.

3. Christianity was a “bookish” religion. Like Jews, Christians read Scripture publicly, produced voluminous numbers of texts, and committed remarkable resources to copying and disseminating them widely. In fact, in their eagerness to disseminate Scripture, Christians were at the leading edge of book technology of the second and third centuries.

4. Christianity uniquely linked religious beliefs with ethical living. As a result, Christians were on the leading edge of overturning popular practices in ancient Rome such as infant exposure, gladiator battles, sexual abuse of children, and sexual perversity. Christians uniquely called men to the same kind of sexual loyalty demanded of women.

5. Christianity was uniquely diverse. In ancient Rome, there was social stratification between men and women, slaves and free, rich and poor. But Christians began with assemblies that were diverse in gender, age, and social status. Even the least important members of Roman society, such as women and slaves, were considered equal members in the church.

There are many other Christian distinctives in the first century, but if you want to read them, you’re going to have to check out Destroyer of the gods. If you are interested in comparative religion or the ancient roots of Christianity, and how this may apply to the Christian faith today, you will thoroughly enjoy the book.

One of the most IMPORTANT works on Early Christianity in a LONG time!!
By sojotheo
Larry W. Hurtado is Emeritus Professor of New Testament Language, Literature and Theology in the School of Divinity at the University of Edinburgh. Hurtado has authored numerous books related to early Christianity, including Lord Jesus Christ: Devotion to Jesus in Earliest Christianity and The Earliest Christian Artifacts: Manuscripts and Christian Origins. Most recently, Hurtado has written a blockbuster of a book and thought-provoking investigation into the distinctiveness of early Christianity within the Greco-Roman context.

Destroyer of the gods: Early Christian Distinctiveness in the Roman World is an important and well-thought monograph that explores various aspects of the early Christian movement. The goal of the book is to display the uniqueness of early Christianity in the vast religious landscape of the Greco-Roman world. The book begins with a quick survey of early Christianity through the lenses of non-Christians, including both Jewish and Pagan critiques of Christians. Hurtado concludes, “a good many outsiders, who were the overwhelming majority of the populace, regarded Christians and Christianity as objectionably different and certainly not simply one group among an undifferentiated lot” (p. 35). It is this discovery that establishes the subsequent chapters as the reader is guided through the distinctiveness of early Christian ethics, worship, and more.

The entire book is fascinating and chocked full of rich historical commentary on the Christian movement of the second century. However, one of the most exciting chapters in the book has to do with the early Christian interest with the written word. That is, according to Hurtado, the early Christian movement was particularly interested in books—a “bookish” religion. The implications of this fly in the face of the popular misnomer that early Christians were primarily concerned with oral tradition rather than written words. Early Christianity, according to Hurtado, was uniquely fond of reading, writing, copying, and circulating text. In fact, the modern book likely discovers its origins in the early Christian utilization of the codex. Thus, Hurtado concludes, “the young Christian movement [was] distinctively text oriented in context of the varied religious environment of that time . . . ‘textuality’ was central, and, from the outset, early Christianity was, indeed, ‘a bookish religion’” (p. 141).

Destroyer of the gods: Early Christian Distinctiveness in the Roman World by Larry W. Hurtado is a worthwhile investment for anyone interested in early Christianity. Hurtado is usually lucid in his presentation, but this book easily tops the charts of Hurtado’s life works. The reader will likely appreciate Hurtado’s interaction with contemporary scholarship and sensitivity to make the subject matter accessible to a wide range of readership. While much more could surely be said about Hurtado’s treatment of early Christian ethics and worship, in my opinion, the chapter outlined above is alone worth the price of the book. It comes highly recommended!

I received a review copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255: “Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising.

A Provocative Read on both the distinctiveness of Christianity and its capital contribution to the western conception of religio
By Todd Murphy
Larry Hurtado has produced a fantastic read here defining not only the distinctive character of the early Christian social movement in the Hellenistic-Roman world, but also its capital contribution to Western civilization and how we conceive religion in general today.

Hurtado presents a litany of perspectives on early Christian practice, traditions, and above all, personal and social ethics. If I were to define Hurtado's position in a nutshell it would say (A) Christianity was unique for its broad and consistent ethical teaching, and (B) it radically determined the direction of Western civilization in its universal expectation that all mankind, Christian are not, were/are bound by a universal standard of Divine law. Finall (C) it was this ethical teaching and influence that lead to its overall success.

I found Hurtado's book deeply insightful. While I wanted to give it a 5 star rating, and I would for thesis and content, I feel that the prose was somewhat long winded and repetative. I honestly feel that book could have easily been 35% shorter and actually improve presentation and make the subject matter hit harder. The book is for sure well researched displaying the breadth of Hurtado's expertise. Nevertheless, for researchers, more subtitles and sharper table of contents would have been welcome.
