About the Author
Dr. Carl S. Warren is Professor Emeritus of Accounting at the University of Georgia, Athens. Dr. Warren has taught classes at the University of Georgia, University of Iowa, Michigan State University, and University of Chicago. He focused his teaching efforts on principles of accounting and auditing. Dr. Warren received his PhD from Michigan State University and his BBA and MA from the University of Iowa. During his career, Dr. Warren published numerous articles in professional journals, including The Accounting Review, Journal of Accounting Research, Journal of Accountancy, The CPA Journal, and Auditing: A Journal of Practice and Theory. Dr. Warren has served on numerous committees of the American Accounting Association, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and the Institute of Internal Auditors. He also has consulted with numerous companies and public accounting firms. His outside interests include handball, golf, skiing, backpacking, and fly-fishing.

Dr. James M. Reeve is Professor Emeritus of Accounting and Information Management at the University of Tennessee. Dr. Reeve taught full-time as part of the accounting faculty for twenty-five years after graduating with his PhD from Oklahoma State University. He presently teaches part-time at UT. His teaching efforts focused on Senior Executive MBA programs. His research interests are varied and include work in managerial accounting, supply chain management, lean manufacturing, and information management. He has published more than forty articles in academic and professional journals, including Journal of Cost Management, Journal of Management Accounting Research, Accounting Review, Management Accounting Quarterly, Supply Chain Management Review, and Accounting Horizons. He has consulted or provided training around the world for a variety of organizations, including Boeing, Procter & Gamble, Norfolk Southern, Hershey Foods, Coca-Cola, and Sony. When not writing books, Dr. Reeve plays golf and is involved in faith-based activities.

Dr. Jonathan Duchac is the Wayne Calloway Professor of Accounting and Acting Associate Dean of Accounting Programs at Wake Forest University. He earned his PhD in accounting from the University of Georgia and currently teaches introductory and advanced courses in financial accounting. Dr. Duchac has received a number of awards during his career, including the Wake Forest University Outstanding Graduate Professor Award, the T.B. Rose award for Instructional Innovation, and the University of Georgia Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Dr. Duchac has served as Accounting Advisor to Merrill Lynch Equity Research, where he worked with research analysts in reviewing and evaluating the financial reporting practices of public companies. He has testified before the U.S. House of Representatives, the Financial Accounting Standards Board, and the Securities and Exchange Commission and has worked with a number of major public companies on financial reporting and accounting policy issues. In addition to his professional interests, Dr. Duchac is an avid mountain biker and snow skier.

Where did all that information that in the cells of living organisms come from in the first place?

Bring your calculus and probability and statistics books with you when you sit down to read this book. Also, you will need a good, clear knowledge of molecular biology and the cell's design and processes to really understand all of what Yockey is telling us. However, you can cheat, not read the math, and still understand that in large measure Yockey is right. Biology is basically a system of information and communication with in the cell. It is now clear to all concerned that the cell has a system of communication which it uses to create proteins and the essential products of life, construction of the components, and development of the processes that cause life to exist. Yockey spends quite a bit of time describing how the Genetic code works and is almost perfect in conceiving genetic information for life. He tries to explore how it got to be perfect, given the short time available on thee earth between the condensation of water and the achievement of life, and decides, it is just unknowable to us today. He then spends a great deal of time looking at the science of "how life started in the first place", traces the history of the science, and finally decides "it is just unknowable.' This "unknowable fact" is disconcerting to most people, by Yockey essentially tells us to "grow up and get over it". Too much time has passed since the creation of the first life, and we are no closer to an explanation than the ancient Greeks were. It is just unknowable. Good book that everyone interested in the science of life should read. But be warned, this is not a novel; it is not a real quick read.

Information Theory as a Foundation of Biology

The previous book of Hubert P. Yockey, 'Information theory and molecular biology', published in 1992, was unfortunately out of print for many years. Publication of 'Information theory, evolution, and the origin of life' makes available much of its material. The scope of the new book has moreover been broadened to encompass the hot topics mentioned in the title.

The academic world is divided into narrow compartments, each having its own methods, language, habits and gurus. Communication between them is made difficult by the lack of a common language so they most often ignore each other. When a concept from one of them eventually penetrates another one, it often assumes a superficial form which leads to misunderstandings. Although this may sometimes be better than plain ignorance, it results in rooting prejudices wrongly believed to hold true in other disciplines, and they live long for lack of proper internal criticism. Yockey is at the antipodes of this parochial system. His life-long efforts have been intended to convince biologists that information theory, a discipline originating in communication engineering, is the proper tool for dealing with molecular biology, hence should be at the heart of biology as a whole. He possesses to a high degree the needed didactic talents, as well as an extreme rigor in vocabulary and reasoning. Not only Yockey transcends disciplinary barriers, but also the famous divide between the 'two cultures'. His extremely broad scholarship is not purely scientific, but also historical, philosophical and literary. All chapters of the book bear in epigraph quotations from poets as well as from scientists or philosophers of all times, always wonderfully relevant to the subject matter. Similarly, many excellent quotations pepper the text. Yockey obviously does not think that scientific rigor demands dullness. On the contrary, the book is written in a witty and often caustic style. It abounds with historical anecdotes and comments, often intended to rehabilitate forgotten authors of major concepts or discoveries and to denounce usurped fames (one may disagree with some abrupt judgements).

As an engineer, I am convinced that information theory is the proper tool for dealing with molecular biology. Indeed, genomes communicate the genetic message as sequences of symbols (that these symbols are molecules does not mean they are relevant to chemistry only), and information theory is precisely the science of communication by means of symbol sequences. As a mathematical science, its results consist of theorems which can be thought of as predetermined forms which need 'only' to be filled with biological matter. But Shannon, the founding father of information theory, warned us that this task is far from trivial: 'Seldom do more than a few of nature's secrets give way at one time. [...] A thorough understanding of the mathematical foundations and its communication application is surely a prerequisite to other applications. I personally believe that many of the concepts of information theory will prove useful in these other fields [i.e., social sciences] but the establishing of such applications is not a trivial matter of translating words to a new domain, but rather the slow tedious process of hypothesis and experimental verification.' (from 'The Bandwagon', 1956, in 'Claude Elwood Shannon collected papers', edited by N.J.A. Sloane and A.D. Wyner, IEEE Press, 1993, page 462). Although Shannon made these comments about social sciences, I think that they perfectly apply to biology. Yockey's efforts are precisely aimed at letting biologists understand how relevant and potentially rewarding to their discipline is information theory.

Besides it presents compelling arguments in favor of the use of information theory in biology, the book also considers biological evolution and the origin of life. Since the genome is the medium which transmits the hereditary information through time, information theory is relevant to evolution just as it is to genetics. The book also critically reviews the many scientific and philosophical hypotheses about the origin of life, and shows that none of the alleged scenarios is likely to properly describe the events that actually occurred. The origin of life may well remain unknowable. Similarly, the mathematicians know since G�del that propositions may be undecidable so, within a given system of axioms, it may be impossible to prove true results. The algorithmic information theory explains why it is so in a surprisingly simple manner: it results from the necessarily finite amount of available information. That the origin of life may remain a mystery forever is the bad news of the book. The good news is that information theory enables dealing with life phenomena by 'measuring, counting and weighting together with reasonings from postulates or axioms', a sentence which is quoted from Socrates at the very beginning of the book. Using information theory, biology can thus reach the status of a quantitative science. Biologists did not yet realize their luck, however. The book bears in epigraph a quotation from Niccolo Machiavelli who very lucidly states how difficult and dangerous it is to '[...] initiate a new order of things. For the reformer has ennemies in all those who profit by the old order, and only lukewarm defenders in all those who would profit by the new order'. Yockey's extraordinary book leaves by no means its reader lukewarm and is in itself a big step towards the new order. Although it is mainly intended to biologists, this book can be fruitful to the general reader who is interested in evolution and the origin of life. There are somewhat technical developments, in either information theory or molecular biology, but they are few and can be skipped. An appendix dealing with information theory, a glossary and an index are provided to help the reader.

Quantitative analysis of the human genome, version 2.0

I found this book to be an important and valuable resource while researching a possible Ph.D. thesis topic on interactions of DNA with enzyme pathways. Having previously studied about 95% of the math and spent a month as a Visiting Scholar in the most mathematical of the genetics labs at Harvard Medical School, I feel pretty confident that I can recommend the first half of the book to those seeking to build or broaden their professional knowledge of applied mathematics in the biological and biomedical sciences or in bioengineering. Despite its obvious importance to calculating the information content of proteins, protein folding, and cell-to-cell signalling, information theory is rarely covered in the standard biomathematics texts at all. � I think Cambridge University Press ought to ask Yockey to add text material on traditional subjects like Lottka-Volterra population studies, Turing diffusion models, Hopfield networks, and the like. Also, the book needs more exercises, so it would be easier to use for teaching. And wouldn't it be great if it were packaged in Mathematica or MatLab form! � I wish I could say something intelligent about the applications to molecular biology in the second half of the book, but I don't think I've gotten enough biochemistry and molecular genetics yet. One thing's for sure, though, it's written clearly enough that any molecular biologist familiar with the state of the art ought to be able to gauge its worth pretty quickly. Yockey's math is so good it's pretty hard to imagine he flopped on the science. � Maybe some of my own work will arrive in the 2nd edition. I can hope, can't I?

This book is an absolute hidden treasure!!! It was published posthumously in 2012-the author died in 2010. Gai Eaton is a British man who converted to Islam in the 1950s- this book consists of essays about the fundamentals of Islamic beliefs, practices, and values most of which are taken from interviews given to the BBC radio in the 1980s and 1990s.

The book starts from the basics of the five pillars of Islam and moves on to concepts such as prayer, dhikr, beauty, the environment and animal welfare, the ethics of modern technology and war, contemplation, the role of worship, social activism, and more. The reflections are deep, sensitive, thought-provoking, and you will want to read and reflect on them again and again.

This book is also suitable for a non-Muslim reader interested in a very deep and spiritual explanation of Islamic beliefs and practices. I also envision a halaqah/book club using this book for those who wish to discuss something with a lot of spiritual and intellectual meat to it.

Despite the fact that these talks were delivered decades ago, they are still immediately relevant to the issues of our time and often read as if they were written this year.

A student-friendly textbook written by a classroom teacher

Rather than ask the question so many textbook publishers seem to when they prepare a new text ("How can we sell more textbooks?"), Pearson appears to have asked the more relevant "How can we help students really understand economics?" I do not work for Pearson, nor do I know anyone who does, but based on my experience with this book so far, here's what I can surmise about their process:

1. They begin by hiring high school teachers who teach high school students to write the text in a student-friendly way. Jason Welker maintains a website for his students at Zurich International School. His video lessons are among the clearest, and most concise, on the web. Sean Malley is also a high school Econ teacher in an international school. The text these two have produced is sophisticated but clear. We refer to it when the textbook my school uses doesn't make sense, and without fail, my students come away saying, "Oh. I get it now!" Thanks, Jason and Sean.

2. Next, they weave IB content into the fabric of the book. TOK applications, exam hints, and clearly stated learning outcomes that align with the 2013 IB syllabus are an integral part of this text, as are exam-based practice and review questions. If you are new to the IB, this book will make your life so easy, and will prepare your students quite well for the exam. That said, this book is not teaching to a test - it is teaching Economics, and will be useful to anyone outside the IB as well.

3. Finally, they poach people from That Company in Cupertino (1 Infinite Loop) to design the book. OK, that's just a hypothesis, but this book is slick. Comparing Econ texts to cars, most are about as exciting as a Model T, with a few ascending to the status of that masterpiece of Eastern Block engineering, the Lada. With this text, Pearson has given us a Mercedes AMG Roadster. It is not a Lada painted red to look relevant and contemporary, nor is it a nice, sensible Camry. This thing is solid and sexy and blows the doors off its competition. And it gets you where you're going in half the time, because you won't have to reread it three times to understand it. This book makes me want to get into it and use it. And the more I use it, the more I want to use it. Everything from its use of color to its physical layout, to the conceptual design of the chapters, even the bubbles-and-dots design that unifies the whole opus - this book was clearly not produced by Central Planning. As someone who will spend half a day trying to find just the right font for a publication, this book appeals to me. And if you're not into design, you won't be annoyed. It isn't gimmicky, it just works. The numerous graphs and graphics are useful and explanatory, and color is actually used to help illustrate concepts, not just to increase visual appeal (or justify the moniker "updated edition" and higher sticker price).

As a first-year IB Econ teacher at a well-established IB World School, I have had to do my share of homework to keep ahead of my students, and have had access to nearly all of the IB Econ texts and resources on the market. I am constantly turning to this one for its excellent explanations, examples, and ease of use. Furthermore, Pearson has online links to numerous resources, many of which appear to be reinventions of Mr. Welker's teaching materials (compare Pearson's worksheets to those found at Welker's website). These resources are not only useful, but free - even to those who don't own a copy of the text.

As a final endorsement, I offer the following anecdote. I provided a sample of this text to my students as we were learning about government intervention. They unanimously agreed the explanations and examples in the Pearson text are far superior to the two other texts we have used. They are begging me to purchase this book for them for the remainder of the course. Although the cost is nearly double that of other IB-oriented texts, the investment is well worth it.

Full of errors, absolutely awful.

The text of this book looks ok to begin with; there is a lot of 'sloppy' writing where interpretations are presented as fact, but the concepts are at least explained without glaring factual error. The standard of the writing is certainly IB/A-Level writing at best and absolutely no preparation for precise university studies, and some of the given examples are ludicrous (eg a movie sold on itunes to demonstrate the increasing MC on a supply curve: surely with a movie the cost is already made and there is no reason MC should rise with additional output through a medium such as itunes!) Sadly it looks as if the exercises with the answers at the back were farmed out to one of the writer's students (I hope). Numerous errors of mathematics and economics. At one point explaining subsidies, the explanatory diagram at the back shifts the supply curve in the OPPOSITE direction (ie inwards as in a tax). They then read the answer off the incorrect diagram (rather than doing the very simple algebra which would have confirmed their error). Then for the very next diagram explaining the next step of the process, they reverse the diagram to the correct position, but plug in the WRONG answer derived from the previous curve intersection. Result? On a graph where they have the right curve and the wrong numbers, they fiddle with the intersection points to make it look close to where it should be: they knew it was wrong but perhaps didn't know why or where, so just bluffed and hoped it would not be noticed. My attention was drawn to these types of errors a few pages earlier where they did almost the same thing, and I spent an hour re-running the maths because I couldn't work out where my answer must be wrong (I am experienced and competent at this but had to assume user error to begin with). After coming across the much more obvious errors a few pages later, I have no doubt that it is the book repeatedly in error. Earlier the book was describing total welfare using linear S/D curves, and saying that it should be calculated by working out the area of the triangle.. except on the X axis the numbers went 0,5,15,20,25 etc so it was in no way a triangle.

I purchased this (at a relatively hefty price) to study in detail for teaching purposes, and have to say that I have found it very poor. Numerous errors will just confuse students, and how this got past proof reading I cannot understand.

A good book, with a couple of minor problems.

I teach IB economics at an international school in SE Asia. When the new IB economics curriculum came out, I began looking at all of the available textbooks (oxford, cambridge, pearson, IBID, etc.)
After a thorough review of all of them, I find that this book is the best. The Dorton & Blink isn't a very compelling read and has huge gaps (areas of the IB syllabus that simply aren't covered in the 2nd ed.), Tragakes has written a good book, but can be a little dry at times, and IBID / Matt McGee recently came out with another IB economics book (I haven't seen the latest edition. The 2nd edition was great for high ability english learners and was probably the most intellectually engaging, but was really text heavy (few pictures, and makes use of only 2 colors)).
Welker has created a textbook that is both engaging and readable. Last year I piloted several textbooks with the students. After the trying many of the books above it was clear that the students preferred it as well. There is one problem with the macro-diagrams in section 2 (but one can find ways to teach around it).
