Explaining a Lot with a Little: Trade and Domestic Politics

Peter Gourevitch ended his famous 1978 "Second Image Reversed" article with a call for analysts to conduct more work on how the international system affects domestic political coalitions and their struggle for power. Perhaps the most important work that arose out of Gourevitch's call to coalition analysis was Rogowski's "Commerce and Coalitions" (1989), which parsimoniously and elegantly engaged both the second-image reversed literature and the literature on domestic coalitions.
Rogowski responds to work that had previously looked at domestic coalition (cleavage) formation, without considering international trade, such as Lipset and Rokkan (1967) and Moore (1967). In line with the second-image reversed argument, Rogowski instead uses the Stolper-Samuelson theorem to explain domestic cleavages. Briefly, the S-S theorem says that trade will benefit the abundant factor(s) (land, labor and/or capital) in each country, and harm the scarce factor(s). Rogowski draws a political implication from this theorem, which is that the benefited group will gain more political power by way of economic leverage and strategic incentives. More specifically, Rogowski's model can predict either an urban-rural conflict or a class conflict. In the first case, land is the abundant factor which would benefit. Capital and labor, normally based in an urban environment, are scarce and would go on the defensive. In the latter case, the economy is endowed in labor, and capital and land are scarce, thus leading to an assertive coalition of landowners and capitalists.
But there are two key problems with this type of second-image reversed coalition analysis. The first is that outcomes are under-specified and ambiguous, and the second is that process-tracing is nearly absent.
For Rogowski, outcomes are in fact blatantly under-specified, because Rogowski does not actually predict outcomes! He admits as much when he writes that "winners can expand their political influence" (4 - note the hedging by the use of the term "can" instead of "will"), and "as the desire and the means for a particular political preference increase, the likelihood grows that political entrepreneurs will devise mechanisms that can surmount the obstacles to collective action" (5). Not only are we faced with this ambiguous, probabilistic argument, but we are also told that those harmed by free trade will demand "protection or imperialism" (5), but we are not told which one, and under what circumstances. Further, Rogowski admits that "winners" who are strengthened politically might still lose, without telling us cases or conditions under which they would do so. "Victory or defeat depends, so far as I can see, both on the relative size of the various groups and on those institutional and cultural factors that this perspective so resolutely ignores" (20).
Process-tracing is also absent from Rogowski's analysis, because there is little empirical evidence of his hypothesized effects at work. In effect, a coalition's capture of the state is a "black box", in that we don't know how exactly how it happens. First of all, some countries might depend only marginally on trade, which he admits. Second, when Rogowski does get into empirical cases, he begins to introduce elements that are not found in the original hypothesis, such as degree of skill of labor, and how "advanced" certain economic sectors are. And finally, he ignores the role of information and strategy, in that holders of factors need to be able to know their opportunity costs and incentives, calculate the best course of action, and resolve collective action problems in taking this action. The book says almost nothing about these problems.
However, Rogowski's theory, while it under-predicts and fails to process-trace, can probably be forgiven because of its incredible degree of parsimony and explanatory leverage. With a simple model of international trade, he is able to shed causal light on a multitude of historical cases of domestic political change.

Informative manual for navigating a fulfilling career on Wall Street.

Geoff Blades worked on Wall Street for a long while, eventually making his way up the chain to become a VP at Goldman Sachs. After living through the negative effects of two major economic downturns, though, he began to question what he wanted from life. Eventually he quit his job and, after many years of reading and research, he became a career coach. Do What You Want on Wall Street is essentially a comprehensive manual for developing your career, and Blades's main point is that you have to be intentional about your choices from the start. You need to define what you want in your career, develop a process for getting it, and then build yourself into the person who can achieve it. He offers a five-step system for accomplishing this.

Some of the tips I appreciated most from this book:

(*) You don't need to know exactly what you want from your job at first; you just need to know the general direction you want to go.
(*) Spend 10 minutes telling yourself the story of your life every morning--where you are going and how you are going to get where you want to go.
(*) Know the "character" of who you need to be to get what you want out of meeting, negotiation, or other interaction.
(*) Commit to the path in front of you, but always be considering your options.
(*) In other words, don't wait for change to happen to you. Always be on the offensive, looking for ways to move and advance in your career.
(*) Always be developing your SELF. Read, meditate, grow.

And there is so much more information and advice in here. Most of it is insightful and helpful, and I think people currently working (or planning on working) on Wall Street sill benefit from reading it.

I will say, though, that the book can be exhausting in its comprehensiveness. There are principles within principles within steps within chapters. It goes on and on. The information is organized, yes, but there are so many sub-points (even within sub-points) that it can be hard to follow and absorb. The planning and executing sections (Steps 3 and 4 in Blades's five-step system) are insanely detailed and dense. For those two sections, especially, you really have to go slowly, take notes, and reread.

Certainly, needing to study a book is not a negative thing in and of itself! But I still maintain that the presentation would have been stronger, overall, if Blades had trimmed down his ideas a little. Instead of including every single bit of career advice that he gives his clients, Blades could have argued a few really strong, really clear points (and perhaps saved the rest for later books). At the very least, I would have appreciated being given the option to dig deeper or stay light (like, for example, how What Color Is Your Parachute puts the extensive personality/career test at the very end of the book, as an optional exercise to complete or not).

Regardless, there is no denying that Blades makes good points and offers helpful advice. I think most will find this book helpful. I definitely learned a lot.

Life Changing!

Awesome. Having read hundreds of 'success' and self-help books, I expected more fluffy, feel-good, useless ideas. I got it anyway because of the Wall Street twist, and I'll never be the same. Geoff lays out an actionable, step-by-step repeatable system for getting exactly what you want out of Wall Street, any career, your family and your life. Geoff's direct, no-holds-bared, "this is what it is" style cuts thru the BS that typically buries the idea of self-help.

I'll never buy another Success book because after over 20 years, I found what I've been searching for. Instead of wasting my time sifting thru more fluffy self-help crap, I'm going to implement his process and start consciously directing my life, to make it exactly what I want it to be. No more compromise, no more suffering to survive, no more wandering aimlessly day to day, no more powerless wishing my life would get better. I am genuinely convinced that this is going to change my life.

Thanks Geoff. You're the Real Deal and so is this book. To My Success! Here I Go!!

I don’t work on Wall Street, but I found this book very helpful in thinking through my career.

Even though I thought I was clear on what I wanted for my business, this book forced me to step back and get clear on where I was headed and how I imagined I would get there.

Then, as I worked through, it gave me a clear and actionable steps I could take to keep building my business over time.

I should say, this book is not a casual read. Geoff challenges you every step of the way to keep dreaming of what you want and to every day take the actions to keep building it, and I don’t think you will get much value from just reading it once and then putting it away.

I will also say, if you don’t work on Wall Street there are a lot of ideas that are not relevant, and I would get even more benefit if it related to all careers.

Will prepare you for GMAT Verbal

Before I purchased this book I was regularly scoring in the low 30's on practice tests for the GMAT. I have always been more comfortable with science and math subjects and never cared much for composition type classes. Working through this book is absolutely the reason I was able to score a 40 on the actual test. The book is laid out in a systematic order and has plenty of mini quizzes that help you test what you are learning to make sure you grasp the concepts. It is a big book and very well made. I highly recommend this for your GMAT prep.

Great content, but limited use with Kindle Edition

Quick review. I've read through 4 chapters only so I can't comment on the entire book. So far I'm glad I purchased the book. Manhattan GMAT books are great. I have all of the strategy guides (paperback) and went ahead and got the Verbal and Math foundations as Kindle Editions. Overall the Verbal foundations does what it says. It goes back to the basics as a previous reviewer wrote. It's a great refresher for me so I don't mind that. Furthermore there are some great tips in the book that I find are very helpful. Now another reviewer said that you need other books as well, and I think it's fair to say but I believe that regardless of what GMAT book you're going to end up purchasing more than 1 book.

Now comes the annoying part of the kindle editions. There are drills throughout the GMAT Verbal foundations book that ask the reader to for example analyze the parts of a sentence that are underlined. In the kindle edition, nothing is underlined!!! I thought well maybe it might be different on a kindle reader versus a kindle app. It's the same thing. If this will annoy you as it does me, spend the extra money and get the paperback.

This is one thorough book !!

I am preparing for the GMAT and I thought it would be a great idea to go back to the basics and this does exactly what it sets out to do. I bought the Kindle edition to read but I would probably recommend buying the paper version. The Kindle version ha some strange alignment issues although it doesn't affect the ultimate material. This is a book I intend to go back to before the actual test and I think it will be a great use of anyone's time to read.
