When he was four years old, Asgedom's family left their war-ravaged home in Ethiopia. They spent three years in a Sudanese refugee camp before coming to the U.S. in 1983, where they were settled by World Relief in a wealthy white suburb near Chicago. He later earned a full scholarship to Harvard, where in 1999 he delivered the commencement address. His simple lyrical narrative, both wry and tender, stays true to the child's viewpoint as he grows up, taunted at school, but pretty bad and rough himself. His coming-of-age story is both darkened and enriched by the stories he hears about his parents' lives back home and by the pieces he remembers. At the center of the book is his father, a fierce family disciplinarian, once an all-powerful medical assistant at home, now reduced to a "beetle," unemployed, half-blind, raging at his dependency. Only at the very end, when Asgedom spells out the metaphor of the title, does the message overwhelm the story. What stays with you is the quiet, honest drama of a family's heartrending journey. The Power of Positivity...

This is a remarkable true story of a journey that has led a man from Ethiopea, to the refugee camps in Sudan to Chicago. He is a Harvard graduate, resides in Illinois and uses his experiences to help other people (particularly educators and students) realize their potential through positive thinking and living. His early years in the Sudan are reminiscent to me of what my kids experienced in Ghana, and he was about their age when he came to the U.S.. However, his experience once here was very different. I'm looking forward to meeting this author next month.

This is the Season

I've been reviewing books for several years now and I am sorry to say this is the first review that I've had to change my rating on. Although I found a lot of interesting information in this book I've since learned that the author Mr. Tramm has been writing multiple reviews of his own books using aliases. This type of behavior violates the rules, undermines the review and voting process and misleads those looking for honest reviews of these books.

a very powerful and eye opening read

This book is the book to read, especially for the times that we are in at the moment. Reading this book, will open your eyes and make everything more clear, about how we can know the time frame when Christ will return, based on prophecy that has already been fulfulled and the few left to be fulfulled. God has a time and season for everything, it is all mapped out in the Bible and this book brings to life Gods magnificent plan from beginning to end. I have learned so much from reading this and in reading this, you will see things and think about things you have not yet given thought to. A must Read!

The author successfully takes the reader on a fascinating journey in an attempt to determine the Second Coming of Christ by linking an array of information from Biblical scripture, sabbatical cycles, Sir Isaac Newton's assessments, the Feasts of the Lord, celestial events, and ancient civilizations resulting in a convincing and compelling timeline. Not only is the reader is left to ponder the author's research and ultimate conclusion but also to evaluate an emerging undertone of good versus evil found in mainstream cultural phenomenon such as the New Age Movement and UFO sightings which may have a deeper and more sinister agenda tied into ancient mysteries. An incredible, informative read.

YOU HAVEN'T MET AUSTRALIA TILL YOU'VE MET THIS

The old hero-story, thoughtfully retold, is always nourishing to read, but Wrightson offers us more: a first-class hero-cycle that is deeply, soul-quickeningly Australian. Wirrun is a young mid-20th-century Aboriginal man advancing to apotheosis (indeed) through encounter not only with the Aboriginal peoples of the "old south land" but also with the spirits who are themselves the land's oldest dreamings. Till I met them in Wrightson (a white Australian woman) these out-breathings of Australian presence were hidden to me. If bringing them forward in fiction like this involved a measure of cultural risk (I'm waiting on a ruling on that from the Aboriginal mate I bought this copy for), I, for one, can only be grateful. Profoundly respectful of the people whose lore constitutes so much of her material, she also loves them -- and shows it by enrolling Wirrun as a first-class member of that mighty, immemorial and global company that "climbs the rugged track to hero" on behalf of all of us, Australian or not, Aboriginal or not, man and woman alike.
