Intuitively insightful

Although I enjoyed Watts' scholarly analysis and excellent writing, he went a little too far in his vindication of 'Eastern' values and indictment of 'Western' values. I would give the reader two points on which I disagree with Watts. First, it's ill-advised to conceive of an 'Eastern' philosophy. It's nothing more than a category to put things in. The same is true of 'Western' philosophy. To see this, read a few verses attributed to the ancient Greek philosopher Heraclitus or the Yankee mystic Emerson, especially his essays titled 'Circles' and 'The Over-Soul'. You'll find that these 'Western' philosophers have some very 'Eastern' ideas. I expected Watts to explain this to the reader so that they understood that 'Eastern' and 'Western' are just arbitrary, albeit useful categories that shouldn't be taken too seriously.

Second, Eastern and Western civilization are not as different as he suggests. For example, although some Chinese characters seem more natural than the Latin alphabet, the Chinese written language has become nearly as abstract as the Latin alphabet. Watts' insinuation that Chinese language more accurately conveys reality is a bit of a stretch, as is his idea that Eastern civilization is less neurotic than Western civilization. A quick reading of Chinese history reveals that Chinese encountered the same tendency to 'order the world' as their European and Ottoman counterparts.

Those two points aside, Watts delivers an excellent introduction to Taoism. I should mention the caveat that 'Taoism' is not really a system of thought like Confucianism, but a useful category to put related ideas into. Chuang Tzu did not think of himself as a disciple of Lao Tzu; Han historians falsely (or accurately?) envisioned them as belonging to a single stream of thought like Legalism or Confucianism. On a related note, Watts gives a well-thought description of the Tao on pg. 55:

"But if, as is the case, the Tao is simply inconceivable, what is the use of having the word and of saying anything at all about it? Simply because we know intuitively that there is a dimension of ourselves and of nature which eludes us because it is too close, too general, and too all-embracing to be singled out as a particular object."

This is the essence of the philosophy, and he goes on in the long paragraph to further explain it. Not unlike the scientific concept of electricity, the Tao is not a thing at all, but a certain dimension that we cannot quite explain (the word 'dimension' doesn't do it justice). In that way, the Tao is no more mystical than science. Watts includes a passage from a scientist writing about electricity and correctly calls it 'pure metaphysics'. Empirical experiments only give us snippets of observed reality, which is different from reality itself, for the very observation of a thing changes it. The Tao underlies this reality, and is not observable. But it doesn't matter if we have an incomplete and inaccurate view of the cosmos since we need only 'go with the flow' and understand that the nature of reality is unknowable. This leads to a more tolerant, less anxious existence in the modern world.

Watts does an incredible job explaining difficult concepts to his readers. Watts will give you an intuitive understanding of the concepts of action through inaction and te (virtue/virtuality). I may disagree with how he views Eastern and Western society (or societies, as he would put it), but he has achieved something with this small volume that few others could hope to match. At the end of the book I was left curious and wanting more, knowing that this unfinished book was his last; could you ask for more?

Watts does it again

Alan Watts is a true master of bringing the Eastern thought into the Western sphere of thinking. Much like "Spirit of Zen", Watts uses his wording and expressions, as well as citing sources from the tradition, to gently introduce Taoism to one unfamiliar with the philosophy/religion/lifestyle. With beautiful Chinese calligraphy, history, and philosophy, Watts skillfully expresses the mystical and natural way of the Tao.
While it is truly impossible to describe what is beyond description, beyond thought or concepts ("The Dao that can be spoked of is not the true Tao.. from the Tao te Ching), Watts does a fine job.

Read Derrida and read this dictionary

The previous reviewer seems not to have read Derrida. This dictionary is actually quite wonderful. It describes, dances, inverts, re-inscribes and gathers in ways that are very much of the same spirit and practices of Derrida's own writing and writings. If you want something useful as an invitation/introduction to Derrida, at least through a certain period, this is a fantastic book.

Redundant, annoyingly clever, too hip for its own good

First, read the effusive praises by Kamuf and Caputo-- theirs are located right below the book title. If that's enough for you, by all means buy the book. Obviously, I see things a bit differently.

Once something becomes big enough, popular enough (and in poor Derrida's case, solely by reputation of sheer impenetrability it would seem!!) to warrant a dictionary, it has probably already been abducted by, or inducted into, or infiltrated by the forces of, the Dark Side. 'Vaderized'.

This ain't your dad's dictionary. And that's not necessarily good news -- unless you are one of those super unconventional, artistically groovy people who understand that an understanding of anything only comes from the thing's textually deconstructed action in some sooon-to-be-decon'd context by way of some disavowed third thing. So, no definitions here. See Caputo's praise above.

Alrighty then. I'll tell you what, let me just take a sample. Here is an "entry" under 'W' on WRITING:

"As I start this sentence I am not absolutely sure how it will end. The only way I could have known exactly where I was going with that sentence (or any sentence) would be if I had a crystal ball, if somehow I could see into the future. Since I don't believe in clairvoyance, I don't believe anyone can see what hasn't happened yet. And every time anyone sits down to write a sentence (or to compose one mentally), the end remains to come; whatever 'happens' happens later, even if the interval between the beginning and the end lasts only for a split second."

Jee~~Zuss.

The entire book is more or less like this, with certain words -- that Derrida used often, such as EVENT, PRESENCE, IDENTITY, etc -- printed in BOLD (again, with no definition) so you can "trace" the word and cross reference the same in some other... con-text, that is.
Or,if you like, CON T ex(i)T.

If all this sounds good to you, by all means get it.
Personally, when I buy something I expect the thing to be what it claims to be. In this case, this thing claims to be a dictionary. But it's something else... something entirely unpalatable.
Well, I don't know about you, but I don't particularly relish the "radical" idea that a box of cereal could just as easily turn out to be a rectilinearly rigid sack of dried sh_it.

I am just glad dentists don't (mis)read Derrida. "By ROOT CANAL, we mean the bite marks you left on your toast this morning so we can (dis)locate the KHORA of MAN-dibular mastication by which your tongue re-enacts the geometry of speech without actually speaking."

Excessively hip people who love books like this, seem to thrive on some very bad misconstrual of Derrida's notion of HOSPITALITY -- they allow themselves so generously to put out bad books, and abuse good Jacques' name AND hospitality. Poor Jacky.

A Great Work BUT!

This is a fantastic piece of work by Jancis and her team, long awaited by me here in Hong Kong. I went for buying through the US amazon website. Here is the big BUT. Terrible printing and publishing. For a book of this price USD 120 by the time it got to me, the quality of the production of the book leaves a lot to be desired. Print is difficult to read due to poor black and white contrast. For anybody with eyesight issues I strongly advise you do not buy it. Many org charts (now available to download in Purple Pages website - thank you Jancis) are hidden the the spine of the book and hence not legible. What a shame. Hopefully the UK published version is better. As a book of reference I think it will go down in history as definitive but I would wait in the hope the publishers get their act together for future print runs. I would have given this 5 stars but ......

Magnificent but imperfect

For years I've loved Jancis Robinson's pocket-sized Guide to Wine Grapes, turning to it whenever I encounter a new wine grape. Alas, it is long out of print, and a bit dated in terms of the relationships between grapes.

Now comes this new volume, which is anything but pocket-sized. Massive and slip-cased, it has the gravitas of an aged Premier Cru. For each of nearly 1400 varieties there is an entry that gives you its color (from among five choices), common synonyms (for some widely grown grapes there are many), other varieties it is often mistaken for, and what is known of its origins and heritage (relying on recent, extensive, DNA testing of wine grapes). Then there is a brief summary of how it grows (vigor, resistance, when it ripens, and the like) and where it grows. As warranted, there is a discussion of what it tastes like and the quality of the wine it produces. Many of these grapes are actually very marginal from a wine making viewpoint, and are of interest for historical or relationship reasons. (I do miss the little sliding bar from the earlier book that suggested at a glance the likelihood of the grape producing a decent wine.)

The relationship information is fascinating. Selected grapes have a family tree associated with their entry. Looking at Cabernet Sauvignon we learn that Chenin Blanc is a sister of Sauvignon Blanc and, hence, an aunt of Cabernet Sauvignon. Freisa turns out to be a cross of Nebbiolo with an unknown grape. The foldout genealogy of Pinot Noir is remarkable. Who would have guessed that Lagrein is a granddaughter of Pinot, while Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah are both great granddaughters? On a down side, the figure is sewn so deeply into the binding that part of the tree can't be read.

I decided to check on a grape of local (but not wine drinking!) interest. In the earlier book there is an entry for the Mission grape, the first wine grape brought to California; there is was associated with the Monica grape. The current volume doesn't have an entry for Mission (it has entries pointing you to a main entry for some synonyms, but not for others). Checking the index it turns out that Mission is actually Listan Prieto. (Which I'd certainly never heard of before.)

There are also beautiful color plates, originally published in France over a century ago, of selected grapes. (Interestingly, one is labeled "Mission"!)

But there are, alas, some imperfections. I've mentioned how the Pinot family tree is bound so that it is not all readable. While the paper in a volume this size is necessarily thin, the see-through on some pages is annoying; more opaque paper would have been nice. The label on the front of the slip case is somewhat crooked, and the one on the edge quite so. Production quality could have been better.

Had this been a standard book at half or even two-thirds the price it would have been an easy five stars. But in a slip-cased book at this list price you expect a little better attention to detail than this book manages. So I reluctantly drop my rating to four stars. Still an excellent investment for or gift to a devoted oenophile, it is not quite the value it could have been with a little better physical execution.

Wine Grapes: A Complete Guide to 1,368 Vine Varieties Excellent Content, Unprofessional Production

I don't work in the wine industry but my daughter does and I purchased this book as a gift for her. It's a standard text and it seems quite comprehensive. Why the bad rating? It is very poorly designed and produced. The book includes fold outs with part of their graphics bound deep into the gutter of the book making them unreadable. No excuse for this since there is at least 1" of unprinted area along the left margin of the foldout. A better book designer should have picked this flaw up and avoided it. It should have been a two volume publication. That would have eliminated so much of the graphics and text readability problems. Yes, two volumes would cost more than one; but this is a reference text that one keeps and the additional expense would be well worth it.
We're going to try writing to the publisher to see if we can get separate sheets of the full fold outs. After all, I paid for them.
This seems to be a very good reference that one would keep throughout a career in wine. No point in cheaping out on the book design and publication.

Antoinette went to college and became a professional nurse and practiced nursing for twelve years while raising two children. In 1996 she met the subject of her book, Andre Coppage and decided to write and publish this work.

Writing this tragic dramatic true story affected her life. She is in the process of starting a non-profit organization directed at the victims of gang violence. Andre Coppage is signed as the national spokesperson in this organization, he speaks out against gang violence. Ann Lee says, "There is nothing on earth greater that our children."

I got a chance to see Andre on Sally. After hearing his story my heart went out to him but I was angry with his mother. I changed my mind when I read the book and heard the whole story. Congratulations to your Mom on her recovery. I'm glad you two stuck together.It really makes us stop and think about the decisions we make in life. Someone else is always affected by them. It is hard to belive that children can be so heartless. Andre you need to take your story to every city, school and jail in the country. I hope you recieve the funding to do it. This is a project many as well as myself would have no problem helping to support.
I am sorry for your tragedy but please do not blame yourself. I pray that the peace of God will rest upon you and your family. And I pray that you live a joyful and fulfilled life until time to meet your loved ones again in a better place. Thank you for sharing your story and I'm sorry for your pain.

The Best Story Ever Written

First of all i would like to give my sympathy to my cousin andre and the family because it was the most hard thing to hear about my little cousin's and it is still hard to think about the tragedy and how it happened andre you keep your head up and stay strong because they are watching you from heaven i would like to thank you too because now the whole world can see how dangerous gangs really is and how they don't have a specific person who they are going to target and how it affects the whole family so thank you very much and let god keep you strong and lead you through your journey in life.

I thought this book was excellent. It gives alot of details on the violent life that gang members live. It also tells a tender story of family love, forgiveness and perserverence to go on. This is an excellent book for anyone working with youth to read.

Fantastic, Extraordinary

The book "I AM THIRD" written by Gale Sayers is the best autobiography I have ever read. This book is compassionate, emotional, and sometimes comic. It tells the story of a man with such love for a sport when a knee injury almost destroys his career and all the friends he didn't even know he had. One letter a boy wrote really touched Gale emotionally. Linda, Gale's wife, gives Gale all the support a wife could. In 1970 Gale was named the Most Courageous Player of the Year. This book also talks about the friendship between Gale Sayers and Brian Piccilo, both famous players for the Chicago Bears. Gale Sayers was a "great running back on the field and a great friend off the field" says Brian. The story includes the importance of faith in Gale Sayer's life. He concludes "The lord is first, my friends are second, and I am third." I recommend this book for any young football player who has BIG dreams.

I read this book thirty years ago and still remember it.

I have read a lot of books and I still remember, after thirty years, lines from this great book. The best of all is "God is 1st, Others are second, I am Third", the way God intended it to be. I don't believe I will ever forget how it has touched my life in many ways and many times. This is among the greatest of all books. I rate it up there with the best, after the Bible, of course. This book shows how two people can be the best of friends, even in the worst of times; no matter what the color of your skin or how different your personality may be.

A Story of an Unbelievable Friendship

I came across this book by watching one of my all-time favorite movies, which is based on this book: "Brian's Song". Gayle Sayers and Brian Picolo had a wonderful and humorous friendship. Their differences (skin color) were not a problem for them. In fact, they made jokes about themselves and their differences. This book is a very inspirational story for anyone to read. You do not have to be a football fan, just someone's friend, to enjoy this book.

This one is going on my top shelf!

Wow! I keep nodding my head as I read this book. This author is really good. His writing is fluid, entertaining, and concise. Believe me, I can be such a cut throat critic (read my reviews). What I like most about this book is that it actually lived up to its big title. I am not the same person 15 minutes ago. For the first time, I LEARNED A LOT from a tiny, short book. Amazing.

If looking for ideas on to make your life better this is a good quick read. The author gets to his points quickly without all the other nonsense of other books. I disagree with the previous review that you have to think the authors way or else. He simply presented his belief and what worked for him. What you take away from that is up to you. It just presents a different way of thinking that can have a positive effect on your life. Does it really work? We'll see...but you'll never know unless you try it for yourself. Nothing is absolute..but his ideas do have merit.

Gave this book to my dyslexic god-son, he loves it! He has problems creating mental pictures from written words and this has helped him tremendously. The best part is that he was so excited about reading that he blasted through a quarter of the book the same day I gave it to him, a huge feat for him. Hopefully this will help my godson to improve his reading capabilities.

This is book #2 in the middle school series . Arrived in perfect condition well made my son has already read this book and you can see it looks brand new . It's been stuffed in a locker , back pack . You get the idea . I highly recommend this book for all middle school age children the main focus in the book is on a boy but I have read throw them all myself and a girl would enjoy it as well . There are 7 books in the whole series
