Great thought provoking book for Entrepreneurs!

Justin's books are great for work from home, do it yourself, kind of people. You don't have to be a genious to understand or benefit from what he says, and you don't need a college degree. It's down to earth yet very thought provoking. I would recommend you read it here and there, maybe a chapter a day kind of thing. Just enough to get your mind going and motivated. When that brain juice turns on, put the book down and get to work! Then when you're feeling a bit slow again, pick it up!

Mr. Ledvina has done it again. He's written a well researched book that is not like anything else you have read. This is not a 'how to succeed in business' book. It is a 'How to keep from FAILING book'.

If you are looking for comfortable words and coddling, keep looking. If you are looking for the harsh realities of being in business for yourself, you NEED this book. He tells you things that nobody else bothers to say.

This is a book written by an entrepreneur that has plainly been through the wars. It is not a theoretical treatise, it is nuts and bolts reality.

If you are in business for yourself, if you are thinking about ‘going your own way’ or if the thought has even crossed your mind that maybe you might want to try it some day, this is the very best money you can spend. Buy this book. Steal it if you have to, but read it.

He Did It Again!! But Better!!

Justin Ledvina has done it again... his literary skills, promised by earlier books, have come to fruition in this one. While earlier books occupy a place on honor in my bookcase, this one will remain by my computer as a reference book... So many "successful" people have written "how-to" books but all you read is the success part... you never read the struggles, the problems or how they were resolved and solved!! Justin has an easy to read style, like you are sitting down with the author, not like he is preaching to you from a stage. If you want to be successful, like Justin has been, you need to give some serious reading to this book... it is time well-spent!! PS... check out his acknowledgements at the beginning... when you hear who he values in his life, you know he "walks the walk"!!

About the Author
Schalom Ben-Chorin (1913-1999) wrote some thirty books on Jewish historical and cultural themes, of which Brother Jesus was his acknowledged favorite. German-born and -educated, Ben-Chorin emigrated to Jerusalem in 1935, where he spent the remainder of his life. In the aftermath of World War II, he worked tirelessly to repair relations between Jews and Germans and between Christians and Jews. His many awards include the Buber-Rosenzweig Medal and the Leo Baeck Prize. Jared S. Klein is a professor of linguistics, classics, and Germanic and Slavic languages at the University of Georgia. Max Reinhart is a professor of German and head of the Department of Germanic and Slavic Languages at the University of Georgia.

All good stories leave questions...

Usman Malik weaves a narrative, much like a character in this story, of light wrapped within a mystery. Light that blinds when one refuses to face their fear. Light that burns, as childhood fairy tales scorch away preconceptions and leaves one choking on the ashes. And finally, light that illuminates, as one discovers what is really important.

The story focuses on Salman, a Pakistani professor who, upon his grandfather’s death, becomes obsessed with his grandfather’s tale about a princess and jinn. All of his life, this story was the one thread that led back to his grandfather, the one thing he could still cherish from childhood. After studying his grandfather’s notes, Salman realizes there was so much the old man didn’t tell him. Details his grandfather shouldn’t know, things implied but left unsaid concerning the princess and the jinn. Impossible things.

The mystery eats at the core of Salman’s being since it might answer deeper questions about himself. Does he really love the woman he is with? Is he really ashamed of his family—former immigrants who remind him of what he wanted to leave behind when he went to college? Was there truly a jinn under the princess’s eucalyptus tree—and did his grandfather find it?

Risking it all, Salman travels to Lahore where his grandfather once lived. More than a mere journey seeking answers, it is a quest for Salman to finally discover himself once and for all. He wanders down streets he once imagined as a boy, now made stark by realities he never dreamed. A dream woven into an eternal tapestry that reveals the memory of heaven.

Journey with me to the Middle East, where magic still lives.

This was a magical tale. In the telling, it went on a little bit long, but in retrospect the journey it was telling wasn't quite the one that I had imagined it spinning. And in the end, whose fault is that? We learn of the protagonist's Gramps, and the life he used to lead, when as a boy he met a princess and a jinn (or so he says), and discovered magic far beyond what most people in our world ever encounter, and what ramifications that has on his life and his family. The story was well told and sucked me in, almost start to finish. It had a few rough edges that could have been sanded down, where we jump through different sets of memories and times, but was a good way to pass the time, and a world and place that I do not often visit.

Good information for advanced industrial electrician, or engineer.

Generally good technical information. A bit of emphasis on "older style" electromechanical relays used for power system protection, but the principles are universal, and still apply to modern numerical relays. A very good choice for anyone who works "in the field."

I would certainly buy it again.

About the Author
Martin Gardner was a renowned author who published over 70 books on subjects from science and math to poetry and religion. He also had a lifelong passion for magic tricks and puzzles. Well known for his mathematical games column in Scientific American and his "Trick of the Month" in Physics Teacher magazine, Gardner attracted a loyal following with his intelligence, wit, and imagination.

Martin Gardner: A Remembrance
The worldwide mathematical community was saddened by the death of Martin Gardner on May 22, 2010. Martin was 95 years old when he died, and had written 70 or 80 books during his long lifetime as an author. Martin's first Dover books were published in 1956 and 1957: Mathematics, Magic and Mystery, one of the first popular books on the intellectual excitement of mathematics to reach a wide audience, and Fads and Fallacies in the Name of Science, certainly one of the first popular books to cast a devastatingly skeptical eye on the claims of pseudoscience and the many guises in which the modern world has given rise to it. Both of these pioneering books are still in print with Dover today along with more than a dozen other titles of Martin's books. They run the gamut from his elementary Codes, Ciphers and Secret Writing, which has been enjoyed by generations of younger readers since the 1980s, to the more demanding The New Ambidextrous Universe: Symmetry and Asymmetry from Mirror Reflections to Superstrings, which Dover published in its final revised form in 2005.

To those of us who have been associated with Dover for a long time, however, Martin was more than an author, albeit a remarkably popular and successful one. As a member of the small group of long-time advisors and consultants, which included NYU's Morris Kline in mathematics, Harvard's I. Bernard Cohen in the history of science, and MIT's J. P. Den Hartog in engineering, Martin's advice and editorial suggestions in the formative 1950s helped to define the Dover publishing program and give it the point of view which — despite many changes, new directions, and the consequences of evolution — continues to be operative today.

excellent but getting out of date

This is a wonderful, nonmathematical introduction to special and general relativity. Gardner is a talented popularizer, and the two-color illustrations help make this an enjoyable book to read. My only misgiving is that the book is getting out of date on many topics. Ch. 1-6 are fine, but ch. 7, Tests of Relativity, is sorely in need of updating, and ch. 10-12, on cosmology, predate the recent revolution that has made cosmology a high-precision science and revealed that the universe is even stranger than we thought. I would like to see Gardner hand off this book to another writer who can produce a new, up to date edition.

A great book to start with.

If you are looking for a comprehensive book to understand the nuances of Relativity theory, this isn't for you. However, if you are not mathematically inclined, or don't wish to dive into the math or physics just yet, this is a excellent choice.
This was the first book that I read on the subject of Einstein's theory. I found it entertaining and actually fun to read. I have not read any of Gardner's other books, but his writing style in this one makes for an easy read. It does not feel like you are reading much of a physics books at all.
Furthermore, the illustrations not only are well done, but they make it easier to understand the principles being explained.
If you are looking to know the basics of this theory, this is best book to own. Simple to read, good explanations, uncomplicated. If you are looking for more depth, than you will certainly move on to another book after this, but this is an excellent one to start with.

Best introduction to relativity

I recently read a handful of books on relativity, and I rank them as follows:

Highly recommended introductory works:
* Relativity Simply Explained by Martin Gardner -- best introductory book.
* The Elegant Universe (chapters 2 & 3) by Brian Greene -- extremely lucid, but not as in-depth as Gardner's book -- possibly the best if you want a shorter introduction.
* Einstein by Walter Isaacson, chapter 6 (special relativity) & chapter 9 (general relativity) -- not just a great biography, also a very lucid explanation of Einstein's ideas.
* The Fabric of the Cosmos (chapters 2 & 3) by Brian Greene -- a discussion of general relativity & the nature of spacetime.

Further reading:
* Inside Relativity by Mook & Vargish -- great introduction to Newton, along with great sections on what high-speed objects look like and a great section on how Maxwell's equations of electromagnetism relate to relativity.
* Relativity Visualized by Lewis Carroll Epstein -- a good additional book to read, if you want to delve more into truly understanding how it works. Not recommended as an introduction.
* Relativity: A Very Short Introduction by Russell Stannard -- might be a good introduction, but not as lucid as some of the books above.
* Relativity by Albert Einstein -- not recommended. It's great if you want to see how Einstein explained it, but it is generally not a good introduction. Cumbersome, difficult, and boring.

Relative to the books above, Gardner's book gives the best history of the developments leading up to the theory of relativity. It gives numerous examples of the principle of relativity, which helps the reader ease into thinking in relative terms. It mentions a thought experiment about relativity by Poincare and a short story about relative changes by HG Wells. So it gives you a sense of what was going on prior to Einstein. None of the other books listed did that, or not as effectively.

It provides a history of ether and the efforts to preserve the concept of ether (which leads into the development of the theory of relativity). None of the other books listed did that. I found all of the pre-history to be essential to truly understanding relativity.

It does a great job explaining relativity in a lucid, straightforward manner with numerous examples. I think he explained the equivalence principle, which led to general relativity, better than any of the books above.

A reader could reasonably skip chapters 10-12 (on cosmology), which are out of date and which are likely covered better elsewhere. They still make interesting reading, especially the chapter on the shape of the universe, but they are not essential to understanding relativity.

This book is not perfect, and there are probably concepts that for some readers are better explained in other books. But, relative to the books listed above, I found it to be the best introductory book. Anyone interested in truly understanding relativity will likely want to read several books, in order to view it from multiple frames of reference.

If you'd like larger print and/or hardcover, the first edition of this book is just as good -- Relativity for the Million. My only complaint about Relativity Simply Explained is that the text is a little small.

Lafayette Park, an affordable middle-class residential area in downtown Detroit, is home to the largest collection of buildings designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe in the world. Today, it is one of Detroit’s most racially integrated and economically stable neighborhoods, although it is surrounded by evidence of a city in financial distress. Through interviews with and essays by residents; reproductions of archival material; and new photographs by Karin Jobst, Vasco Roma, and Corine Vermeulen, and previously unpublished photographs by documentary filmmaker Janine Debanné, Thanks for the View, Mr. Mies examines the way that Lafayette Park residents confront and interact with this unique modernist environment. Lafayette Park has not received the level of international attention that other similar projects by Mies have. This may be due in part to its location in Detroit, a city whose most positive qualities are often overlooked in the media. This book is a reaction against the way that iconic modernist architecture is often represented. Whereas other writers may focus on the design intentions of the architect, authors Aubert, Cavar and Chandani seek to show the organic and idiosyncratic ways that the people who live in Lafayette Park actually use the architecture and how this experience, in turn, affects their everyday lives. While there are many publications about abandoned buildings in Detroit and about the city’s prosperous past, this book is about a remarkable part of the city as it exists today, in the twenty-first century.

This inspiring 288-page volume from Metropolis books captures the convivial atmosphere the authors found at Detroit's Lafayette Park, a housing developement designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe that encompasses 32 hectares of towers, townhouses and parks. I visited the area 15 years ago, the book took me right back to its quiet streets, green spaces and distinctive glass and steel design. The three editors (also the book's graphic designers) bring Layfayette to life, primarily through interviews with residents and photographs of them in their apartments. Thanks to a master plan by architect Mies van der Rohe, urban planner Ludwig Hilbersheimer, landscape architect Alfred Caldwell and the spirit of its residents, the neighborhood turned out to be one of the most successful communities in Detroit.

In their new book, “Thanks for the View, Mr. Mies,” which is due out at the end of the month (Metropolis Books, $29.95), the editors Danielle Aubert, Lana Cavar and Natasha Chandani, graphic designers all, offer a portrait of Lafayette Park very different from the classic Mies monograph.
Contents include interviews with residents of Lafayette Park’s towers and town houses; archival materials from the complex’s history; an account of nine days spent trying to climate-control a corner apartment; and essays on Mies in Detroit, the Lafayette Park landscape, bird-watching and a record of bird-strike deaths (birds and plate glass don’t mix).
At-home portraits of residents by Corine Vermeulen show Mies’s architecture as a strong frame for personal expression. Some homes look like shrines to 1958, while others reflect the lived-in décor of decades. Jacqueline Neal, an interior designer and 12-year resident of the Pavilion, the smallest of the complex’s three towers, spoke last month about living and accessorizing with Mies. One of my Favorite Books

Personally, I live in the Pavilion (of or Mr. Mies designs) so it was fascinating to read about the history of the Black Bottom/Lafayette Park area. This book is very eclectic in it's style. There are personal essays, letters, and history lessons scattered throughout the book.If you are interested in reading about the rise and fall of Detroit in a different light than the other post-apocalyptic books that people make Detroit out to be, check this book out.

Also, this book is definitely hip. It's also sold in the painfully expensive "Shinola" store in Detroit, so it's totally legit.

Fascinating Book and Creatively Conceived

I was barely aware of Mies' work on Lafayette Park and this book was a pure joy to read. Hats off to the authors for a creative way of telling the story; or, rather, letting others tell their stories. I'm glad it wasn't just a book about the architecture, landscape, and site. There's a lot of that here, but the human stories of the occupants are what really sets this apart. More architecture books need that kind of perspective. Well done.
