This book should be subtitled, "The Power of No More Bulls***"

This was a really amazing book. It literally changed my life. I have been reading a lot of self-development and psychology books and there are similar messages in all of them, including this one. This book just approaches it from a more simplistic "just do it" kind of perspective without all the scientific jargon of how you are rewiring your brain.

The end goal here is that amidst the spiritual undertones of the book, what Tolle is really educating people about is self-awareness, which is the cornerstone of growing emotional intelligence. I was reading Daniel Goleman's book, "Emotional Intelligence" at the same time and the parallels were quite obvious. The additional benefit that Tolle offers is walking through some meditations and affirmations and presenting the information in a way that is like an easy to digest conversation.

After I was about halfway through the book, I had a moment of sitting in my car by myself, and had the thought, "I don't have to take this bulls*** anymore, I am not a victim," and then I laughed for about five minutes and many months later, still feel great about all of the things I was able to let go of.

Life is in the NOW

Since a large percentage of our patient office visits are anxiety & stress based over past occurances or future worries, I think this book has the ability to wake people up to treating their medical issues in a different way. As physicians, I believe we must teach our patients skills instead of following Big Pharma & insurance companies demands to push 10 minute drug visits only. This book is a great help to bring people into present moment where we are not only okay but truly alive. I re listen to the audio version while doing my walks.

Eckhart Tolle's, The Power of Now, is a monumental achievement in spiritual literature.

The theme of the Power of Now is that you can find and maintain a deep sense of peace, joy and fulfillment, and in doing so, "return home to yourself." These concepts are very real and attainable. The goal is to break through the barrier of the noise of the mind. When you do this, it is like having total awareness of being alive. It is like being able to see the world with clarity and without the constant stream of mental judgments, mental noise and fear. Even the appearance of objects seems so different and vibrant. And even physical space takes on new meaning -- you sense that everything is connected. Knowledge takes on a deeper dimension that transcends language. Instead of having faith in God, you know and feel God. You go through life having a deep sense of peace and joy. You feel that peace and joy within yourself and external to yourself. It is a life with little mental fear. The peace you feel is not like coming home to yourself, it is coming home to yourself, meaning your natural state of being. When you realign with yourself, it becomes obvious that this state is the way you were meant to be.

A main theme to Eckhart Tolle's book, The Power of Now, is that humanity can change, but it will start with individuals returning to their spiritual center. His message is that we need to look to the past and see the common thread of messages of hope given to us. These messages of hope are: (1) that we are spiritual beings; (2) that we do have an innate joy and peace within; (3) that we essentially have God within us; and (4) that we can experience a new reality that is radically different, but radically true to whom we are.

The Power of Now's message is that many people of he past and present have broken the barrier of fear and discontentment; they have rediscovered or reconnected with their deep sense of peace and joy. In our lack of understanding, we often refer to these people with terminology that may not really be accurate: "enlightened," "awakened," "mystics," "gurus," "holy," etc. These terms are too loaded and create an impression that such a state is unlikely to occur to the average person. We can find our peace and joy and find it now. We are not discriminated against when it comes to God's Grace.

Tolle aids the process of coming home to ourselves. He provides us with an age-old message and road map to achieve this. The road map is simple, yet so profound. The message is simply: we need to quiet our minds.

So, how do we quiet our minds according to Tolle? How do we realign with ourselves? How do we take off the onion layers to our minds and reconnect with that joyful and peaceful part of ourselves?

The term meditation is probably not what you think or have been taught. Meditation as it used here is more a way of life that can be used in any and every activity you do for the rest of your life. Eckhart Tolle talks about different ways to get reconnected with ourselves. What is interesting is that many of the methods are somewhat mechanical, and the process is less spiritual than one might think. The end result, however, is certainly deeply spiritual.

Some of these methods are:

1. Breathing and being aware of your breathing;
2. Being the witness of your thoughts without judgment -- allowing thoughts to flow without identifying with your thoughts -- deeply acknowledging that you are not our thoughts;
3. Feeling your physical body and allowing it be without judgment;
4. Feeling your emotional body (including the emotional pain) and allowing it be without going on thinking tangents about the pain -- just being there with the raw physical emotional pain.
5. Getting in touch with the silence and stillness that is ever present; (so as you listening intently to the world around, you pay attention also to the silence that is behind all sounds);
6. Being totally present where you are and allowing that which happens to be;
7. Acknowledge and avoid the traps of time -- with a deep understanding that in reality what happened in the past is no longer; and what happens in the future is not now (basically time really does not, from a physics perspective, exist);
8. Accepting what you are at any given moment;
9. The simple act of asking God to allow you to feel His presence/His Grace, and then, the act of you feeling God's presence;
10. To go deep inside yourself and realize that innate joy that is ever present -- God.
11. Feeling the stillness within yourself.

One myth is that to obtain peace, joy and God, you need to takes years of monk-like seclusion. In fact, finding what was traditionally known as "enlightenment" could take a few minutes. The quicker you break down the noise of the mind and become present with the world without judgment, the quicker you can come home to yourself.

About the Author

Martine Daniel was born in York in 1981. From a young age, she knew she wanted to be a writer, and whilst at secondary school she would often be caught scribbling stories in the back of exercise books during lessons. Her dreams of seeing her name in print never dimmed, despite her life being turned upside down by episodes of mania, depression and psychosis during her late teens and early twenties.

In 2003 the pressures of a stressful job brought on an episode of psychotic mania, which led to the breakdown that ended her hopes of a career in bookselling, following which Martine was finally forced into contact with local mental health services. With the help of medication and the support of her family, she began to pick up the pieces of her life and started work on her first novel The Fire in Your Eyes (published 2009), juggling work on the novel with her studies with The Open University. Her second novel, Legacy of Lies, the sequel to The Fire in Your Eyes, and her third novel, Wading the Waters of my Mind, were both published in 2010.

Martine is a keen supporter of the Time to Change campaign and hopes that her writing can help to put an end to the stigma of mental illness.

Excellent Read! Explains the Illness Beautifully!

I must say I was taken aback regarding how excellent this book is. I'm the depressive type so not everything is going to apply to me, same as a Bi-Polar type. But everything was wonderful! I return to this book many times for repeated info and to help me explain to my family my illness. It's so simple and makes it such a simple concept. I HIGHLY recommend this Book!

This book definitely lives up to it's title. By making such complex material "simplified", the author has created a highly readable, easy-to-understand synopsis of this generally less understood mental illness and it's devastating effects on the lives of the people it touches as well as those who care about them. The short, logically written chapters highlight important clinical points about the disease's signs, symptoms and treatment in an easy-to-understand way. Each clinical section is complemented and brought to life by compelling first person accounts that draw us into the worlds of psychosis and mood malfunctions characteristic of this disorder. Overall I found this book to be highly readable as well as educational and therefore recommend it for all.

Like a dictionary

This book contains a lot of information but isn't very helpful because it doesn't have enough examples or illustrations. It is like reading the definition of a difficult word and still not knowing how to use the word in a sentence. Just from reading a few hours online I felt I already knew most of the information in this book.

Great for making homeschool feel like public school

I purchased this text at a much better price than my kids school could have on Barnes and Noble. I personally don't care for the curriculum as much as the Harcourt Language Grade 2. We are 4 chapters in, and working on simple and complete predicates. I personally don't think that this is appropriate use of an 8 year olds time, not only it is confusing, it does not help you become a better writer. The seller used USPS, which managed to fold this 600 pages book in half to shove inside my 6x6 community mail box. Awesomeness. The book was very mangled but it gave me a reason to berate the postal system.

targets those new to java, but bad practices in java :(

As I read the reviews on Amazon for “Test Automation using Selenium WebDriver with Java: A Step by Step Guide”, I'm wondering if the reviewers read the same book as I did. I can't recommend this book to anyone.

The target audience for this book appears to be testers who don't yet know Java. Chapter 8 covers the basics of Java including what is a class and basic syntax like creating variables and if statements. Now Selenium WebDriver is a programming API implemented in a few languages. This book uses Java as the chosen language, which is fine. I have difficultly with the idea that you can write 90 pages (that's almost 25% of the book) without your readers yet having any knowledge of the language that is being used in the book. Some of it is good – covering why you'd want to test and concepts. But that's a really long introduction. Oh and I hope you like screenshots. I counted 75 screenshots in those first 90 pages. While I do like screenshots for installing software and showing tools, this feels like an excessive number.

Ok. Chapter 9 is titled “Creating First Selenium WebDriver Script.” Great. We are finally going to learn how to write code in WebDriver. Nope. This chapter is about how to export a script from Selenium IDE and how to use Eclipse. There's a tiny bit of explanation of what the exported script is doing, but that's more in Chapter 10. Ok. Chapter 10. Now we are FINALLY going to learn how to write code in WebDriver right? I suppose we do. We get 1.5 pages of unannotated code followed by five lines of explanation. The rest of the chapter is basically three pages of tables with APIs. The table does say what the method does, but this is a very fast moving way of introducing Selenium. And the book has held our hand and assumed no knowledge thus far.

I do like the justification for automation. I like the multiple choice questions for review. And the idea of a case study to have the the examples using the same topic throughout. I like that tools that Selenium integrates with are explored although I think it came at the expensive of becoming proficient in WebDriver. I like that property files and parameterized tests from Excel are covered. I like that recipes in chapter 27 at the end although I wish there was more focus on them.

Even thought there are things that I like, I can't recommend this book. The formatting of code is really bad. Tab indent lines are inconsistent but look like 10-15 spaces. Which causes lots of wrapping and makes it hard to read. On page 229, there are even spaces in keywords and variable names. In a number of cases imports have the wrong case and won't compile. JUnit is frequently spelled as Junit. @Before is written as @before. These are small things, but there are a ton of them which is distracting. And for a book that targets people new to Java, they aren't so obvious to figure out when typing in an example and wondering why the code doesn't compile. There's also a lot of English grammar errors.

There are also bad practices being touted as good practices. At the end, he recommends variable be named with the type like blnFound and strFirstName. Hungarian notation is controversial enough, but this isn't even standard for Java. There's an un-removed reference to VBScript before that table which appears to be where it comes from. Within the book, he uses a mix of Hungarian notation (iNumber and sName) and normal Java notation (number and name).

He also recommends HA_BE_login as a method name. Except he calls it a function name because he is presumably a VB guy who doesn't realize Java developers don't call them functions. And this is intentional. He thinks he is being clever by creating this abbreviation convention. Don't name your method that! There's not a character shortage. There's no reason this can't be HotelAppBusinessFunctionLogin. Which actually follows Java naming conventions and is easier to read.

These last two bother me a lot because they are bad practices in Java. Teaching someone new to Java bad practices in Java is not setting them up for success.

While all of the things I've mentioned would have had me take off stars, combined they just leave me with the advice to pick another book.
