Very good overview of Genesis

I have studied Genesis a lot in the past, and was looking for a good book for a small group study. Genesis is the basis for almost everything for Christians and Jews alike, and there is so much information it is daunting to try to teach/study it. However, this is an excellent overview book. Personally I am a Creationist, and this book is not at odds with that. But it also is not pushy about what you believe about creation, and presents several theories (ie, day-age, gap theory, etc) and gives quotes from several well-know authors/speakers. Same is true for flood: Was it world-wide or local? It gives both points of view.

If you are looking for a book that revises what the book of Genesis says, this is NOT it. There are plenty of those out there. The book holds true to the traditional Biblical meaning of Genesis, giving us the basis for religion, marriage, family, government, etc, while leaving some room for interpretation on controversial points. Highly recommended.

artwork is from ancient artifacts

I ordered several books on the Maya & haven't had time to fully read this one, but have skimmed it. But based on another review, I did look at the pictures before I shared it with my kids. These are not illustrations: much of the artwork is photographs of ancient sculptures, wall paintings and masks. These are how the ancient Mayans depicted themselves, not how a modern artist has drawn them. There is one illustration that looks like it is modern, but it is describing ancient Mayan society & is very much in keeping with the style of the photographs of the original artifacts. Other than that one illustration, the photos that are not of artifacts are of modern Mayan people, housing, or ruins of Mayan sites. My skim of the text is that it seems very informative & I like that they give pronunciation of difficult words. It looks like a colorful, informative book that I look forward to reading with my kids. I think for the price & the attention span of the intended audience, it seems very good.

This is a pretty good kids book about the Maya. My boys and I all learned some basic info before we visited some ruins in Belize. It's a quick read and an easy way to learn some interesting facts about the Mayan civilization.

not as good as I hoped

There are two things I like about this Bible:
1. The NKJV text is written out in paragraph form instead of each verse starting on a new line. I really like this, as I like the NKJV translation but find the way it is formatted in regular Bibles distracting.

2. Unlike some chronological Bibles, this one includes the entire text of the Bible. When a story is duplicated in different books of the Bible, each version is included (usually one after the other, but not always).

The biggest drawback to this Bible is that the commentaries/articles are far less helpful and more distracting than I expected. I had thought that I would be able to just ignore them if I didn't like them, but there are so many of them, and they are placed very prominently (not in the margins like in some other study Bibles). I found that they continually drew my attention away from the Biblical text.

I began my reading with the gospels. I was interested to read them all combined and get what I thought would be fuller, clearer picture of Jesus' life. However, the commentaries were always pointing out "discrepancies" and explaining them from a what seemed to be a faithless perspective.

At first I thought maybe it was my own bias that made the commentaries seem to have an anti-Christian slant. So I continued to read, going next to Samuel/Kings/Chronicles. The commentaries there also had a secular slant, with a heavy focus on pagan religions. They seemed to be implying that the God of the Bible is no more real or true than any other. I tried to give the commentators the benefit of the doubt until I came across the phrase (in the commentary about King Uzziah) "Yahweh's Jerusalem cult." At that point, I decided to stop using this Bible.

Also, I found that reading the Bible chronologically didn't actually enhance my interest or understanding as I had expected it to. It still didn't read like a coherent story -- at least not in this particular version.

Oh -- one more tiny thing. Other reviewers had commented about the psalms being placed near the events they were written about, but it turns out that there are only a few psalms where this information is actually known. So what they did was lump chunks of psalms together topically. This was not helpful to me, so I usually ended up skipping over the psalms to get back to the narrative.

Be aware of several things before purchasing this....

I just received this Bible as a gift recently and I was initially delighted. However, I was almost immediately appalled to see that many of the comments in this "study Bible" have been heavily influenced by secular history and liberal scholars. It starts in the Genesis accounts at the beginning, which uses some secular history timelines that support the evolutionary record, or at least secular interpretations of so-called modern history. Rather than present alternative theories, the "time capsules" present their timelines as historical facts, leaving no room for literal interpretations of the clear genealogical timelines that are laid out in Genesis. There is only one mention that I could find of taking the genealogy accounts in Genesis literally, which places creation at about 4004 B.C. The notes in this Bible quickly dismiss this idea, which is disappointing. Another example that I read is in Esther in which the "scholars" point out problems with Esther from a historical view point. However, they then mention in later notes that Mordecai is mentioned in historical records, which seemingly contradicts their original point. I have not read through all the notes yet in this "study Bible", but I would strongly caution you against purchasing this if you take the Bible's history literally. The Bible has been proven to be the most reliable ancient source of history - more than any other document in the world, and secular views are consistently proven wrong when compared to the Bible, so why not trust it completely? As an alternative, consider buying "the Evidence Bible" or the "Defender's Bible" - both of which provide real factual evidence and don't rely so much on secular interpretations (see links below). Overall, there may be some helpful historical cross-references here, but sorting through the liberal and secular interpretations make this a disappointing purchase indeed and could lead people astray.

Absolutely fantastic work!!! I've been looking for a good chronologically formatted bible for a little while now but I also wanted a good study bible and this bible more than fit the bill. FOR THOSE WHO ARE LOOKING FOR A GREAT STUDY BIBLE THAT ALLOWS YOU TO LOOK UP SCRIPTURE USING THE STANDARD BOOK-CHAPTER-VERSE METHOD THIS BIBLE IS NOT FOR YOU because it isn't designed that way. Since it is laid out in chronological order the books are interspersed and blended together over the period of time pertinent to the discussion. By example, all prophetic writings of the same time and content regardless of the author are placed according to their relation in content, context and time. And in the same way when one reads the gospels as they're laid out in this book one is reading the gospels BLENDED TOGETHER in the same manner as described previously. So that at the completion of a discourse from one of the gospels the reader is presented with the correlating account from one of the other books of the gospels without having to turn to the other book separately.
As for the information contained in this book that is placed for the sake of educating the reader such as language and social customs- historical/archaeological findings- maps-diagrams-charts this book is only surpassed by a true master study bible which would set the reader back by anywhere from three to six times the cost of this book.
I would wholeheartedly and in good conscience strongly recommend this book for any reader of the bible from the casual reader to advanced student.

Thisabsurd, bitter sweet situation led to a whole story in which things become morecomplicated when her old love, the one who the heroine never stopped thinking about, surprisingly comes back into her life.Naturally, her close family members, who have their own crises, come to life inthe story.

Time to Begin

Time To Begin is a great romance.

Who would want to be pregnant with their ex-husband's baby? It made a very good story. It tells how the main character Amayla struggles with the realization of getting pregnant and how to tell people in her life. She finds new freedoms with being divorced but being pregnant.

The other characters in the book - her ex-husband who is still so kind and caring, her over bearing mother, her loving father, her best friend, etc... There are a lot of characters that make this book very exciting.

It is a true love story. I love how it ends but you will have to read it for yourself to find that out.

Sweet and honest

When the all paths that you’ve walked crumble under your feet…. What do you do? In “Time To Begin” by Vered Schnabel, that very real, and very deep question is faced by Amalya as the life she has known takes a direction she never intended.
The morning of Amalya’s divorce ceremony dawned clear and bright. She woke that morning with one fate in mind and laid down that night a different woman, divorceed – and pregnant. What was she going to do? How would she tell anyone? Her ex-husband, Rani? Her Mother? It’s a complicated tangle that fills her with trepidation, and fear. Her marriage dissolved on the heels of a miscarriage – what if this pregnancy couldn’t go to term? What if it did?
Emotional and honest, this book strips the soul raw and asks questions few of us have pondered. Amalya navigates a new world while dealing with hormones, secrets, realities and an old love that somehow becomes new again.

Fantastic and Well Written!!

Life can be complicated. You never know what can happen next. Amalya knows this all too well. After dealing with a pregnancy that ended badly, her marriage began to fall apart. The lost destroyed their relationship, leaving Amalya and her husband Rani to make the decision to get a divorce. BUT not long after their divorce, does Amalya find out she's pregnant once again with Rani's baby. With everything going on what is she to do? How can she tell her Mom? Or her best friend?

In Time to Begin by Vered Schnabel; you are swept into a heart-warming and unique family story, of not only Amalya and Rani, but also Amalya's mother Yona, her best friend Anna, and Yiftach, her "old-new" guy. Schnabel describes the characters in a way that makes you feel like you've known them for years, with a fantastic and well written plot. This story is simply amazing. With each chapter I couldn't wait to see what was going to happen to the characters next. Perfect for long Winter day! Highly recommended!

"Friendly Authoritarianism"

An Introduction to Japanese Society is a book no serious student of Japan (or East Asia generally) can afford to pass up. It affords an unflinching and incisive look at the nature of Japanese democracy by a Japanese scholar who pulls no punches. While quite a few Western scholars have characterized the Japanese elementary school classroom, for example, as less authoritarian than its American counterpart, Sugimoto contends that authoritarianism is pronounced but subtly pervasive throughout Japanese society. Instead of accentuating top-down coercion by authorities, as Korean and Chinese societies do, Japanese authoritarianism is more subtle, relying heavily on indirect controls such as small group pressures, extensive surveillance, moralistic ideologies, positive reinforcements, mythologies of benevolent leadership, and pleasant rituals to mask underlying and potentially coercive power. As Sugimoto persuasively demonstrates, "Japanese friendly authoritarianism does not normally exhibit its coercive face." But when all else fails, it can and does exercise the full measure of its power. Sugimoto's book should inspire more Western scholars to take a closer look at the informal mechanisms of control in Japanese society. If Sugimoto is right, Japan has far to go before it becomes a full-fledged democracy.

I wasn't impressed

I'm not a Japan scholar, just a layperson very interested in Japanese culture. I bought this book hoping it would actually be, uh, an introduction to Japanese society (as the title seems to indicate). Instead, though, as the first review indicates, the author has some theses about present-day Japan that he's trying to prove. Fine with me, but then the title doesn't really seem accurate.

I was also hoping for a lot more about Japanese culture: literature, pop culture, gay rights, cinema, gender equality, etc. Instead, there are a lot of very dry chapters about the Japanese economy and the ethnic breakdown of Japan (though, in my opinion, not enough about the social implications of Japan's ethnic composition).

I found this book kind of dull, and the writing pretty dry. Maybe a great book for sociologists and economists of Japan (if they care more about the info than about whether the writing is stellar), but if you're just a random person looking to learn more about Japan, I'd look elsewhere first.
