An excellent book - this is the second book is a ...

An excellent book - this is the second book is a trilogy by Berdoll that "sequels" Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. I am a Jane Austen purist and have read all her books several times each. Pride and Prejudice is my favorite. Berdoll does an excellent job of continuing the story. She goes into the bedroom, where Austen would never go, but Berdoll does it with humor and passion. You KNOW Elizabeth and Darcy would have to passionate. Berdoll is a great storyteller, has an amazing sense of humor, and possesses tremendous insight as to human nature. She continues to portray the original Pride and Prejudice characters in the same vein as Jane Austen, with a few little tweaks. Berdoll also creates new characters. I found her writing style not only similar to Jane Austen, but also the Charles Dickens. Many of the scenes and characters could come out of a Dicken's novel. I suggest that you read all three of the Berdoll sequels to Pride and Prejudice, starting with Mr. Darcy Takes a Wife. I don't believe anyone could quit after the first book. I listened to the first book (Mr. Darcy Takes a Wife) on Audible.com. It was excellent and the reader (Landor) was fantastic. The next two I read on Kindle because they are not yet on Audible. I listened/read all three in two days. Couldn't help myself - they were just so wonderful. If book two and three ever come out on Audible, I will immediately listen to them (particularly if Landor is the reader). In the meantime I am going to get the written version of Mr. Darcy Takes a Wife and read it, plus re-read Darcy and Elizabeth and The Darcys; the Ruling Passion. I need to do this in order to write down some of the fantastic Berdoll quotes that struck me so forcefully. Berdoll has some remarkably insightful, clever and hilarious observations. I could not stop to write them down as I read the first time because I did not want to wait to see what happened next! Yes, Berdoll is fantastic and this book is too.

Dirty Windows in Rosings

And what happened to Lizzy and Darcy after the wedding? Several authors have attempted to answer that more or even less successfully and turn Jane Austen's novel into a multi-tome saga. This author is attempting mightily - using big words, foreign words, archaic spelling and then falls flat on her nose because characters are seriously stuck in the late 20's century with herbs and healing and stuff like dirty fingernails on doctors and breastfeeding. Plot - what plot? Many mini-plots and sub-plots and deviations and introduction of miscellaneous characters. Why do we need to know about the aristocratic lover of the child of the child of Wickham? Yes, yes, yes ... the sub-plot! It eventually all comes together somehow, but I got the feeling that the author had a daily quota of words to put on paper. With all that info, I have some serious questions about questions that were introduced and not answered - the marriage alliances for one. More books to come! I am not going to buy them.

Darcy and Elizabeth: Nights and Days at Pemberley

Continuation of Linda Berdoll's first book, "Mr. Darcy Takes a Wife". Darcy and Elizabeth have a very warm, loving, and amorous marriage. Many days and nights are spent providing each other's firm commitment. Colonel Fitzwilliam heads back to France to fight against Napoleon. Following him, Georgiana follows him across the channel to France to serve as a nurse. She leaves Pemberley with the young groom. Darcy thinking she is eloping with him, follows them to France. Lizzy doesn't tell him she is again with child, because she doesn't want him to be worried about anything else other than his sister. When he finally catches up with her, she's is in a makeshift camp tending to the wounded soldiers. He finds Colonel Fitzwilliam also. He is badly wounded and may not pull through. He also finds his groom, John Christie, dying from a gun shot in the stomach. His killer is his own commanding officer, Wickham. Months pass and when Darcy finally arrives home he finds himself father to twins. More family disasters occur that call for Darcy's assistance. Between handling family matters and romps with Elizabeth, it's a wonder that poor Darcy finds time to handle Pemberley. But for goodness sake, the man sure knows how to smile.

an excellent graduate level book on electrochemistry

This is the BEST book on electrochemistry especially if you are interested in modeling. While it provides the most accurate description on the subject, it is hard to read. This has already been pointed out by other reviewers. But if you are doing modeling, you have to have the accurate understanding of the subject rather than just a good idea that other books could provide.

This book is hard to read because it is precise and because one needs quite a lot of background before appreciating its content. As pointed out by the book itself, the subject is an interplay of heat/mass transfer, fluid dynamics, kinetics, and thermodynamics. For me, the most difficult part is the thermodynamics and the book has the best and most accurate desciption on electrochemical potential, which is a thermodynamic concept. If you are not already comfortable with chemical potential, activity, and fugacity, you will find it hard to appreciate some the arguments made by Newman. This applies to other aspects but I myself have adquate background on those and do not struggle as much.

For books of this level, do not expect to understand everything the first time. I have read some chapters quite a few times. And I got new understanding each time I read it.

I wish the book could provide answers to some of the problems at the end of each chapter. For self-learners like myself, it is important to practice some problems to enhance the understanding.

Excellent and cannot give up

My background is electrical engineering and one day I had to study Newman's book for battery modeling. It seems hard to read at first glance. Nevertheless, for me this is due to a lack of background in thermodynamics, physical chemistry, as well as electrochemistry. After studying various books on thermodynamics, P. W. Atkins' physical chemistry (only the relevant contents) as well as the electrochemistry book by Carl H. Hamann, Andrew Hamnett and Wolf Vielstich (I recommend that book for self study on electrochemistry), I became much more comfortable of Newman's ideas and interpretation. In Chapters 11, 12 and 13, Newman let the readers do some of the detailed mathematical derivation steps (he did not give the detailed math since this book should be regarded as a standard classic in the field, rather than lecture notes), and I spent a lot of time in carrying out the procedure. No pains, no gains. I even believe that the self-derivation is a good homework in order to strengthen the students' mathematical ability in modeling. Then I turned to love this book and the more I read it, the more I love it. I love the clear concepts and most of my questions are answered by Newman just at the correct moment. It is good for theroretical modeling in the field of electrochemistry and hardly can one find a comparable book in the clarity and completeness of theoretical concepts in electrochemistry (Bard's book is more experimental-oriented). Newman's thought is deep and the application of his work has led to many succesful progress in battery modeling, as can be seen from various theoretical papers on J. Electrochem. Soc. using his theory. I thank Prof. Newman for doing this excellent work for us.

This is the most accessible electrochemical engineering text that I have seen and is a great companion for Bard's Electrochemical Methods textbook. The material is presented in a very understandable fashion.

SHAMANS GIVEN THE VOICE OF PRINT !!!!!!

This is a classic, A true voice of the shamans ! The entries, or Shamans given a voice of print here is greatly varied, time wise (Shamans may disagree here) and geographically. What I really love about this volume is that it produces what the title implies.The author does indeed let the Shamans have their say, accompanied by her more than able prose, this book is surely a sublime offering of wisdom and is true art!!!! From Crow Dog to Black Elk to Sereptie to Maria Sabina to Manuel Cordova-Rios to Isaac Tens to Prem Das to many others, if you can find a more varied source of true Indigenous Shamanic wisdom, Please let me know, because it would already be in my Cart !!!! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED !!!!

One of the Best.

Books on shamanism tend to be quite a mixed bunch in terms of quality. Shamanic Voices though is one of the best and most authentic (steering well clear of the flakey "new age" type of shamanism). I would also recommend highly Wizard of the Upper Amazon or any book by Jeremy Narby. Joan Halifax has collected a variety of writtings in this book, my favorite of which is the artic shamans and also the slightly sad story of the aboriginal Australian shaman who lost his power. This is one of my favorite books and comes highly recommended!

The Real Deal

This book is for the serious apprentice, though it's possible casual readers might enjoy the stories as well. Those looking for new age fluff should pass on this text, until they can learn to appreciate hands-on techniques 'solitude & suffering to transcend' and other fun topics like that. I've read many books on shamanism over the years but this one is the one I'd prefer to keep with me in place of all the others. This and perhaps Shapeshifting by John Perkins.
