EXCELENT PLAN FOR AN IRONMAN
By MGAC
I bought this book several years ago with the intention to do an Ironman sometime in the future. For the last 4 years I was reading the book on and off. Last year I decided to signed for the 2010 Florida Ironman. I used this book as my primary coach (in my case focusing more on the bike and running sections,). The plan is great, easy to understand (sometimes you need to go back to other sections) but in general is simple. The concept of HR training is way better than focusing on a specific pace/mile idea that I used to focused in running training.
The results.... I finished my first Ironman in 10h 26min, feeling strong (marathon in 3h48min, and not walking at all)
I highly recommend this book.....at the same time, you need to follow the plan

Best Triathlon Book I have found!
By Martin Busher
I bought this book on the net after trawling through the many books on the subject. It's always a problem when choosing a book, if will be as described by the author and fit your needs. This book is very well written and gives direct and clear information on how to train for an Ironman event. My reason for purchasing this book was to get a structure for training and it has delivered. I intend to do the Barcelona Ironman in October the rest is up to me because I believe the book should deliver! Try it yourself.

Key reference for training programs
By Danielle Trego
I bought this book to help me lay out a training program for my first Ironman. I didn't follow the training program exactly, but used it as a key reference. I had great success with my first Ironman after using this book and have lent it out to several friends since then to use for their Ironman training as well.

Hig somehow survived the flu pandemic that killed everyone he knows. Now his wife is gone, his friends are dead, and he lives in the hangar of a small abandoned airport with his dog, Jasper, and a mercurial, gun-toting misanthrope named Bangley.

But when a random transmission beams through the radio of his 1956 Cessna, the voice ignites a hope deep inside him that a better life exists outside their tightly controlled perimeter. Risking everything, he flies past his point of no return and follows its static-broken trail, only to find something that is both better and worse than anything he could ever hope for.

Amazon.com Review

Amazon Best Books of the Month, August 2012: Adventure writer Peter Heller’s The Dog Stars is a first novel set in Colorado after a superflu has culled most of humanity. A man named Hig lives in a former airport community—McMansions built along the edge of a runway—which he shares with his 1956 Cessna, his dog, and a slightly untrustworthy survivalist. He spends his days flying the perimeter, looking out for intruders and thinking about the things he’s lost—his deceased wife, the nearly extinct trout he loved to fish. When a distant beacon sparks in him the realization that something better might be out there, it’s only a matter of time before he goes searching. Poetic, thoughtful, transformative, this novel is a rare combination of the literary and highly readable. --Chris Schluep

Amazon Exclusive: Author Peter Heller on the Star of The Dog Stars The inspiration for Jasper, a Blue Heeler mix, who is an integral part of this novel.

Our Hero, Hig, lives at a little country airstrip which he shares with his beloved blue heeler Jasper, and a mean gun nut named Bangley. It's nine years after a super-flu has killed 99.7% of the people on the planet. Hig sleeps out under the open sky at night with Jasper. He does it because he loves to see the stars, and because it's safer: if marauders come he won't be trapped in one of the nearby houses.

He used to have a book of the stars, but now he doesn't, so when he's lying out at night he makes up constellations. Mostly they are animals, and he makes one for his best friend Jasper. The Dog Stars. It's Hig's way of reinventing the lost world, and keeping in touch with the things he loves.

Jasper, to me, is the star of the book. He is fiercely loyal, and he gives Hig something to live for when there is not much else to hold on to.

A San Francisco Chronicle and Atlantic Monthly Best Book of the Year

“Extraordinary. . . . One of those books that makes you happy for literature.” —Junot Díaz, The Wall Street Journal

“This end-of-the-world novel [is] more like a rapturous beginning. . . . Remarkable.” —San Francisco Chronicle

“For all those who thought Cormac McCarthy’s The Road the last word on the post-apocalyptic world—think again. . . . Make time and space for this savage, tender, brilliant book.” —Glen Duncan, author of The Last Werewolf

“Heart-wrenching and richly written. . . . The Dog Stars is a love story, but not just in the typical sense. It’s an ode to friendship between two men, a story of the strong bond between a human and a dog, and a reminder of what is worth living for.” —Minneapolis Star-Tribune

“A dreamy, postapocalyptic love letter to things of beauty, big and small.” –Gillian Flynn, author of Gone Girl

"Heartbreaking" —The Seattle Times

“A brilliant success.” —The New Yorker

“Beautifully written and morally challenging” –The Atlantic Monthly

“A book that rests easily on shelves with Dean Koontz, Jack London or Hemingway." —The Missourian

"Dark, poetic, and funny." —Jennifer Reese, NPR

“Terrific. . . . Recalling the bleakness of Cormac McCarthy and the trout-praising beauty of David James Duncan, The Dog Stars makes a compelling case that the wild world will survive the apocalypse just fine; it’s the humans who will have the heavy lifting.” —Outside

“A post-apocalyptic adventure novel with the soul of haiku.” —The Columbus Dispatch
“An elegy for a lost world turns suddenly into a paean to new possibilities. In The Dog Stars, Peter Heller serves up an insightful account of physical, mental, and spiritual survival unfolded in dramatic and often lyrical prose.” —The Boston Globe

“Take the sensibility of Hemingway.  Or James Dickey.  Place it in a world where a flu mutation has wiped out ninety-nine percent of the population. Add in a heartbroken man with a fishing rod, some guns, a small plane. Don’t forget the dog. Now imagine this man retains more hope than might be wise in such a battered and brutal time. More trust. More hunger for love—more capacity for it, too. That’s what Peter Heller has given us in his beautifully written first novel.” —Scott Smith, author of A Simple Plan and The Ruins

“With its evocative descriptions of hunting, fishing, and flying, [The Dog Stars], perhaps the world’s most poetic survival guide, reads as if Billy Collins had novelized one of George Romero’s zombie flicks.” —Publishers Weekly (starred)

“The Dog Stars can feel less like a 21st-century apocalypse and more like a 19th-century frontier narrative (albeit one in which many, many species have become extinct). There are echoes of Grizzly Adams or Jeremiah Johnson in scenes where Heller lingers on the details of how the water in a flowing stream changes color as the sun moves across the sky.” —The Dallas Morning News

“Full of action and hope…. One you’ll not soon forget.” — The Oklahoman

“A heavenly book, a stellar achievement by a debut novelist that manages to combine sparkling prose with truly memorable, shining, characters.” —The New York Journal of Books

“Gruff, tormented and inspirational, Heller has the astonishing ability to make you laugh, cringe and feel ridiculously vulnerable throughout the novel that will have you rereading certain passages with a hard lump in the pit of your stomach. One of the most powerful reads in years.” —Playboy

“The Dog Stars is a wholly compelling and deeply engaging debut.” —Pam Houston, author of Contents May Have Shifted

“Beautiful, haunting and hopeful. . . . Makes your breath catch and your heart ache.” —Aspen Daily News

“At times funny, at times thrilling, at times simply heartbreaking and always rich with a love of nature, The Dog Stars finds a peculiar poetry in deciding that there’s really no such thing as the end of the world—just a series of decisions about how we live in whatever world we’ve got.” —Salt Lake City Weekly

“What separates Heller’s book from other End of Days stories is that it doesn’t rely on the thematic fail-safes to tell the story—The Dog Stars is quite simply the story of what it’s like to be alonet.” —The Stranger

“Proves a truth we know from our everyday nonfictional lives: Even when it seems like all the humans in the world are only out for themselves, there are always those few who prove you absolutely wrong—in the most surprising of ways.” —Oprah.com

“Heller has created a heartbreakingly moving love story. . . . It’s an ode to what we’ve lost so far, and how we risk losing everything.” —Cincinnati City Beat

“A stunning, hope-riddled end-of-the-world story. . . . Bound to become a classic.” —Flavorwire

“Heller’s writing gives you a heartbreaking jolt, like a sudden wakening from a dream.”  —The Seattle Times

“Heller is a masterful storyteller and The Dog Stars is a beautiful tribute to the resilience of nature and the relentless human drive to find meaning and deep connections with life and the living.” —Julianna Baggott, author of Pure

“Terrific . . . With echoes of Moby Dick, The Dog Stars . . . brings Melville’s broad, contemplative exploration of good and evil to his story.” —Shelf Awareness

“Heller’s surprising and irresistible blend of suspense, romance, social insight, and humor creates a cunning form of cognitive dissonance neatly pegged by Hig as an ‘apocalyptic parody of Norman Rockwell’—a novel, that is, of spiky pleasure and signal resonance.” —Booklist (starred)

Brooding, With A Dash of Suspense
By R. P. Cotta Jr.
Fans of "doomsday" and "post-apocalypse" stories will find a lot to like in Peter Heller's "The Dog Stars." And a bit not to like. Hence my three-star rating.

The to like aspects include the unfolding story of Hig, his dog Jasper, and their odd companion Bangley, who lives by the maxim "shoot first" with no need to ask questions later. It's just that kind of a world, where every surviving Human is a threat to every other.

Hig is a pilot, who flies recon out of their derelict residential airport in an old Cessna, Jasper sitting second seat. When outsiders wander inside the "perimeter," it is usually Hig who spots them, and Bangley who does the wet work. Hig eventually flies off to hunt down a radio call he's heard, and finds more than he expected he would.

The not to like aspects of the book include its sort of "stream of consciousness" first person narrative, which at times is a bit confusing; and the slow pace of the first 125 pages or so.

The story revolves around Hig's efforts to survive in a hostile world, and his battle to preserve something of himself from the "before." In the end, it's about how the remnants of Humanity might try and stitch back together the fabric of social existence after it has been shredded. If there is a moral to the story, it must be that the Human spirit, and the Human heart, do not die easily. If there is a lesson to the story, it is that surviving the apocalypse is easier if you happen to know a former special ops soldier or two.

I enjoyed the book. It's not the sort that will grip you from the first paragraph on, but it will enmesh you in Hig's thoughts and feelings as it moves along, especially after he leaves on his quest. Most fans of "doomsday" or "post-apocalypse" stories will probably enjoy it as well.

Dare to Live Even When It Kills You
By TipsWithALip
It is hard for me to describe the power of this book, and I was surprised just now when I rated the mood of this post-apocalyptic story as "hopeful." But, in its odd, idiosyncratic and special way, I think it is. Even though the journey to that point of hope is a real doozy.

When I read this book, I was reminded of Tolstoy's line - "There is nothing great where truth, simplicity, and beauty are not present." This book hits all three, although they come in atypical and, at times, devastating forms. There are passages in this book that are more beautiful, more achingly honest, about true loss than almost anything else I have read, and they are all the more powerful because of the poetic simplicity of the prose, the sparing and economical word choice - the feeling you get that if anything else was said, it would not only be nonessential or redundant, it could finally crush the spirit beyond the possibility of recovery.

This book reminds you that the end of the world is not only a subjective expression but a completely subjective feeling; for some, the end is not real at all, for some the end happens nearly immediately, and for a few, the end doesn't happen until the person they are is gone and the reason for continuing to struggle to live is merely due to "curiosity." A chilling reason, but perhaps accurate. The mundane everyday drudgery is punctuated by sudden moments of pure horror, disgust, and savagery. During the span of one evening reading this book, I nearly vomited and then later cried harder than I would like to admit.

Some have complained about the clipped, stream-of-consciousness style of storytelling, but I think that is apropos for this tale. After all, when the end comes for the world and pretty much everyone is gone, what else would you have to hear, or listen to, than your own thoughts?

If all civilization came to a shuddering stop, what would enable the survivors to survive long-term? Would it be the homicidal ape that we are, the ability to kill and trap resources the most effectively, or would it be the better angels of our nature? Would it be the willingness to drop the gun, drop the sword, even if we had every reason to shoot or stab? What would really keep us alive? Perhaps more important, what would make us want to keep living?

I hope you have as rewarding an experience reading this book as I did. It will crush you, it will disturb you, but it will also lift you up- maybe you will even soar.

A Good Book
By Roadhouse
This was my first "post-apocalyptic" book. It was fine, although I think that some of the rhapsodic reviews the book has received are a bit over the top. Here, most of the world is done in by disease. The survivors apparently were immune. Our hero, Hig, is one of them. He is a decent guy. He can fly a plane. He has a great dog, his co-pilot, whom he loves. They're best pals. Hig's second best pal is an armed to the teeth warrior, a ruthless killer whose sole ethic is survival. The front of the book explores the emotional pain and guilt of the amoral and murderous world in which Hig, his dog and his friend reside.

But Hig has heard a distant radio signal that he is determined to track down and investigate ( a nice lift from Nevil Shute's "On The Beach"). He prepares his plane for the flight and leaves. Along the way, he happens upon a remote Eden-like enclave, occupied only by a beautiful woman and her salty, capable Dad. Together, they enjoy some near normalcy for a while. It's all very charming, but duty calls and Hig must fly and seek out the signal. What's not to like?

Heller's writing style is snappy and cool and there are some beautiful passages. It will be some time before I read another book in this genre, but I'm glad I read this one.

Hilariously Stupid
By Cate's Book Nut Hut
Okay, two things I want to say right up front is this little short had me laughing out loud as I read it in bed, much to the chagrin of Hubby who was trying to sleep, and secondly I want to repeat what the author has tried to drill in to the unsuspecting readers head:

THIS BOOK IS NOT FOR CHILDREN!

If you are looking for a book that is `politically correct; give this one a miss. If you are looking for a book that has all its grammatical and spelling ducks in a row; give it a miss. This book is pure unadulterated satire, full of `offensive' comments made by our nerdy `hero', and his faithful side kick. The book is, and I'll say this again, satire; satire is meant to be offensive and so far away from politically correct it would take light years to get there. This little book is also absolutely, hilariously stupid.

The Author uses a pen name, and maybe that's wise after reading this; it would save him having to move multiple times, and keep his insurance premiums down on house and car. Maybe I should consider doing the same after writing this review.

I am going to highly recommend this book to those people out there that are still unafraid to laugh, even if it is in the privacy of your own homes, at the inappropriate jokes, racial slurs and just plain stupidity that passes for common sense nowadays. I truly think you would get a kick out of this book... or is it a `journal', maybe a diary! To find out what I mean by this last sentence, pick it up and give it a read.

Talented author, but proper audience targeting is needed
By Apollinaire
The last chapter of this very short book is entitled "The Book Just Kind of Ends", and that really sums up the amount of structure contained in the book. There really is no plot.

It doesn't surprise me that readers have been confused as to what age group this is intended for. While I was reading it, I even thought that if the author did adjust the language to a younger age group, he might be quite successful. As it is, we are left with topics that can't possibly appeal to older readers but with language that is not appropriate for younger readers.

The author is clearly talented. There are no typos in this short story. The cover is amazing and the silly illustrations inside are great. I'm actually disappointed that this short story is kind of caught in the middle, because I think the author would score if he would make up his mind what audience he wants to target and then make the appropriate adjustments.

Anyway, I downloaded this for free and am immensely thankful to the author for the opportunity to read his work.

Nerds rule?
By paul little
This is a weirdly entertaining book that tells and outrageous story of an outcast and his run in with a bully. I enjoyed Derp Sandwich's writing style and the occassional drawings were splendid and delightfully additive rather than being an unnecessary focus. Life is difficult for the different and then as Melvin points out we are all different.

This is a humor book that has its dark side; it is a satire that is close to the truth for some people.

So, do nerds rule? No, probably not at school, but the big wide world is full of a lot of very well paid and powerful nerds. I can see great things happening in Derpy Dirk's future, whether he is involved or not is yet to be determined!

I received the book in two days with Prime. I was excited to start the book having seen the author on a Christian talk show. I found the book sort of ho-hum. I am about half way through and have lost interest. I didn't see anything new or relevant. For those that have not delved into this subject before, I think that you would find it interesting.

Amazon.com Review
Gordon S. Wood--winner of the Pulitzer Prize and professor of American history at Brown University--had no idea what he was getting into when he began this 653-page book. Innocently, he wanted to write a "monographic analysis of constitution-making in the Revolutionary era." Little did he know he would discover an intellectual world where a complete transformation of political thought was occurring, one that would create "a distinctly American system of politics." As Wood explains, "Beneath the variety and idiosyncrasies of American opinion there emerged a general pattern of beliefs about the social process--a set of common assumptions about history, society, and politics that connected and made significant seemingly discrete and unrelated ideas. Really for the first time I began to glimpse what late eighteenth-century Americans meant when they talked about living in an enlightened age." This original study of the American political system is a strong contribution to the scholarly studies of the events surrounding the nation's independence.

Outstanding
By R. Albin
This outstanding book is generally regarded as fundamental to understanding the American Revolution. Wood immersed himself in contemporary writings including a huge array of political pamphlets, sermons, letters, and other texts in an attempt to reconstruct the thinking of the people who made the Revolution and the Constitution. Wood begins with a reconstruction of how colonial Americans perceived the political organization of their societies, their relationship with Britain, and how they conceived politics in general. The initial parts of the book parallel and draw from Bernard Bailyn's outstanding book, The Ideological Origins of the American Revolution. Indeed, much of Wood's book can be seen as sequel to Bailyn's book.
Wood begins with a reconstruction of the pre-Revolutionary conception of politics. Like Bailyn, Wood reconstructs this as a compound of several elements but dominated by certain general Enlightenment concepts and the specific framework developed by dissident 18th century British Whig intellectuals. Basic concepts included the idea that political structure reflected basic social structures, that the 'people' embodied by parliamentary representation were opposed and oppressed by the Crown, and an obsession with 'corruption' induced by abuse of the executive power of the Crown.
The successful conclusion of the Revolution, however, did not produce the outcome predicted by this conception of politics. The resulting confederation and states were perceived by many American intellectuals as dominated by greed and self-interest, there was an absence of the expected moral regeneration, and there were increasing concerns about the power of state legislatures causing both abuse of minority rights and threats to social order.
The reaction to these problems produced a wholesale revision of American's conceptions of politics. In the period leading up to the formulation of the Constitution, many ideas that we accept as basic were formulated. The nascent and later explicit Federalists severed the coupling between social and political organization. This gave government an essentially independent role and represented a form of social engineering because the Federalists essentially depended on constructed institutions to guarantee social success rather than the prior emphasis on public virtue. The ideas of constitutionialism, large republics, delegation of sovereignty, mixed government with responsibility divided between states and the Federal government, and emphasis on social contracts as a source of authority all stem from this period.
Wood is careful to emphasize some particularly interesting aspects of this process. In some respects, the Federalist drive to constitutionalism was a reactionary act on the part of traditional elites who felt they were losing out in excessively egalitarian world created by the Revolution. The process was widely diffused. Important and generally recognized figures like Madison and James Wilson figure prominently in the story but Wood demonstrates how a host of other figures, many now obscure, contributed to and articulated this process.
In a sense, there were 2 American Revolutions. The first being actual revolt from the British Empire and the second being the dramatic change in political thought and institutions that followed the successful conclusion of that revolt. Wood does a wonderful job of delineating how this second revolution occurred.

"a true, enduring classic"
By John A. Wagner
Gordon S. Wood is one of the deans of the so-called "intellectual historians" of the Revolutionary era. I just finished reading this book for the third time in the last 15 years, and I am struck by the sweeping nature of it. Wood's thesis is essentially that Americans' thinking about government and politics underwent a remarkable change in the 11 years between the writing of the Declaration of Independence and the framing of the Constitution. In short, through a series of piecemeal changes during this brief period, Americans largely put together a new mode of political thinking. The key to Wood's argument seems to be his discussion of the changes that occurred in the locus of sovereignty, and the separation of political from social authority. "The people" play the key role here. They went from traditionally being "embodied" in one branch of the gov't (the House of Commons in England, for example), to being the source of all governmental authority. This change brought with it changes in the understanding of representation and of separation of powers, and made possible Americans' unique concept of federalism, and the development of an "American science of politics". Wood uses a dazzling array of sources to support his arguments, and in doing so, shows how many hands and brains were involved in this work. The book is long and the general reader may find it a bit difficult, but anyone interested in the development of American political thought cannot neglect it.

Truly Great Book
By R. Abbott
I agree with the observations of all of your other reviewers, though I read this book in graduate school and didn't have trouble staying awake. I think R. Albin of Michigan comes closest to the gist of Wood's central thesis, but I would like to elaborate. The Founding Fathers were steeped in 18th century hierarchical society and resented the inherited privilege of Europe's aristocracy because they believed themselves to be the equal of the gentlemen who ruled England. A hallmark of such a society was a requirement that the elite assume the reins of government and exercise power for the benefit of everyone in society. They were required to act "Virtuously" in 18th century parlance. They did not really intend to change this hierarchy with the Revolution and they fully expected that the common men they mobilized as their ground forces would govern the country virtuously. The common man certainly being capable of governing his own affairs, Adams, Madison and the others found that the rustics who controlled the state legislatures during the Revolution and after had no inclination to govern for the larger society. They pursued their own interests and gave little thought to the greater issues at hand, such as the need for organizing a national government and integrating the economy. Because of that sour experience with "direct" democracy, the Founders created a constitution, based on what they saw as the structure of "checks and balances" implicit in the English constitution, that they hoped would restrain the common man and his lack of virtue. Wood's book is the history of their transition through, and adaptation of, highly sophisticated political theories to arrive at that result. Because of their superior understanding of politics and how to control the forces they unleashed, the US passed through its revolutionary era without the full-blown civil war that plagued both the French and Russian Revolutions.
