About the Author
Chris Wraight is the author of the Horus Heresy novel Scars, the novella Brotherhood of the Storm and the audio drama The Sigillite. For Warhammer 40,000 he has written the Space Wolves novels Blood of Asaheim and Stormcaller, and the short story collection Wolves of Fenris, as well as the Space Marine Battles novels Wrath of Iron and Battle of the Fang. Additionally, he has many Warhammer novels to his name, including the Time of Legends novel Master of Dragons, which forms part of the War of Vengeance series. Chris lives and works near Bristol, in south-west England.

A solid Black Library novel.

This is probably one of the better books in the End Times series that culminated the saga of the Old World in preparation for the Age of Sigmar Warhammer revamp. In it the forces of Chaos are encroaching upon the Empire's capital of Altdorf and for most of the book following a surprising prologue we follow the Reiksmarshal,Kurt Helborg,as he attempts to muster a defense of the capital. The pace is quite good and the perspective changes around quite a lot from new characters to certain prolific names in the Warhammer world (Which I won't spoil,but provide a great moral conundrum within the story).

As it is a Warhammer novel the action is as visceral as ever. The Prologue is particularly enrapturing before things go south because like the 5th book gave Valten a little time to shine in the prologue this one gave Karl Franz some time in the limelight and Chris Wraight handles his character exceptionally well; You can very much see why he is a man that entire legions would follow into glorious battle to protect the Empire. From there things happen and the book does a solid job never letting up and the climax is bittersweet for any fan of the Empire and it's panoply of heroes. It should be noted that while I read it and thoroughly enjoyed it and the vocabulary is excellent like many of these Black Library novels there are a few blatant typos that do seem a little silly,but they weren't enough to dampen my enjoyment of this book.

All in all it was an excellent read!

Pretty well written and developed story

Pretty well written and developed story. It is pretty depressing story - end of the world type stuff. U will find out what happens to a major character - FRANZ. The ending is intriguing - but little confusing as to what actually happened - when the emperors fate is revealed. Nice to see the bad guys dont have it all their own way. Sort of a no-one wins scenario.

About the Author

Thad B. Welch, Ph.D., P.E., is a Professor and past Chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Boise State University. He previously taught in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at both the U.S. Naval Academy (USNA) and the U.S. Air Force Academy (USAFA). A retired Commander in the U.S. Navy, he was the inaugural 2011 SPEN Fellow. Additionally, he won the 2001 ECE Outstanding Educator Award, the 2002 Raouf Award for Excellence in the Teaching of Engineering, the John A. Curtis Lecture Award from the Computers in Education Division of ASEE in 1998, 2005, and 2010, the 2003 ECE Outstanding Researcher Award at USNA, and the 1997 Clements Outstanding Educator Award at USAFA. Dr. Welch is the former Chair and a founding member of the Technical Committee on Signal Processing Education for the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) Signal Processing Society. He is a senior member of the IEEE and a member of the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE), Tau Beta Pi (the engineering honor society), and Eta Kappa Nu (the electrical engineering honor society).

Cameron H. G. Wright, Ph.D., P.E., is a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Wyoming. He previously taught at the U.S. Air Force Academy (USAFA) in the Department of Electrical Engineering, where he was a Professor and Deputy Department Head. A retired Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Air Force, he won the Brigadier General R. E. Thomas Award for Outstanding Contributions to Cadet Education in 1992 and 1993. In 2005 and 2008, he won the IEEE Student Choice Award for Outstanding Professor of the Year, the Mortar Board "Top Prof" Award at the University of Wyoming in 2005, 2007, and 2015, the Outstanding Teaching Award from the ASEE Rocky Mountain Section in 2007, the John A. Curtis Lecture Award from the Computers in Education Division of ASEE in 1998, 2005, and 2010, the Tau Beta Pi WY-A chapter Undergraduate Teaching Award in 2011, and the University of Wyoming Ellbogen Meritorious Classroom Teaching Award in 2012. Dr. Wright is a founding member of the Technical Committee on Signal Processing Education for the IEEE Signal Processing Society, a senior member of the IEEE, and a member of ASEE, the National Society of Professional Engineers, the Biomedical Engineering Society, SPIE (The International Society of Optical Engineering), Tau Beta Pi, and Eta Kappa Nu.

Michael G. Morrow, M.Eng.E.E., P.E., is a Faculty Associate in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. A retired Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy, he previously taught in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at the U.S. Naval Academy and in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Boise State University. Mr. Morrow won both the 2002 Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Outstanding Educator Award and the 2003 Gerald Holdridge Teaching Excellence Award at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is the founder and president of Educational DSP (eDSP), LLC, a company devoted to the development of affordable DSP solutions for educators and students worldwide. Jodi Magness is the Kenan Distinguished Professor for Teaching Excellence in Early Judaism in the Department of Religious Studies at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. William Dever, eminent American archaeologist, specializing in the history of Israel and the Near East in Biblical times, discussed two main trends in both archaeology and Biblical studies. The first was over-specialization, as archaeology became more theoretically sophisticated, less textually wedded, and more anthropologically oriented. The second development came when Biblical studies entered the historio-graphical crisis in the 1990s, that now sometimes called the 'Minimalist-Maximalist' controversy.

New archaeology moved away from being Biblical to a study of culture, it became interdisciplinary. In addition to radiocarbon dating and electron microscopes, advanced techniques introduced included neutron activation, gas chromatography, and DNA analysis. In the past three decades, archaeologists have made great strides in recovering the lost world of the Old Testament. Dozens of digs in the Levant changed experts' perception of ancient Israel and its neighbors, which is very well demonstrated here, by its author Jodi Magness.

This scholarly book provides an overview of the archaeology and history of ancient Palestine - modern Israel, and Jordan - to the advent of Islam in 640 CE. The archaeology of Jerusalem and the Second Temple, until 70 CE. It provides a historical background for the the ancient Near East world, as well as Palestine. Major sites as Masada, and Petra are explored with archaeology and history, along with cultural material as coins, glass, pottery, and vessels - of each period. I admired especially its plot plans, beautiful maps, and various plates which make the archaeology of the Holy land vivid.

Excellent undergraduate introductory!

I have had the privelege of working with Dr. Magness on two previous excavations in Israel and have tremendous respect for her knowledge and scholarship! That said I was keenly anticipating the publication of this new book as I come to archeology with less of a scholarly approach and more of a "gosh wow!" one. This volume did not disappoint me! Even though it is written for a more general undergraduate audience there is no dumbing down here! It is easy to read but at the same time engaging.

Highly recommended!!

A great historical reference

What I particularly like was the maps of Jerusalem in different historical ages,
and specifically after the revolt against Rome. Maps of the Israel area under
different rulers was also helpful.
The discussion of Masada was right on.
I like the Qumran discussions as well.
There is material here for me for much further study
than a first reading can give. This discussion and information
will be useful to biblical scholars of different religions as well.
