About the Author
SLANGMAN DAVID BURKE
Being brought up in a multi-lingual household, David Burke used his language skills as a tour guide at Universal Studios in Hollywood, California, giving tours in English, French, Italian, and sign language. His love of language inspired him to delve into the intricacies of words and led him to become a prominent author of more than 100 books on understanding slang and idioms in different languages, as well as books that teach kids foreign languages through fairy tales. His materials on slang and idioms are currently used as course curriculum by Berlitz International, UCLA, Harvard University, NYU and Hewlett Packard, and even by the writers of The Simpsons to give Bart his coolness.
Having been trained since the age of four as a classical pianist, David became the in-house music director for the Los Angeles Olympic Organizing Committee where he composed and scored documentaries, commercials, and public service announcements featuring top stars in Hollywood.
In 1986, David founded Slangman Publishing which specializes in materials that teach children foreign languages, as well as products teaching teens and adults slang and idioms in a variety of languages.
In 1999, David became known as Slangman to an audience of over 250 million people in 120 countries due to his regular 6-year segment on Voice of America (VOA), the broadcast network of the United States government.
Currently, David has fused all of his language, musical, and performing talents together to create HEY WORDY!, a children s TV show, which introduces children ages 3+ to the world of foreign languages and cultures in an environment of music, animation, and magic.

Must have for advanced English learners

Bottom line is, Americans do not speak anything like 99% of the available English classes and books. Our speech is saturated with slang, puns, contractions and the like. Most English courses for internationals do not address this and also lack conversation practice. International people therefore feel lost and afraid when put into conversational situations with Americans.
This series closes that gap by miles! I have used it myself in teaching ESL classes and it is incredibly helpful. The material uses fun exercises and pictures to teach American speech. The chapters are also broken down by real-world situations too. There are also special sections on how Americans actually say things in the real world. The process of learning how Americans talk therefore becomes fun and engaging with this series.
I cannot believe that so many English book authors have missed what this book offers.
I would not recommend this series for English "absolute beginners." This is better for advanced English students who already know the "book English," but lack conversation skills with Americans.

Excellent resource to learn REAL American English idioms!

Teaching English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) to adult professionals already living immersed in an English-speaking country can sometimes get tricky. These students are already using the language to their given capacity, much of which is textbook-type grammar stuff. When I found The Slangman Series, it was an answer to prayer because it teaches students how to understand and use idioms/slang. My students were a bit worried when they saw the title; thinking that they would be learning rude or vulgar phrases. Unfortunately, the mayority of textbooks that offer American English idioms/slang focus on Business terms and/or rude or vulgar phrases. FINALLY, with this series, something decent and current that can offer playful, yet very useful, lessons!

This is a very fun book to learn American slang and idioms. It contrasts conversations with slang and without slang so that there is no question about what the idioms or slang means. It also provides many exercises to practice using the slang. The book is organized by themes which most likely would provide the context for the idioms. There is plenty to learn in this book.
