Love, Paul Gambaccini: My Year Under the Yewtree, by Paul Gambaccini

Paul Gambaccini was arrested in the dead of night in October 2013. Possessions confiscated, smeared in the press and rendered unemployable, Gambaccini was forced to pay tens of thousands of pounds in legal fees without an income. For a year he was repeatedly bailed and rebailed, often learning of new developments in his case from the media furore that surrounded him. Finally, inevitably, he was exonerated and added to the ever-growing list of celebrities falsely accused of historical sexual abuse.Love, Paul Gambaccini is the full, unflinching story of the witch-hunt Gambaccini endured during those twelve horrific months as part of Operation Yewtree. Drawing strength from family and friends, he vowed to keep a journal during his ordeal, writing every day until his case was dismissed. The result is not only a searing account of how it felt to have the full weight of the state brought to bear on him; it is also an urgent, rallying call to arms to all those who care about the quest for justice.

Review
"Paul has been my friend for over forty years. He is a brilliant and honest individual who suffered demoralising and unnecessary anguish. This book more than puts the record straight. Read it and get very angry!" Sir Elton John; "An important and ultimately inspiring book that forces us to imagine how we might have responded in the face of such a nightmare." Stephen Fry; "Paul Gambaccini was tested almost beyond endurance by false allegations, and his account exposes the cruelty that is inflicted when the legal system is captured by populist sentiment. His account is a timely reminder that past wrongs are not made right by creating witch hunts." Helena Kennedy QC

A great book about an innocent man surviving the abusive justice system of England 2013.
By Boy Finite
A great book about what it's like to be innocent and on the wrong side of the law in England. Who knew that England had such a backward system of justice? I can understand how this could have been written 200 years ago in Russia, but not today in England! Many a man would have been ruined by the experiences Mr Gambaccini had to endure. Who says gay men aren't brave!

By adrian bernard churchward
The narrative is overlong and the name-dropping is unnecessary, however I am giving it 5* because of its importance to all of us who like to believe that our law enforcement agencies carry out their investigations in a fair (to accuser and accused) and unbiased manner. Nothing could be further from the truth in the case of Paul Gambaccini.

This book is a damning indictment of the way the Metropolitan Police (Met) and the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) conducted themselves in their investigations of Paul Gambaccini in respect of two alleged historical sexual offences.

Several extremely worrying issues about the motives and mind sets of these two institutions stand out:

1. Liz Kershaw of the BBC was asked by the Met if she would like to make an accusation against Dave Lee Travis (also being investigated for alleged historical sex offences).
'No,' she replied. 'Don't you need evidence?'
'No,' she quoted the Met officer as saying. 'We only need people who agree.'
(see page 59 of the hardback version).

2. When Jim Davidson asked one of his interrogating police officers what lay behind the witch-hunt [of celebrities], the officer replied that the police had been ordered to treat all allegations as true "unless proved otherwise". (page 334).

3. The Met phoned Sandi Toksvig and asked her if she would like to complain about anybody. (page 348) Anybody?!

4. When the Met handed the file to the CPS in September 2013, seven to eight weeks before Paul Gambacinni's arrest, the police thought there was only a 3 to 5% possibility of a conviction - (so why hand the file to them?) yet the CPS went ahead with sanctioning the arrest and, without any further (allegedly incriminating) evidence coming to light, the CPS and the Met worked together to "sentence" Paul Gambaccini to a series of periodic rebailings until 10 October 2014 i.e. one year later, when they decided to take no further action, but failed to tell him why.

As a lawyer myself, and also a novelist interested in human rights, I find it difficult to distinguish between the insidious behaviour of the Met and CPS on the one hand and Senator McCarthy's witch-hunters of the 1950s on the other. In both cases, wholly innocent people suffered great psychological trauma, if not physical deterioration, devastating financial losses and the inevitable character assassination from the "no smoke without fire" mob.

As Keith Vaz MP, Chairman of the Home Affairs Committee, said in March 2015, after considering Paul Gambacinni's treatment and that of others:

'A reform of police bail is long overdue. The police only need to have reasonable suspicion that an offence has taken place to arrest someone. It is unacceptable that, even with little evidence, people can be kept on bail for months on end and then suddenly be told that no further action will be taken against them without providing any information as to why. Paul Gambaccini was left in limbo for what he described as "twelve months of trauma", his life was put on hold, his employer [BBC] stopped his contract and his [apparently irrecoverable] costs from lost earnings and legal fees totalled 200,000. The CPS should write and apologise to Mr Gambaccini, explaining why the case took so long when the original police investigation was dropped for insufficient evidence a month before he was even arrested. They must do so in other similar cases.' (pages 413/4).

Sexual abuse, whether current or historical, is a wicked act and it must be investigated without fear or favour. But such investigations must be carried out in accordance with the most basic principles of the rule of law e.g. a person is innocent until proven guilty and should not be held on indeterminable bail while the investigative authorities undertake fishing expeditions.

The conduct of the Met and the CPS detailed in this book leaves a very nasty taste in the mouth and they should be called to account.

By Peter Smith
A friend of mine who knows Paul Gambaccini told me she thought he was a bit crazy because he reacted so passionately to his treatment by the London police. When you read this book you will find out just how justified he was. Read, mark, learn and inwardly digest this very very important narrative.

Evil: A challenge to philosophy and theology, by Paul Ricoeur

Where does evil come from? How is it that we do evil? This book falls into three parts. The fi rst part deals with the magnitude and complexity of the problem of evil from a phenomenological perspective. The second part investigates the levels of speculation on the origin and nature of evil. The third discusses thinking, acting and feeling in connection with evil. The discussion runs in the classic intellectual tradition from Augustine, through Hegel, Leibnitz, Kant, and Nietzsche. But the voice is always that of Paul Ricoeur himself, though he also refers to modern writers like Harold Kushner (When Bad Things Happen to Good People) and John K. Roth (Encountering Evil). Ricoeur considers here man's vulnerability to evil with depth and matchless sensitivity.

Review
“Evil: A History in Modern French Literature and Thought offers a rich study of French thought on evil in its development over almost two centuries. Catani succeeds in the ambitious task of placing in dialogue with one another upwards of forty key thinkers in order to establish a series of significant shifts in understanding evil that will greatly benefit scholars of intellectual history.” ―Scott M. Powers, University of Mary Washington, H-France Review

Born in 1913 he was a professor at Nanterre and Strasbourg. In 2004, he was awarded the second John W. Kluge Prize for Lifetime Achievement in the Human Sciences (shared with Jaroslav Pelikan). What good is wisdom if you can't communicate it?
By Kerry Walters
Over the years, I've been to a boatload of academic conferences and listened to dozens of academic, highly professional papers in philosophy and theology. Too often, the papers are so specialized that only a handful of people in the world could possibly follow them. A not uncommon feeling walking out of a lecture room after hearing one of these papers is "huh?"

Reading (and re-reading, and re-reading yet again) Ricoeur's Evil was like walking out of those lecture rooms--which somehow seems appropriate, since the essay is the text of one of his lectures. Ricoeur at his best is irritatingly obscure. Here, he's maddeningly obtuse. I made the mistake of requiring this book in one of my classes, and none of my students--bright young people all--could figure out what Ricoeur was trying to say. Neither could I, actually.

In broad strokes, Ricoeur wants to claim that the experience of evil, either one's own or another's suffering, can never be demythologized, regardless of how strenuously we try to do so. Discourse about evil historically and psychologically has tended toward reductionism, moving from a mythic account, which simply accepts it as a given in life, to theodicy, which tries to explain it away. But the experience remains irreducible.

Okay. But if this is all Ricoeur is saying, it's neither terribly interesting nor original. What's at stake is why the experience of evil is irreducible, and for the life of me I can't figure out what Ricoeur's answer is. Nor is he clear in discussing the different levels of reductionistic discourse about evil. Especially impenetrable are his discussions of what he calls "the stage of gnosticism and anti-gnostic gnosis" (I don't even know what he intends the second term to mean) and Barth's negative dialectic.

In short, a maddening little book. Its subtitle is "A Challenge to Philosophy and Theology." Too right.

Tell your friends not to waste their time or money.
By Thomas J. Catalano
Bored to tears.

It's a wonder that some people develop a reputation as scholarly and profound. I thing people who give them this reputation are fearful of calling them and their works, "boring."

The book is currently on my pile of old newspapers and magazines which are being thrown away.

Unsettling Synthesis of Silly and Serious
By FredTownWard
It would appear that author Jason Lethcoe could not decide whether to write a silly or a serious Sherlock Holmes pastiche...

so he decided to write both.

Thus, a chock-full-of-silliness pre-prologue entitled "Separating the Facts" segues into a story in which twelve-year-old but old-man-weary Griffin Sharpe, still reeling from the permanent crippling he suffered at the hands of one of the Moriaritys in the first book No Place Like Holmes, which IMHO should be read first unlike what I did here, must suck it up for an even more deadly adventure, in which his parents are threatened, three main characters are killed (though only two permanently in this time scrambling tale), another is injured almost unto death, and another is imprisoned and savagely (though not graphically) tortured as his world gets remade into a living horror by a time traveling Moriarity.

Not exactly a "feel good read" and the author's repeated attempts to lighten the mood with silliness tend to fall pretty flat. And like most time travel stories, the longer you think about it, the more illogical and inexplicable paradoxes will come to mind.

However, if you can get past all that, it turned out to be an enjoyable if not outstanding read.

Note: this is a Christian children's book published by a Christian book publisher so if you have an aversion to Christianity, be ye warned. However, as other reviewers have noted, the Christianity herein is pretty superficial and almost feels like it was added as an afterthought to an already written story. The only part that felt overdone to me was the IMHO overlong discussion over whether a Christian can ever kill, as if the author isn't aware that an accurate, more modern English translation of the commandment in question would be, "You shall not murder," correcting a "misunderstanding" that it seems only we Moderns ever make.

Delightful, but the series title is all too accurate
By enubrius
If you are in the mood for a delightfully deranged adventure story, with charming characters and a wild, but fascinating "time travel" bent, I cannot recommend this latest Griffin Sharpe/Rupert Snodgrass tome too highly.

IF, however, you are of a Sherlockian nature, looking for something, um, Doylish, you'd best look elsewhere. For the series title of
"No place like Holmes" is, alas, no more than truth in advertising.

Indeed, you'd be far better off with Nancy Springer's marvelous Enola Holmes series, or Andrew Lane's better than average Young Sherlock Holmes books.

I have not read the first book in this series, but if the second is akin, the works owe a lot more to a Mr. Herbert George Wells than to Sir Arthur.

Oh, and an aside to author Lescoe; Not that it matters much, but 221A Baker Street would NOT be the apartment next to Holmes' 221B.
It would be, if anything, Mrs. Hudson's flat on the main floor.

Not perfect, but still a fun read
By J.Prather
The Future Door, the second installment in the No Place Like Holmes series was a fun read that is sure to engage young fans of mysteries and science fiction. It's a solid little time travel tale, and if it glosses over a few plot elements, it more than makes up for those shortcomings with its solid sense of time and place, its respectful nod to Mr. Doyle, and a brisk pace which guarantees those pages will keep turning long into the night. It is a surprisingly violent story; offset a bit by the author's careful attention to examining the consequences of those violent actions. Parents be warned that the author is quite adept at creating chilling imagery, and this one might be a bit much for younger readers.

My main concerns with this book lie with the main character, Griffin Sharpe. I love the idea of young Mr. Sharpe, but felt that at no time did he even remotely sound like a twelve year old boy. Sure, I understand his overwhelming intelligence and maturity are part of his character, however I wish the author would have let the twelve year old side of him out a bit more. He seemed like a sad, little old man through much of this story.

I was expecting a Christian theme in this story, however it felt like the author wrote the story, then thought "hmm, I really should add some Christian aspects to this", then went back and plopped a few prayers into what he had already written. I would have hoped that young Mr. Sharpe's Christian beliefs could have been more seamlessly integrated into the story, without the need to so blatantly hit the reader over the head with them at the expense of the narrative flow and the credibility of the character.

This book will certainly find its audience. It is a fun read that will hopefully introduce young readers to a character that they can look forward to enjoying for years to come. Even though it was just okay for me and mine, many young adventure seekers are sure to find much to enjoy in this series

The Girl from Berlin: Gruppenführer's Mistress, by Ellie Midwood

"Gruppenfhrer’s Mistress" is book two in the series “The Girl from Berlin,” which continues to follow Annalise’s story. Caught up in a dangerous game between the Allies and Nazi Germany Secret Service – the RSHA – she’s torn between staying faithful to her husband and yielding to the demands of her American superiors and starting a romance with the unpredictable Chief of the RSHA Ernst Kaltenbrunner, who she finds herself attracted to more and more every day…

Reviewed By Jack Magnus for Readers’ Favorite

The Girl from Berlin: Gruppenfhrer's Mistress is the second book in Ellie Midwood's historical fiction series, The Girl from Berlin. Annalise realizes that she is playing a very dangerous game when she asks for Gruppenfhrer Dr. Kaltenbrunner's assistance in exacting revenge on her boss, Reinhard Heydrich, but she's mad with grief over his complicity in the suicide death of her brother Norbert and the resulting miscarriage of her and her husband's first child. While the leader of the Austrian SS has an evil reputation as a monster and a sadist, Dr. Kaltenbrunner has always been oddly gentle and attentive with her. And while he's initially taken aback at the audacity of her request, he agrees to start the process that will result in Heydrich's death.

Ellie Midwood's World War II historical fiction novel, The Girl from Berlin: Gruppenfhrer's Mistress, is an outstanding and enthralling tale recreating the lives of Annalise and her husband as they work for the American Secret Service in the guise of loyal Germans working in the Reich Main Security Office. The depth of the author's research and her expertise on the subject of Nazi Germany is evidenced on every page of this thrilling and suspenseful tale. I would urge new readers to begin with the first book in the series, Standartenfhrer's Wife, to get the full impact of this most impressive series. Gruppenfhrer's Mistress is impeccably researched and beautifully written, making the workaday world and intrigue surrounding Annalise and Heinrich's lives feel real, and the psychological thriller aspect of Annalise and Ernst Kaltenbrunner's growing attraction to each other is masterfully played out. While the title does let prospective readers know that there is definitely romance, some of which is steamy, in this novel, The Girl from Berlin: Gruppenfhrer's Mistress is historical literary fiction at its finest. It's most highly recommended.

Other books in the series:

Book one: "The Girl from Berlin: Standartenfuhrer's Wife"

Book three: "The Girl from Berlin: War Criminal's Widow"

following Annalise's story as she carefully negotiates her way through love and war
By Frank Scozzari
War, spies, espionage, international intrigue, and romance—‘The Girl from Berlin: Gruppenfhrer's Mistress’' provides everything an avid suspense reader could want. As far as thrillers go, it's up there at the top of my list.

I'm a sucker for WWII stories. I don't know what it is, but that era fascinates me. This is the second Ellie Midwood book I've read staged during this time period and I felt myself drawn in from the first paragraph. It takes up exactly where the first one left off, following Annalise's story as she carefully negotiates her way through love and war.

As an author, Ellie Midwood has that magical ability to create the kind of suspense that causes the reader to turn pages rapidly. Each chapter left me cliffhanging, and as the plot rose to a crescendo, it finally took me, completely off guard, to an unexpected ending.

A Pulse Pounding Page Turning Ride
By MichelleLP
Gruppenfhrer’s Mistress is the continuation of the story of Annalise, a Jewish girl and a spy deep in the offices of the SS. Along with her husband, a highly placed SS officer, she is using her job to get information to the allies while doing everything in her power to redirect as many captive Jews and POWs away from the death camps. It is a precarious road she walks. Threat of discovery stalks her every move. Old enemies, and new ones, make it that much harder for her. She has found an unexpected and sometimes unwitting ally, her boss, chief of the RSHA. All he wants is to make her his.

To say this book is well written is an understatement. The characters are so complex and driven that they fit into the tapestry of the real life historical figures dotted throughout the story as their equals. I absolutely love how the author has made the Nazis human. Nazi Party war crimes are so heinous that it is so easy to sit back and judge it as a whole, making it easy to forget it was made up of individuals. Those who were just following orders and lived with it any way they could because they couldn’t see a way to protect what they loved by doing anything else. Those who found a way to work within the system to bring it to an end, yet still had to make hard decisions for the greater good that would scar their souls forever. Then there are the true monsters, who would have unleashed their evil on the world anyway and just lucked out to find a vehicle like the German war machine to amplify what they alone could have accomplished. It is a rich tapestry to set an unconventional love story against and Ellie Midwood has met the challenge admirably.

I thought the first book was good, This second installment in the series was a pulse pounding, page turning ride. This book reminds me why I have a rule against reading series books before I have all of the parts, because I get to the last page and...!
I am breathlessly awaiting the next book.

I gratefully accepted a copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review

Excellent Historical Fiction With a Slice of Intrigue
By John P. Goetz
The Gruppenfhrer’s Mistress is second installment of Ellie Midwood’s The Girl from Berlin series. What’s even better is that while looking at Ellie’s author page on Amazon, I was happy to see that there’s a third installment already available!! The Gruppenfhrer’s Mistress is the continuation of the story of Annalise Friedmann and her fight to avenge the murder of her brother and her battle to save as many Jews and POWs away from the German concentration camps.

I read the first installment, Standartenfuhrer's Wife and one of the things I commented on was Ellie’s characters. I appreciate it when I can become emotionally involved with a novel’s family of personalities. Gruppenfhrer’s Mistress provided me the same emotional involvement. Some of the same characters are in this second installment along with some new friends and adversaries. Ellie takes a very dark period of mankind, World War II, Nazis, and the horrors of the Holocaust, and expertly creates a portrait where the reader sees both the human and evil sides of individuals.

I’m not going to give anything away, but when I reached the ending of the book I was taken completely by surprise. If you like historical fiction that is entwined with action and intrigue, you cannot go wrong by reading Ellie’s The Girl from Berlin: The Gruppenfhrer’s Mistress.

And now for Installment #3…

Potentially a good book, in the right hands
By Matthew M Norris
The activities in this book are varied and serve to reinforce and improve basic French skills, I would not recommend this book unless you had some prior knowledge of French, any will do really. It also has grammar sections in each chapter and has nice vocabulary and culture sections. However, there are areas that aren't fully explained and if your teacher/professor is a French native then they should quickly be able to point out the books cultural mistakes and explain the little details (but very important) that the book leaves out. A willing student and a good teacher can really make this book work.

Paints a Too-Rosy Picture of All the Colleges, But Informative Nonetheless.
By Brian R. McElroy
I'm a Harvard Grad (class of '02), professional test-prep tutor and college consultant based in San Diego, and I give this book my qualified recommendation.

I've been using the Fiske guide to Colleges with my students for over 10 years now. Although it's not my favorite college guide (that honor goes to Princeton Review's College Guide The Best 380 Colleges, 2016 Edition (College Admissions Guides)), the Fiske guide is still helpful and worth checking out for its unique perspectives.

However, be forewarned that the Fiske guide is not exactly an unbiased, realistic source of information. If you're looking for honest criticism of colleges as well as glowing praise, then don't bother looking here--it makes every college look great. Yes, student interviews are included, but they are overwhelmingly positive--it's almost as if these entries are extensions of the admissions department from each school. The most negative kind of comments you can find are those such as "classes are demanding" and "this school is for people who want to make a lot of money after college."

If you're like me, then as a college-bound student (or the parent of one) you don't just want to read the good news about your prospective schools, but the bad news too. If the dining hall food is lousy, the dorms are dreadful, or the town is not college-friendly, then this is something we deserve to know, rather than have glossed over in a sea of overblown praise. Look elsewhere for this type of critical information.

Here are the statistics provided by the Fiske guide:

Website, Location, Public/Private, Total Enrollment, Undergraduates, % Male/Female, SAT Ranges, ACT Ranges, % Financial Aid, % Pell Grant, Expense (they use categories, but why not just provide an exact full tuition cost?), % Student Loans, Average Debt (again categorized instead of a dollar amount), Phi Betta Kappa (Yes/No), # Applicants, % Accepted, % Enrolled, % Grad in 6 Years, % Returning Freshmen, Academics (rating), Social (rating), Quality of Life (rating), Admissions Phone #, Email Address, List of Strong Programs, Application Requirements.

I wish you the best of luck with your college search!

Helpful for info, great supplement to "The Enlightened College Applicant"
By Steve Glavine
It's a simple, easy to use "phone book" style college guide with a brief write up on each school mixed in with a few statistics about each institution. I think this book is a great supplement to "The Enlightened College Applicant: A New Approach to the Search and Admissions Process." We're using both books to help my daughter navigate the college search and I'm happy with how everything is going so far. I really like how this book gives you the basics on each college.

Review
"In many ways, the history of American Education is the history of a quest for equality. With this must-read book, Dr. Staehr Fenner empowers educators to continue this quest on behalf of students who have too often been relegated to the basement of school buildings, literally and figuratively. She lends a human face to the experience of English Learners and encourages us to think in terms of what attributes ELs bring to their learning experience and how others can benefit from their presence in the classroom. This book is a promising, uplifting, and much-needed call for action!" (Rosa Aronson, Executive Director 2013-04-09)

"This book is a major contribution to the field in that it offers concrete actions administrators, teachers and parents can take to ensure best practices in schools for ELs. Diane Staehr Fenner demonstrates her extensive school-based experience by providing a highly practical handbook filled with useful models, tools, and professional development activities, all of which are well grounded in an assets-based and shared responsibility theoretical framework. This volume will meaningfully advance program quality, assessment and instructional practices, and family engagement through well-formulated advocacy initiatives as demanded by current EL teacher education standards. A welcome addition to all who care about the education of ELs PreK-12 and beyond!" (Nancy Cloud, Director, M.Ed. in TESL Program 2013-04-15)

"This book makes a very important contribution to the field by highlighting the importance of advocacy and, through its numerous examples of advocacy in action, showing howto achieve equitable and excellent education for ELs." (Diane August, Principal 2013-04-22)

"Staehr Fenner delves into the many facets of school-centered advocacy that promote the educational advancement of English language learners. Her thorough treatment of the roles of many stakeholders—including teachers, school leaders, district administrators, and family members—in viewing linguistic and cultural diversity from a strength-based perspective is motivation to read this valuable resource."

(Margo Gottlieb, Director 2013-04-15)

"Diane Staehr Fenner coaches her readers on how to develop a much needed, decisive voice of advocacy. She makes a most compelling case for educators to share the responsibility for teaching English learners within and outside the school. A must read for all teachers, administrators, teacher educators, and policy makers!" (Andrea Honigsfeld, Professor 2013-05-06)

“This book will equip educators with the research and the courage needed to make sure their EL students succeed. A true treasure trove of answers—whether the reader is a veteran educator of ELs, or someone who is new to the profession and the field, this book will improve practice, no doubt about it!” (Giselle Lundy-Ponce, Associate Director 2013-05-01)

"Just when you thought no one couldhear youabove the din of everyday life as an educator, Diane Staehr Fenner has written a book that demonstrates a broad understanding of the challenges we face. Advocating for English Learners is a great opportunity to engage colleagues in the reflective and collaborative discussions critical to needs assessment and proactive program development to address the needs of some of our most vulnerable citizens and newly arrived immigrant students. This book should be part of every pre-service and in-serivce program for teachers and administrators who serve English learners. The challenge is not what we can do for our students. Our challenge is to create learning environments that recognize and energize the potential of each child and each family to contribute to our communities."
(Anne Marie Foerster Luu, TESOL, International Teacher of the Year, 2013 2013-05-31)

"This is a state-of-the-art, practical, comprehensive resource that will be extremely useful and valuable to practitioners as they advocate to make a positive difference in the lives of English learners and their families." (Teddi Predaris, Director, Office of Language Acquisition and Title I 2013-05-01)

"Diane Staehr Fenner’s practical tips on how to effectively advocate for ELLs will be a valuable resource for schools nationwide. Highly recommended for professional development discussions, district-level planning teams, and pre-service settings." (Lydia Breiseth, Manager 2013-05-01)

"There are a plethora of books that tell teachers and instructional leaders how to best teach ELLs, but the field is in dire need of Advocating for English Learners. Finally, a book that tells us what we need to know before we can get to the work of actual instruction. This book provideseducators with a firm understanding of the social and emotional supports that we must provide in order for our ELLs to maximize their academic potential. Advocating for English Learners goes beyond the classroom--linking our students' realities to the school. It shows us how to use our sphere of influence to provide what might be the missing ingredients for helping our ELLs to learn. This book is a must read for any teacher or administrator who is interested in improving his or her practice and changing the culture of the school to one that embraces all learners." (Esta Montano, Director, English Language Education Special Programs 2013-04-09)

"Diane Staehr Fenner brilliantly outlines English language learner advocacy issues we all need to incorporate into our daily practice as educators to deliver a just and equitable educational experience for all ELL students and their families –one of the most important books for educators and advocates in education to be written." (Lus-Gustavo Martnez, Lecturer I of Applied Linguistics 2013-05-01)

"It iscommon knowledge that English language learners (ELLs) are the fastest growing population in our schools. Most teachers are likely to have one or more ELLs in their classrooms, and yet thereis still so much misunderstanding and confusion about what a quality equitable education represents for ELL students. Staehr Fenner’s work sheds light on what is different about ELL students. She highlights theimportance of Advocacy and Collaboration in order to develop and implement a well-rounded education program for ELLs. And she does so with a refreshing perspective, using clear, real-life examples and providing guidance about how to implement those promising practices and tackle challenges along the way. Staehr Fenner’s work will no doubt dispel the myths and encourage positive changes for ELLs in our schools." (David G. Nieto, Division Administrator 2013-04-25)

"It’s evident from the first pages that Diane Staehr Fenner knows what it’s like to be in a classroom, hallway, or meeting where English language learners and their needs are being overlooked or marginalized. In this essential new book, she gives teachers the framework and the tools we need to advocate effectively and ensure our studentsthe seat at the table they so deserve. I would recommend this book to anyone who educates ELLs, and since today that is nearly everyone in education, it could not be more timely. These beautiful, multi-talented children are the future. Thank you, Diane, for helping to make our voices stronger on their behalf." (Barbara Page, ESL Teacher 2013-05-01)

"Wow! This is the first book I have encountered which is devoted solely to the area of advocacy for English language learners (ELLs). In education, where the effects of political and judicial decisions are apparent, this is a very much needed book in guiding future educators and inservice teachers to be strong catalysts in advocating effectively for the academic success of ELLs." (Arlene Costello, 2007 Christa McAuliffe Educator/ Teacher on Special Assignment 2013-04-24)

"In this timely and utterly necessary book, Staehr Fenner explains why all educators need to advocate for English language learners, based in solid yet accessible research, and how to do so with the supporting resources and activities provided. She guides readers in understanding and implementing "scaffolded advocacy," including effective instruction for ELLs. Margins notes included throughout will allow teacher educators to easily use this as a training manual for pre-service and in-service teachers working with ELLs. Finally, the personal anecdotes, stories, and vignettes from the field leave the reader with the crucial message of the book: everyone can and should be an advocate." (Heather A. Linville, TESOL Instructor/ELL Advocate 2013-05-01)

"With Advocating for English Learners: A Guide for Educators, Diane Staehr Fenner closes a gap in teacher education publications. This much-needed book addresses immigrant realities, teacher experiences, administrator preparation, and Title III policies by using advocacy as the organizing principle. Based on solid professional foundations and with great insight and skill, Dr. Staehr Fenner provides all stakeholders with tools for a collaboration that works so that linguistically and culturally diverse student population needs can be sufficiently addressed in K-12 contexts and beyond." (Christel Broady, Director 2013-06-11)

“This book provides a much-needed resource for teachers of English language learners (ELLs). Dr. Staehr Fenner shows the importance of advocating for ELLs and preparing teachers to do this work. There is no other book that provides such an emphasis. The personal anecdotes and examples will help teachers connect with issues of advocacy in teacher education programs. This book shows that teachers and administrators can be change agents through their advocacy work for ELLs.” (Dr. Luciana C. de Oliveira, Associate Professor)

Kudos! Aplauso! Way to GO!!
By Debbie
In "Advocating for English Learners", Diane Staehr Fenner has opened new avenues of pedagogical thought about English Learners. By taking principles and processes of advocacy out of the (more familiar) political context, and applying them to the individual educator's classroom, the author has given all teachers the tools to advocate, accommodate, and better educate our growing language learner population.
This text is timely without being faddish, profound without being stodgy, and empathetic without being melodramatic.

A good read, a great study, and a fantastic professional development tool!

Our field is desperate for more than best practices in instruction
By K. L. Keith
Advocating for English Learners is an essential handbook for effective instruction while reducing the gap in achievement between English Learners and their English proficient peers. Our field is desperate for more than best practices in instruction, but best practices in advocacy which must go hand in hand with effective instruction. This books serves as a handbook for handling each and every challenge presented in education today surrounding English Learners while focusing on the tremendous JOY of teaching this inspiring and resilient group of learners. As the director of an English Learner program, I purchased a copy for each of the twenty schools with which I work. It will undoubtedly provide a 2014 research base for the ongoing issues that demand our immediate attention.
