About the Author
Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz is a teacher, philosopher and spiritual mentor who has been hailed by Time Magazine as a once-in-a-millennium scholar. Born in Jerusalem in 1937, Rabbi Steinsaltz studied physics and chemistry at the Hebrew University. At the age of 24, he became Israel's youngest school principal. He established a network of schools in Israel and the former Soviet Union, and in 1988, was awarded the Israel Prize--his country's highest honor--for his work in Jewish education. In 1965, Rabbi Steinsaltz embarked on a lifelong mission to make the Talmud accessible to all. He has since translated and developed commentaries on the Talmud in modern Hebrew, English, Russian and French, revolutionizing the study of this central text of Jewish law, ethics, customs and history. In addition, Rabbi Steinsaltz has authored some 60 books and hundreds of articles on subjects ranging from theology to mysticism and social commentary.

About the Author
Ehizogie Iyeomoan, born in Sapele, Delta State, Nigeria is a recently discovered golden seed of the Arts, from the African continent. Ehizogie hails from Ewu and Ekpoma respectively, in Edo State of Nigeria. He attended King's College, Lagos (08' set) and was a onetime President of the King's College Old Boys Association (KCOBA), University of Benin (UNIBEN) Chapter, Edo State of Nigeria (in 2014). The graduate of Economics and Statistics of the University of Benin, Nigeria, is a poet, essayist, editor, motivational speaker, monochrome pencil artist, flutist and a tutor. The multi-talented and multi-award winning poet and writer who has won laurels in essays and poetry in Nigeria and across her borders, believes all men were born black. Ehizogie’s poem, “We are Afrikans” won the silver prize for poetry in the Korea-Nigeria Poetry Festival, in 2014; “Fulani Boy” was also enlisted for the Castello Di Duino prize, in Italy (March 2015) and the masterpiece won the 1st Prize in the Korea-Nigeria Poetry Festival, also in March 2015; “Tonics of a Madman” was also enlisted for a prize in the Tokunbo Fernandez International Poetry Competition, set in the UK (March 2015); to mention but a few. Three poems of his - Colourless things, Tonics of a madman and Wet Dreams, have been reviewed by Kalahari Reviews- Africa's biggest literary reviewers. His works have graced the pages of some transnational and international anthologies, literary magazines and e-zines; literary websites, chapbooks and local Newspapers. A lovely book of poems rich with intelligent humor, societal observations

A lovely book of poems rich with intelligent humor, societal observations, and amazing lyricism. These poems are an unapologetic celebration of Nigerian (and wider African) heritage, including "Fulani Boy" (which has garnered international recognition), and the exquisitely-written "Kwesi." My feet wanted to dance to the intense rhythms of "Call of the Konga," "Nkpokiti dancer," and "These ghosts shall dance again" -- these three poems, which appear together in FLAMES OF THE FOREST, capture the rhythm of drum, flute, and tambourine in a most magical way, conveying foot-stamping rhythm and sensuous movement in a way that I didn't think possible via mere words on a page. And the social commentary in "Meet me at Chibok," "To a suicide bomber in Mubi," "Haven't we seen enough?" and "When will the ravens perch again?" is not merely a lament, but holds a deep sense of determination to move toward something better. My personal favorites in this fine collection are "Fulani Woman" and "Hills of the Impala" -- these poems, in my mind, deserve every bit the same international attention received by "Fulani Boy" -- they are both astoundingly well done, poems I have read again and again and again that make my heart smile and break at the same time. I am looking forward to another collection from this promising young poet.

A Few Words…

I will be quick to trouble you with this little confession: I’m yet to meet ‘Zogie Iyeomoan in person, though by way of self-introduction, he describes himself in this elegant collection of poems as “an unrepentant lover of African literature and history”. He also makes quite a few poetic “confessions” and “claims”, but more on these shortly.

I have no reason to doubt his claim to being “an unrepentant lover of African literature”, having before now encountered his poetry on social media and seen the passion with which he goes on creating, on a near daily basis, poem after poem that can conceivably be described as of high quality.

If I have been struck by the kinetic energy that suffuses his ‘social media’ poems, the dexterity with which he unreels the tapestry of his poetic imagination, I have also not failed to wish that these poems and his many others lying in quietude in memory cards and flash drives are “transmogrified” into some “permanence” in the nature of a book. Now in this homogenous form, it could either be transmitted into other forms - electronic/digital, etc. – or left as it is.

If I have been taken in by the sensitivity with which he articulates his perspectives and the depth of his love for words, I have also been impressed by his relishing of a broad-based collocational geography in amplifying and contextualizing his messages. All these, put together, have given his poetry an unforgetability – a certain kind of haunting presence – which at last this volume not only validates but consolidates – to my great joy, and relief!

Flames of the Forest, then, is an effort that reveals the flaming innards of a young Nigerian writer’s passion for the beaded word and a more than passionate affirmation of his love for literature, especially the poetry genre. It showcases his joy, pain, surprise, disappointment, frustration with his country, his continent, its past, present and future. It is a roller-coaster of emotions and that this intense presence is urged on by the solidity of the panoramic sweep of the 76 poems is remarkable indeed.

In one of the poems, Yeomoan declares: “I’m not a renowned poet/just an apprentice”. Going further, he states: “If I be a poet/let my words give life”. Much as these “confessional”, profoundly self-effacing lines may suggest that in his youth and innocence the poet may not even be sure of who he is, a close reading of this collection reveals that it is certainly not a journey of innocence. It is, in fact, the foraging of a vibrant, multi-talented writer in the panoply of experience seeking to forge a defiant, personal poetic mode; the relentless, undefeated and undefeating effort to create forest fires.

Flames of the Forest, in my estimation, is a powerful collection that demands the attention of all who seek not only beauty in poetry, but also the poetry of beauty. But beyond this, is the undiluted truth it unleashes, damning the consequences.

First-rate first Confucius

This was the first translation of the Analects that I read. It has faults, but so too does every other translation, and there is no translation that reads more delightfully than this one does; Dawson may be the only really elegant writer of prose to have undertaken an Analects translation. Dawson's besetting sin is a flood of conjunctions and transitions which have no root in the original. Take the following for example:

"The wise delight in water, but the humane delight in mountains. For although the wise are active, the humane are at rest. And although the wise will find joy, the humane will have long life." Here the words "but" "for although" and "and although" are purely Dawson's creation: there is nothing correspoinding to them in the original.

But if this is the worst sin a translator has, we may breathe freely. Lau similarly--in fact to a far worse degree-overlards his translations with verbiage, and he cannot plead the excuse of elegance. Let's compare them. Here is Lau:

"A man is worthy of being a teacher who gets to know what is new by keeping fresh in his mind what he is already familiar with." 27

Would anyone reading that sentence remember it as something inspiring or exciting? And why can Lau not refrain from all the useless padding?

Here is Leys:

"He who by revising the old gets to know the new is fit to be a teacher." 17

A bit better--we don't quite fall alseep here at least--but "revise" is cold and, as we shall see, a strange choice.

And now Dawson:

"If by keeping the old warm one can provide understanding of the new, one is fit to be a teacher." 20

Is there a comparison? I can remember how exciting I found those words the first time I read them! The original has a concision of which English is incapable: "Warm old and know new, can be teacher indeed" would be a word-for-word attempt. Ten words--to Leys' 17, Dawson's 20, and Lau's (typically egregious) 27. "Know new" could mean either the man himself knowing the new, or providing such knowledge to others, or both; classical Chinese admits of these ambiguities, and it gets to the point where ambiguity becomes greater precision, as the knowledge here can be conceived of as communal and indivisible. Dawson has taken a few liberties; we could probably not justify "provide understanding" from a strict analysis of the original, although even here a defence could be mounted, for the Chinese word "knowledge" or "know" includes the sense of wisdom as well. But "keep warm" keeps the "warm" in the sentence, which neither Lau nor Leys seems interested in. Yet it is important! The soul of the Analects is alive in this translation as it is not in the others.

This book is not equipped with much in the way of scholarly or philological notes, but there are enough notes to clear up the obvious problems. I would strongly recommend this as a first Analects; it's better simply to enjoy and mull over the words themselves without getting caught up in the web of secondary concerns that heavily annotated books tend to drift into. The only really good translation is five or six translations read side by side, for comparison, along with the original, but starting with this one would be the most enjoyable way to get into the world of Confucius.

Before purchasing this book, one needs to ask themselves why they want it. If you are purchasing this book to perform a comparitive review on the contextual issues involved with the translation of ancient Chinese for the modern scholar, you will likely be disappointed.

However, if you are simply trying to familiarize yourself with an ancient philosophy of the Far East, this book will do nicely. If you are able to focus on the ideas rather than the grammar, you will be pleased. This book contains a wealth of common sense virtues and would be an absolute "must" for an aspiring political scientist, as it contains a healthy dose of political savvy.

Finally, the reader must keep in mind while reading this that Confucianism did not take hold for many years after Master Kong's death. Such is the way of all wisdom.

Un fedele ritratto della funzione della musica nella societ� italiana

Il libro non � un capolavoro della lingua italiana.
Nonostante ci� credo che sia estremamente funzionale nel descrivere lo squallore che viene ivi raccontato, che attraversa una manciata di decenni di musica italiana vista dalla provincia.

Chiunque abbia mai provato, con poco talento in tasca, a suonare in un gruppo in una realt� provinciale sentir� un profondo sconforto leggendo questo libro, ma con la sottile soddisfazione di non essere il solo ad aver pensato che c'era qualcosa che non andava (e non solo nella propria mancanza di talento).

Marziano ha capito benissimo le dinamiche sociali della provincia e dell'Italia e le propone con cinismo in maniera diretta.
Un libro consigliatissimo a tutti gli amanti della musica e musicisti. Da consigliare anche ai fan di Vasco Rossi, Biagio Antonacci, Ligabue, Negramaro, Emma Marrone (nomen omen) e cos� via, con la condizione che siano in grado di decifrare il testo ed estrapolarne i significati.

I found a lot good information in this book. I want to tell you that it is a very good book about how the English is spoken and not how is it. About the Author
Amy Newman specializes in business communication at the Cornell University School of Hotel Administration. As a senior lecturer, she teaches two required communication courses: a freshman business writing and oral communication class and an upper-level persuasive communication class. Newman also teaches a graduate-level management communication course and an elective, Corporate Communication, which focuses on communication strategy, crisis communication, and social media. Newman served an adjunct instructor at Ithaca College; Milano, The New School for Management and Urban Policy in New York City; and eCornell, where she taught classes online. She has won several awards for excellence in teaching and student advising and grants to develop technology-based learning solutions. Prior to joining Cornell, Newman spent 20 years working for large companies, such as Canon, Reuters, Scholastic, and MCI. Internally, she held senior-level management positions in human resources and leadership development. As an external consultant, she worked to improve communication and employee performance in hospitality, technology, education, publishing, financial services, and entertainment companies. A graduate of Cornell University and Milano, Newman is author of several editions of BUSINESS COMMUNICATION: IN PERSON, IN PRINT, ONLINE. She has developed several multimedia company scenarios to accompany the book, has created an interactive tool for managing speech anxiety, and maintains a blog: BizComInTheNews.com.

Easy to Use

This textbook is very readable and informative. The layout is easy to follow. For example, learning objectives appearing at the beginning of each chapter and are reprinted in margins through chapter as relevant information is presented. The authors included visual aids like charts and photos that highlight key points. There are real world examples and application questions that helped me develop a deeper understanding and recall concepts later. It is also light weight, you won't mind carrying it to class.
