Good information for advanced industrial electrician, or engineer.
By Graeme Mitchell
Generally good technical information. A bit of emphasis on "older style" electromechanical relays used for power system protection, but the principles are universal, and still apply to modern numerical relays. A very good choice for anyone who works "in the field."

I would certainly buy it again.

Relativity Simply Explained (Dover Classics of Science & Mathematics), by Martin Gardner

Since the publication of Einstein's Special Theory of Relativity in 1905, the discovery of such astronomical phenomena as quasars, pulsars, and black holes — all intimately connected to relativity — has provoked a tremendous upsurge of interest in the subject. This volume, a revised version of Martin Gardner's earlier Relativity for the Million, brings this fascinating topic up to date. Witty, perceptive, and easily accessible to the general reader, it is one of the clearest and most entertaining introductions to relativity ever written.
Mr. Gardner offers lucid explanations of not only the special and general theories of relativity, but of the Michelson-Morley experiment, gravity and spacetime, Mach's principle, the twin paradox, models of the universe, and other topics. A new Postscript, examining the latest developments in the field, and specially written for this edition, is also included.
The clarity of the text is especially enhanced by the brilliant graphics of Anthony Ravielli, making this "by far the best layman's account of this difficult subject." — Christian Science Monitor.

About the Author
Martin Gardner was a renowned author who published over 70 books on subjects from science and math to poetry and religion. He also had a lifelong passion for magic tricks and puzzles. Well known for his mathematical games column in Scientific American and his "Trick of the Month" in Physics Teacher magazine, Gardner attracted a loyal following with his intelligence, wit, and imagination.

Martin Gardner: A Remembrance
The worldwide mathematical community was saddened by the death of Martin Gardner on May 22, 2010. Martin was 95 years old when he died, and had written 70 or 80 books during his long lifetime as an author. Martin's first Dover books were published in 1956 and 1957: Mathematics, Magic and Mystery, one of the first popular books on the intellectual excitement of mathematics to reach a wide audience, and Fads and Fallacies in the Name of Science, certainly one of the first popular books to cast a devastatingly skeptical eye on the claims of pseudoscience and the many guises in which the modern world has given rise to it. Both of these pioneering books are still in print with Dover today along with more than a dozen other titles of Martin's books. They run the gamut from his elementary Codes, Ciphers and Secret Writing, which has been enjoyed by generations of younger readers since the 1980s, to the more demanding The New Ambidextrous Universe: Symmetry and Asymmetry from Mirror Reflections to Superstrings, which Dover published in its final revised form in 2005.

To those of us who have been associated with Dover for a long time, however, Martin was more than an author, albeit a remarkably popular and successful one. As a member of the small group of long-time advisors and consultants, which included NYU's Morris Kline in mathematics, Harvard's I. Bernard Cohen in the history of science, and MIT's J. P. Den Hartog in engineering, Martin's advice and editorial suggestions in the formative 1950s helped to define the Dover publishing program and give it the point of view which — despite many changes, new directions, and the consequences of evolution — continues to be operative today.

In the Author's Own Words:
"Politicians, real-estate agents, used-car salesmen, and advertising copy-writers are expected to stretch facts in self-serving directions, but scientists who falsify their results are regarded by their peers as committing an inexcusable crime. Yet the sad fact is that the history of science swarms with cases of outright fakery and instances of scientists who unconsciously distorted their work by seeing it through lenses of passionately held beliefs."

"A surprising proportion of mathematicians are accomplished musicians. Is it because music and mathematics share patterns that are beautiful?" — Martin Gardner

excellent but getting out of date
By Ben Crowell
This is a wonderful, nonmathematical introduction to special and general relativity. Gardner is a talented popularizer, and the two-color illustrations help make this an enjoyable book to read. My only misgiving is that the book is getting out of date on many topics. Ch. 1-6 are fine, but ch. 7, Tests of Relativity, is sorely in need of updating, and ch. 10-12, on cosmology, predate the recent revolution that has made cosmology a high-precision science and revealed that the universe is even stranger than we thought. I would like to see Gardner hand off this book to another writer who can produce a new, up to date edition.

A great book to start with.
By David Roberts
If you are looking for a comprehensive book to understand the nuances of Relativity theory, this isn't for you. However, if you are not mathematically inclined, or don't wish to dive into the math or physics just yet, this is a excellent choice.
This was the first book that I read on the subject of Einstein's theory. I found it entertaining and actually fun to read. I have not read any of Gardner's other books, but his writing style in this one makes for an easy read. It does not feel like you are reading much of a physics books at all.
Furthermore, the illustrations not only are well done, but they make it easier to understand the principles being explained.
If you are looking to know the basics of this theory, this is best book to own. Simple to read, good explanations, uncomplicated. If you are looking for more depth, than you will certainly move on to another book after this, but this is an excellent one to start with.

Best introduction to relativity
By taogoat
I recently read a handful of books on relativity, and I rank them as follows:

Highly recommended introductory works:
* Relativity Simply Explained by Martin Gardner -- best introductory book.
* The Elegant Universe (chapters 2 & 3) by Brian Greene -- extremely lucid, but not as in-depth as Gardner's book -- possibly the best if you want a shorter introduction.
* Einstein by Walter Isaacson, chapter 6 (special relativity) & chapter 9 (general relativity) -- not just a great biography, also a very lucid explanation of Einstein's ideas.
* The Fabric of the Cosmos (chapters 2 & 3) by Brian Greene -- a discussion of general relativity & the nature of spacetime.

Further reading:
* Inside Relativity by Mook & Vargish -- great introduction to Newton, along with great sections on what high-speed objects look like and a great section on how Maxwell's equations of electromagnetism relate to relativity.
* Relativity Visualized by Lewis Carroll Epstein -- a good additional book to read, if you want to delve more into truly understanding how it works. Not recommended as an introduction.
* Relativity: A Very Short Introduction by Russell Stannard -- might be a good introduction, but not as lucid as some of the books above.
* Relativity by Albert Einstein -- not recommended. It's great if you want to see how Einstein explained it, but it is generally not a good introduction. Cumbersome, difficult, and boring.

Relative to the books above, Gardner's book gives the best history of the developments leading up to the theory of relativity. It gives numerous examples of the principle of relativity, which helps the reader ease into thinking in relative terms. It mentions a thought experiment about relativity by Poincare and a short story about relative changes by HG Wells. So it gives you a sense of what was going on prior to Einstein. None of the other books listed did that, or not as effectively.

It provides a history of ether and the efforts to preserve the concept of ether (which leads into the development of the theory of relativity). None of the other books listed did that. I found all of the pre-history to be essential to truly understanding relativity.

It does a great job explaining relativity in a lucid, straightforward manner with numerous examples. I think he explained the equivalence principle, which led to general relativity, better than any of the books above.

A reader could reasonably skip chapters 10-12 (on cosmology), which are out of date and which are likely covered better elsewhere. They still make interesting reading, especially the chapter on the shape of the universe, but they are not essential to understanding relativity.

This book is not perfect, and there are probably concepts that for some readers are better explained in other books. But, relative to the books listed above, I found it to be the best introductory book. Anyone interested in truly understanding relativity will likely want to read several books, in order to view it from multiple frames of reference.

If you'd like larger print and/or hardcover, the first edition of this book is just as good -- Relativity for the Million. My only complaint about Relativity Simply Explained is that the text is a little small.

Enjoy your studies of this fascinating subject!

cheers
:)

Thanks for the View, Mr. Mies: Lafayette Park, DetroitFrom Metropolis Books

Lafayette Park, an affordable middle-class residential area in downtown Detroit, is home to the largest collection of buildings designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe in the world. Today, it is one of Detroit’s most racially integrated and economically stable neighborhoods, although it is surrounded by evidence of a city in financial distress. Through interviews with and essays by residents; reproductions of archival material; and new photographs by Karin Jobst, Vasco Roma, and Corine Vermeulen, and previously unpublished photographs by documentary filmmaker Janine Debanné, Thanks for the View, Mr. Mies examines the way that Lafayette Park residents confront and interact with this unique modernist environment. Lafayette Park has not received the level of international attention that other similar projects by Mies have. This may be due in part to its location in Detroit, a city whose most positive qualities are often overlooked in the media. This book is a reaction against the way that iconic modernist architecture is often represented. Whereas other writers may focus on the design intentions of the architect, authors Aubert, Cavar and Chandani seek to show the organic and idiosyncratic ways that the people who live in Lafayette Park actually use the architecture and how this experience, in turn, affects their everyday lives. While there are many publications about abandoned buildings in Detroit and about the city’s prosperous past, this book is about a remarkable part of the city as it exists today, in the twenty-first century.

“Thanks for the View, Mr. Mies is a superb field guide to the diverse cross-section of inhabitants, the variety of habitats they have constructed within their brilliant biome, the lush and abundant flora and the ground fauna of Lafayette Park. The variety of environments created by each particular species in their words, actions and images is a joy to behold. And like the best field guides, wonderfully instructive.” – Phyllis Lambert, founder, Canadian Centre for Architecture

“This beautiful and wonderfully ambitious book tells the comprehensive story of a unique place – Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s magnificent modernist vision built in the midst of a city undergoing the worst of the urban crisis. The story is told through a collage of archival records, insightful essays and, above all, interviews with the residents and photographs of what they have made of Mies. The collision between Mies’s purer-than-pure modernism and the realities of Detroit is both comic and tragic – surprising, disturbing and, finally, inspiring.” – Robert Fishman, Taubman College of Architecture and Planning, University of Michigan

“Thanks for the View is a surprising paean to human passion and idiosyncrasy, terms not usually associated with the International Style or the architecture of Mies van der Rohe – which in large part is what makes this book all the more welcome. As charming as it is well researched, Thanks for the View celebrates the mutual effect that Mies’s Lafayette Park and its longtime residents have had on each other and, by extension, on the city of Detroit.” – Joe Scanlan, Visual Arts Program, Princeton University

Review
...a fine-grained publication that celebrates Lafayette Park’s residents and daily life there. That book conveys a sense of a complex, diverse ecology: from college students and retirees to herons, pheasants, and possums. (Mariana Mogilevich Public Books)

This inspiring 288-page volume from Metropolis books captures the convivial atmosphere the authors found at Detroit's Lafayette Park, a housing developement designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe that encompasses 32 hectares of towers, townhouses and parks. I visited the area 15 years ago, the book took me right back to its quiet streets, green spaces and distinctive glass and steel design. The three editors (also the book's graphic designers) bring Layfayette to life, primarily through interviews with residents and photographs of them in their apartments. The images provide an intruiging glimpse of how personal style rarely conforms to strict Modernism. (Helena Grdadolnik Azure)

Thanks to a master plan by architect Mies van der Rohe, urban planner Ludwig Hilbersheimer, landscape architect Alfred Caldwell and the spirit of its residents, the neighborhood turned out to be one of the most successful communities in Detroit.
Or, as essayist Marsha Music, who lives in one of the 183 town-houses of Lafayette Park, puts it: "The peace here may be a reward, bequeathed through the ages, for having the commitment and audacity to maintain an integrated community in one of the most segregated cities in the United States. God is certainly in these details, as Mies might say."
It's the prime achievement of "Thanks for the view, Mr. Mies" to show those details in all their significance, and to show them in a very clever and never all too earnest way. See glossy photos of bathroom doorknobs and mail slots, learn more about early community newsletters, whistle with the neighborhood bagpiper.
In two words: Be amazed. (Sebastian Hofer The Detroit News)

In their new book, “Thanks for the View, Mr. Mies,” which is due out at the end of the month (Metropolis Books, $29.95), the editors Danielle Aubert, Lana Cavar and Natasha Chandani, graphic designers all, offer a portrait of Lafayette Park very different from the classic Mies monograph.
Contents include interviews with residents of Lafayette Park’s towers and town houses; archival materials from the complex’s history; an account of nine days spent trying to climate-control a corner apartment; and essays on Mies in Detroit, the Lafayette Park landscape, bird-watching and a record of bird-strike deaths (birds and plate glass don’t mix).
At-home portraits of residents by Corine Vermeulen show Mies’s architecture as a strong frame for personal expression. Some homes look like shrines to 1958, while others reflect the lived-in décor of decades. Jacqueline Neal, an interior designer and 12-year resident of the Pavilion, the smallest of the complex’s three towers, spoke last month about living and accessorizing with Mies. (Alexandra Lange The New York Times, Home Section)

"Thanks for the View, Mr. Mies" explores how Modernist architecture improves lives in the Lafayette Park section of Detroit, which has the world's largest concentration of Mies van der Rohe buildings. (It's also one of the most racially integrated neighborhoods in what might well be America's most segregated city.) (T: The New York Times Style Magazine)

One of my Favorite Books
By Alaina
Personally, I live in the Pavilion (of or Mr. Mies designs) so it was fascinating to read about the history of the Black Bottom/Lafayette Park area. This book is very eclectic in it's style. There are personal essays, letters, and history lessons scattered throughout the book.If you are interested in reading about the rise and fall of Detroit in a different light than the other post-apocalyptic books that people make Detroit out to be, check this book out.

Also, this book is definitely hip. It's also sold in the painfully expensive "Shinola" store in Detroit, so it's totally legit.

Fascinating Book and Creatively Conceived
By tyr
I was barely aware of Mies' work on Lafayette Park and this book was a pure joy to read. Hats off to the authors for a creative way of telling the story; or, rather, letting others tell their stories. I'm glad it wasn't just a book about the architecture, landscape, and site. There's a lot of that here, but the human stories of the occupants are what really sets this apart. More architecture books need that kind of perspective. Well done.

Alliance Politics, Kosovo, and NATO's War: Allied Force or Forced Allies? From Palgrave Macmillan

As NATO’s first hostile offensive military action, Operation Allied Force placed new demands and pressures on the Alliance. Those pressures and demands offer an opportunity to answer critical questions regarding Alliance politics: How much autonomy do the Alliance members have? Does the U.S. dictate Alliance policy? Can the Alliance function politically while engaged in combat? Contributors explore the experience of NATO’s members individually as well as in terms of implications for theories of alliances. More fundamentally, the contributors to this volume ask whether Operation Allied Force reflected a consensus among NATO’s members, or whether some members were “Forced Allies.”

Review
"..a very good contribution to our understanding of the issues."--International Affairs
“Alliance Politics, Kosovo, and NATO’s War: Allied Force or Forced Allies? is a balanced and serious investigation of the circumstances leading up to NATO’s involvement in Kosovo in 1999. It is good at explaining the many complex factors driving policy in NATO’s 19 capitals, both in the run-up to the initiation of hostilities and then throughout the 78 hectic and very much unscripted days of Operation Allied Force. Many books have been written on NATO’s Kosovo operation. This is one of the most comprehensive.” --Jamie Shea, Director of Information and Press, NATO
“Martin and Brawley make Operation Allied Force, NATO’s 1999 air war against Serbia over Kosovo, the lens through which they refract a set of pluralist images of the Alliance. Balanced essays treat nearly every aspect of the relationship between NATO and its member states, and between NATO and other international institutions such as the United Nations or the European Union. Easily the best book thus far on the ‘new NATO.’” --Richard H. Ullman, David K. E. Bruce Professor of International Affairs, Princeton University
“This book offers a very reflective survey of the theoretical and practical issues facing the future of NATO, and indeed the future of military alliances in general. The authors bring to bear the uncertainties of international relations theory in the post–Cold War world, and an expertise on the specific national perspectives of the NATO members, large and small, as illustrated in the war over Kosovo. This is a very timely collection, likely to have a long shelf-life.” --George Quester, Professor of Government and Politics, University of Maryland, College Park

The Greek Wars: The Failure of Persia, by George Cawkwell

The Greek Wars treats the whole course of Persian relations with the Greeks from the coming of Cyrus in the 540s down to Alexander the Great's defeat of Darius III in 331 B.C. . Cawkwell discusses from a Persian perspective major questions such as why Xerxes' invasion of Greece failed, and how important a part the Great King played in Greek affairs in the fourth century. Cawkwell's views are at many points original: in particular, his explanation of how and why the Persian invasion of Greece failed challenges the prevailing orthodoxy, as does his view of the importance of Persia in Greek affairs for the two decades after the King's Peace. Persia, he concludes, was destroyed by Macedonian military might but moral decline had no part in it; the Macedonians who had subjected Greece were too good an army, but their victory was not easy.

A thorough reassessment of traditionally held beliefs about Greek-Persian relations...This work joins the serious works on Achaemenid history that scholars must consult Matthew Walters, Journal of the American Oriental Society For Achaemenid specialists from a classical background, non-Greek material has an exotic allure - and a greater potential for producing genuinely new evidence. Incredible
By Kirialax
This book should be the standard text on the Greco-Persian wars for years to come. Cawkwell has constructed a masterpiece by drawing on ancient sources and modern research with a very critical eye. His research is meticulously cited and approached from many angles, examining everything from logistics to the shape of the hulls of Phoenician warships. It is nothing short of a masterpiece of careful historical research.

Still, I have a couple of caveats. This book is not for the layman. Half of the book is appendices dealing with technical aspects of the war, and probably very boring for someone looking for a scholarly narrative of the period. Also, Cawkwell constructs his ideas over the course of long paragraphs, often with a twist at the end, so it is very important that this book is read with your full attention.

This book is full of solid research and should be the standard work in the field for many years to come. However, it is highly technical and written for other scholars. If you're looking for an advanced piece of work, get this. Otherwise, you're best off looking somewhere else.

First class scholarship, but not for “beginners”
By JPS
This is a rather fascinating book on the Greco-Persian wars and the relations between Greece and the Persian Empire from the mid-sixth century BC right up to and included the conquest of Alexander the Great.

The (relative) originality of the book is to insist on the Persian point of view, showing, as others have also done, to what extent the Greek sources on which historians have somewhat over relied have been misleading. In some cases, as the author shows, this was more or less deliberate and reflected a mixture of propaganda and ideology. In particular, the “Greeks”, that is the handful of cities including two of the largest ones (Athens and Sparta) that fought against Persia did not win because they were “morally superior” and “fighting for freedom”. In some cases also, the Greek sources did not necessarily know very well what they were writing about. In particular, the author shows that Herodotus seems to have known relatively little (to put it in a nicer way than those George Cawkwell) about the Persian Empire.

Regarding the sources, the author quite obviously has his preferences. He thinks little of both Herodotus and Xenophon and does not miss an occasion to demonstrate that the former often did not know what he was writing about and was rather confusing whereas the later was so biased and pro-Spartan that he would become misleading and disingenuous, omitting crucial elements that he must have known about from his narrative. On the other hand, he is full of praise for Thucydides, at least most of the time because he also uncovers and discusses a couple of areas where he also misinterpreted the facts, whether deliberately or not. The author’s points are well argued, including when he demonstrates the limits of each source. However, the way and the tone that he uses make him also somewhat biased, and at times even a bit venomous: I almost got the impression, at times, that he had personal scores to settle with Herodotus or Xenophon!

The author's cases are also well argued and this is a piece of first class scholarship. The annexes are particularly convincing. One of them shows the reliance that the Persian Empire on the Phoenician squadrons. It shows, among other elements, that the Greeks could not match the heavier and better trained Phoenician squadrons that made up the crack units of the Persian fleet and that this explains to a large extent the naval battles of both Artemission (at best a draw for the Greeks) and the Greeks’ refusal to fight anywhere else than at Salamis. A second very valuable insight is to show that the Persian army and Persian general ship, both largely mocked by subsequent Greek authors, were in fact quite formidable. They also show to what extent the Greek victories resulted from making the Persians unable to use their fearsome cavalry (such was the case, the author believes, at Marathon) that the Greeks could not match, and that the battle of Plataea, which the author believes to be the decisive encounter, was a close run thing. He even shows that the invasion of the Persian Empire by Alexander, however successful it turned out to be, was not easy and that both Memnon of Rhodes and Darius III turned out to be worthy adversaries. In particular, and although both ended in glorious victories, the battles of Issus and Gaugamela were more closely fought that it is generally believed.

Another key feature of this book is to the show that even after evacuating Greece and renouncing to conquer it, The Great King and his Empire simply did not enter into decline and were far from finished. In fact, the book shows to what extent the Great Kings were able to play the Greeks against each other, first Sparta against Athens, then Thebes against either Athens or Sparta or even both. Their main aim was to maintain their domination on the Geek coastal cities of Asia Minor and in this they were largely successful. Their main tool in doing so was financing one or the other side to tip the scales in its favour and essentially extract concessions without having to commit their own forces.

One problem with this book, however, is that it is very “scholarly”. By this I mean that it is full of the notes that you can expect in such a work (with the notes clustered at the end of each chapter). Some readers will also find it difficult to read in at least two respects. One is that the author discusses rather systematically and, at times, in intricate detail, each and every issue. Another is that the book is written in such a way that he often assumes that you already have a good grasp of the almost 200 years that are covered, or even that you have a good knowledge of the sources that are discussed. In other words, this is not an introduction, an overview or a starting point for someone who knows little about the Greeks or Persia, despite the quality of the scholarship involved. Four stars.

Excellent work not for the armchair historian
By Philippe Geril
The Greek Wars is an excellent informative book, but and there is a big but, it is not a pleasant read through. It is heavy going, especially the first two chapters are interlaced with so many dates, places and names in such a variety and with such a multitude that you need to have an ancient who's who encyclopedia handy just to follow it all. The book would have improved quite a bit if for example maps were included or timelines for all the rulers named in this work.

The book does really delve into detail on all aspects of warfare related within the Greek-Persian time frame of conflict and politics (including some real gems) so it cannot be faulted on this point, but it is a book for scholars and not for the casual reader.

Therefore my 3 stars.

Introduction to Elementary Particles, by David Griffiths

In the second, revised edition of a well-established textbook, the author strikes a balance between quantitative rigor and intuitive understanding, using a lively, informal style. The first chapter provides a detailed historical introduction to the subject, while subsequent chapters offer a quantitative presentation of the Standard Model. A simplified introduction to the Feynman rules, based on a "toy" model, helps readers learn the calculational techniques without the complications of spin. It is followed by accessible treatments of quantum electrodynamics, the strong and weak interactions, and gauge theories. New chapters address neutrino oscillations and prospects for physics beyond the Standard Model. The book contains a number of worked examples and many end-of-chapter problems. A complete solution manual is available for instructors.

Best Teaching Company Course I Have Taken
By Michael D. Broido
Best Teaching Company course I have taken. Well presented with the right level of detail. Displays the key equations showing their form but does not dwell on the math. Presents the latest results (thru 2016) and covers remaining problems/anomalies and research areas. Explains the irreconcilabilty of quantum mechanics and general relativity. Visual format superior over any audio - only one.

WARNING: 53 errors in this book, STILL UNCORRECTED
By Hastingsdamon
This book contains 53 typos and other errors that you'll need to correct, ranging from minor to debilitating. I cannot fathom why the publisher still has not corrected these in the 6th printing of the 2nd edition (2011), when Griffiths sent them the corrections in 2009. And the brand new, shrink-wrapped copy that I ordered directly from Amazon themselves didn't even include the errata sheet listing the 53 corrections! I had to download this errata sheet myself (Amazon won't let me post the link, but it's a simple Google search.) Bad form, Amazon. And bad form, Wiley-VCH.

With these corrections (that I penciled into my copy before reading), it's an excellent book. All books have corrections like these during the final editing process; it's perfectly normal. What's not normal is that the publisher never applied the corrections.

I knocked off 2 stars for the missing errata sheet, which could cause unaware readers hours of confusion.

marvelous introduction to the subject
By arpard fazakas
Like Griffiths' Introduction to Quantum Mechanics, this book is aimed at the undergraduate with only a limited background in math and physics. All the math and physics required beyond basic freshman calculus and physics is developed in the book in a clear, straightforward way. The book starts with a brief introduction placing the field as a whole in perspective, then follows with a longer overview of the history of the field. Then begins the fun! First the forces and particles are introduced. Then there is a detailed treatment of special relativity and relativistic particle kinematics. Following this there is a chapter on group theory and symmetries in particle physics. Then bound states are discussed, including relativistic corrections to the energy levels of the hydrogen atom, positronium, and charmonium. Then the Feynman approach to quantum field theory is introduced, using a toy theory which simplifies the basic concepts. Following this quantum electrodynamics is discussed, including the Dirac equation, spinors, the Feynman rules, etc. Everything is clearly spelled out so the reader doesn't have to fill in any gaps herself. Techniques for doing calculations are reviewed, followed by some basic important calculations which show how the theory gives results expressed as cross sections and lifetimes. Following this there is a discussion of the electromagnetic and chromodynamic interactions of quarks, electroweak theory, gauge theories, symmetry breaking, the Higgs mechanism, neutrino oscillations, and possible future developments.

This is the book to get if you want to learn this subject on your own with a limited background in physics and math. Nothing important is left out, the explanations are clear, there are numerous problems at the end of each chapter which are very illuminating, the text is carefully proofread and almost error-free. This book will equip you to tackle more advanced books on quantum field theory or the Standard Model of particle physics if you have such an ambition. It will allow you to begin to grasp this field at the level it really lives, i.e., the mathematics, rather than having to rely on verbal descriptions in books for laymen which ultimately raise more questions than they answer.

Fighting for Britain: African Soldiers in the Second World War, by David Killingray, Martin Plaut

During the Second World War over half-a-million African troops served with the British Army as combatants and non-combatants in campaigns in the Horn of Africa, the Middle East, Italy and Burma - the largest single movement of African men overseas since the slave trade. This account, based mainly on oral evidence and soldiers' letters, tells the story of the African experience of the war. It is a 'history from below' that describes how men were recruited for a war about which most knew very little. Army life exposed them to a range of new and startling experiences: new foods and forms of discipline, uniforms, machines and rifles, notions of industrial time, travel overseas, new languages and cultures, numeracy and literacy. What impact did service in the army have on African men and their families? What new skills did soldiers acquire and to what purposes were they put on their return? What was the social impact of overseas travel, and how did the broad umbrella of army welfare services change soldiers' expectations of civilian life? And what role if any did ex-servicemen play in post-war nationalist politics? In this book African soldiers describe in their own words what it was like to undergo army training, to travel on a vast ocean, to experience battle, and their hopes and disappointments on demobilisation.

Review
(An) impressive study. CONTEMPORARY REVIEW An important scholarly contribution, but which, with its sweeping introduction and engaging style, can be read by all for pleasure and profit. BBC HISTORY REVIEWS OF THE CLOTH EDITION Sober and judicious but also thrilling and dramatic. AFRICA Will become the one-stop reference for research on Anglophone Africa and its soldiers during World War II. (...) Killingray succeeds in putting human faces on some of the nearly one million African soldiers who laboured and fought. INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF AFRICAN HISTORICAL STUDIES Will be the standard work on the subject for years, probably decades to come, an entirely fitting pedestal given David Killingray's leadership in this field. INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS Of particular interest is (the author's) challenge to the conventional wisdom that returning soldiers were the vanguard of independence movements. Recommended. CHOICE The most comprehensive work attempted on the subject thus far. (...) This book addresses issues which will not only appeal to African specialists, and military and imperial historians, but should interest many social, political, cultural, transnational and economic historians too. REVIEWS IN HISTORY (A)n impressive synthesis of primary and secondary sources on Africans' contributions to the British Second World War effort. (...) It is replete with first-hand examples and voices from African men and draws upon a formidable range of materials and sources. PAMBAZUKA NEWS A well written book that makes a valuable contribution and should be read by anyone interested in the Second World War, Africa and/or race and military service. JOURNAL OF MILITARY HISTORY A ground-breaking book which reveals as much about the imperial British as it does about their African subjects. NORTH SOUTH David Killingray's fascinating new book sets out in compelling prose and finely researched detail the extraordinary story of Africa's stalwart and generous support of the Empire's most perilous of wars. TLS A must for those undertaking historical research. SOLDIER MAGAZINE
