Every High School has their social outcasts. The band nerds, the math geeks, the chess club, the girl that chews her hair, but at Butler High, even the creepy nose picker in the chess club is more popular than Caleo Anima. No matter what he did, his pale skin, snow white hair, and piercing blue eyes always made him an easy target. He used to think that the only way things could get worse would be if someone found out that he was gay, but that isn't even the tip of the iceberg of problems after a mysterious stranger shows up and changes Caleo's life forever.

Hidden amongst our society, a secret and magical race of people known as 'Leeches', have been engaging in civil war for decades. Both sides are desperately searching for a weapon with unlimited power that will give them the advantage they need to rule their world. This wouldn't mean anything to Caleo, except for one problem...He is that weapon!

Forget making it through High School. Caleo has bigger problems! As the search for him goes on, the world is quickly crumbling around him. He's now fighting for his life and the life of what little family he has left. With the help of new friends, he has little time to try and master his newly found powers as he tries to figure out who he can trust, who is trying to use him, and who just wants him dead. One wrong step and being the awkward pale outcast will be the LEAST of his worries.

We need more books like this one for YA readers!!!!
By Delphina
I absolutely love the premise of this book. A leech is a "vampire", but not at all in the way we think of them. They take peoples energy so that they can use their gifts, which vary from leech to leech. Such a fresh idea for the very popular world of para. I was beyond excited about this book before it even was through edits, so I had very high expectations. I think that was why I found the beginning a bit slow. Once it took off, however..... what a ride. I never knew what was coming next. I really enjoyed so many of the characters in this book. My personal favorite was the Grandmother. She sure is an amazing woman. I am finding that to be a trend of mine; loving the grandmas. I must be getting old ;), I really enjoyed this book and am looking forward to the next book in this series.

I would recommend this book for older teens and adults due to some violent content. There are two references to a case where a character was tortured and they gave me the willies. Also, the main character in this book was heavily bullied at school. There is no sexual content (one almost/maybe kiss), but there is a reference to a nudie magazine.

I was given a copy of this book.

An Action-Packed Read
By Jamie Deacon
At seventeen, Caleo has never had what might be termed a normal life. Orphaned as a baby, he has been brought up by his eccentric grandmother at The Purple Rose bed and breakfast. He doesn't fit in at school, bullied equally for his unusual pale skin and white hair as for being gay. However, when a stranger turns up to inform Caleo that he is part of a supernatural race called leeches, magical beings who steal the energy from those around them in order to fuel their gifts, things get a whole lot more complicated.

Not only is Caleo a leech, he's the most powerful of all leeches, and holds their fate in his hands. Moreover, he finds himself plunged into the midst of what is effectively a civil war, with rival factions battling for rule. Those on both sides are desperate to turn Caleo's ability to their advantage, and will go to any lengths to gain control over him. With cities and towns flattened by rebel bombs, and just as many people wanting to kill as make use of him, Caleo must decide where his loyalties lie whilst fighting to stay alive.

At least he has his family to help him through, Jack most of all. Raised as his foster brother, Jack is the closest Caleo has to a friend. Caleo's love for him is obvious, even if he scarcely allows himself to acknowledge it. Well, he has long since accepted there can be no future for them. Jack is popular, athletic and incredibly handsome, while Caleo is a freak, a social outcast. He has no idea just how much Jack really cares about him, but will Jack have the courage to confess his feelings before it's too late and circumstances tear them apart?

This may be a work of fantasy, but there's a gritty realism about it that appealed to me. Good people die, and those who are left must learn how to survive in a world that has become hostile overnight. I also found the concept of leeches, these creatures that drain the energy from humans merely to increase their strength, a fascinating one. Though there are undoubtedly some editing issues, this in no way spoilt my enjoyment in the story.

If you're a fan of young adult fantasy, prefer novels with plenty of adventure, and are interested in how individuals cope when civilization as they know it collapses around them, you may want to give this book a go.

Intriguing, nerve racking, & completely original!
By Albinomex ~ Jeni's Bookshelf
What a great story! Intriguing, nerve racking, & completely original! YA dystopian paranormal appropriate for any age. I could not put it down. The Leeches, the Blessed, the Humans...they all held my attention & peaked my curiosity. This book does brings up a few sensitive matters including bullying, sexual orientation, & a scene describing abuse someone suffered, all of which were brought up in a tasteful manner & not taken to the extreme. Caleo is a quiet shy teen who has been bullied in school most of his life for his pale skin & white hair. He has no idea how amazing he truly is or the power he holds. The twists repeatedly amazed me as I assumed I had it all figured out...quickly realizing I did not...never even saw some of those things coming. I'm really looking forward to reading Jack!
