Really Either 5 or 1 Star Book, Depending on Your Expectations.
By Craig E. Dupler
If you are looking for a book that describes Tim's view of what IDEO does, then this is a good book and probably deserves a higher rating than I am giving it. But, I doubt that is what most people who do buy the book are hoping to find. I think that most people will be looking for a guide to the application of design thinking in their own business environments. This book is not that. In fact, it is so far from it that I was sorely tempted to give it a one star rating. As a how to book, it is about as big a turn-off as one could imagine. In the early pages he describes what appears to be the hiring process at IDEO, but he makes it sound like this super selectivity is required to identify anyone who will be participating in your own design thinking efforts. Of course, that tone is not helpful at all. What we need is a guide to help the teams we have apply they disciplined tools of design thinking that are oh so tersely described in the IDEO "method card" deck.

So, if you want a book that describes what to expect from IDEO should you happen to hire them to help you with a particular customer enablement challenge, this book is for you and you should think of it as a five star book. It would also rate it highly as a book to give to a superstar employee in whom you are going to invest the bucks to send them to the Stanford d School's "Bootcamp" program. But if you want a guide to the application of design thinking to give to your troops, avoid this book like the plague. I would rate it as something lower than one star for that purpose.

By Thom Olson
I expected more from this book as I was really excited about the subject and the author. After reading it's 260 pages, I can summarize it in two words. It Blows. While the author does know much about intelligent design, he can not write a book that is engaging. He writes like he is giving a TED talk... but it lacks substance, clarity and details. It is nothing more than a pontification of how "great" IDEO is. REALLY? Did you give the book to your employees and ask for feedback? If intelligent design is about understanding the user - then learn to understand the reader, the learner and the person who bought this book. The book drones on like Niagara Falls without coming up with much. Lot's of sizzle. No steak. Don't bother to waste your time unless you are interviewing for a job at IDEO — then you can say you sloshed it. OMG. It's bad. If I could give it no stars I would.

Introduction in Design Thinking by CEO of IDEO
By Bas Vodde
"Change By Design" is an introduction to Design Thinking written by the CEO of IDEO, the famous design firm from which Design Thinking originates. The book is about 250 pages and reads easy and relative quick. Design Thinking spreads techniques used by designers to be used for larger than typical design problems and also teaches these techniques to non-designers. So people in cross-functional teams can focus on usable well-designed and well-solved products.

The book consists of two parts. The first part is an introduction to Design Thinking and the second part describes how it might affect the world. Part One introduces many Design Thinking techniques such as creating empathy, deeply understanding the customer, brainstorming, prototyping, iterating, etc. Each of these techniques is described with stories and examples. Part two starts of with design thinking in organizations but then moves towards the more idealistic space of using design thinking to do good and solve real problems in the world.

Each chapter covers one topic on Design Thinking. Each topic is introduces mostly by stories related to that technique. Most of the stories are directly from IDEO. On one hand, it is nice to read the IDEO stories, on the other hand (as some other reviewers have pointed out), it makes it sometimes almost like a sales pitch of IDEO. It would have been nice to have a other stories also.

The book is a nice and quick read. The stories are interesting and it provides a good introduction to Design Thinking. Four stars and recommended for everyone who wants to learn about IDEO and Design Thinking.
